‘How to escape the workhouse’Use the success criteria below to guide your writing.
Success Criteria – Instructional Writing Me Peer
I accurately punctuated sentences with full stops and used capital letters for all proper nouns (names, places, days, months etc.).My set of instructions includes:
a title and sub-headings, an introduction, a list of ‘things you will need’, step- by-step instructions
I used numbered bullets to make the order clear.
I used: Imperative or ‘bossy’ verbs Modal verbs (must, should, might)
I made good use of adjectives, adverbs and special or technical words to be precise
I used conjunctions or adverbial phrases to join two ideas together (until, although, when you get there/before you begin).
I marked clauses with commas.
I used parenthesis to add extra information.
Please remember, these are suggested activities. You can complete all or some of these tasks and you should work at your own pace. The important thing is that you and your family stay healthy and happy.Also, don’t forget to go onto Read Theory as the teachers are checking up on who is logging on.
1. Why did Jim have to break free before old Marion did her rounds that night?2. Use the word ‘ripple’ in a sentence that is different from the one used in the extract.3. What does it mean when the author says ‘cuffing boys on the backs of their heads as he passed them”?4. Read the paragraph beginning “The air was thick with dust…” and find the simile.5. What impression do you get of the woman in charge of the carpet beaters? Use evidence from the text to support your answer.6. How did the boys know that the man with the cart and the woman are friends?7. How does Jim move as he heads towards the cart? What does this tell you about the way he is feeling?8.
