Stewardship talk of meetingEveryone acknowledged the mo-
torized elephant that sat in the middle of the Midway Community Hall last Thursday when two top officials from Recreation Sites and Trails BC of the Ministry of Forest, Lands and Natural Resource Operations came to talk about the Trans Canada Trail.
They had come to talk about trail stewardship and to offer local residents the chance to help ensure the rail trail corridor in the Boundary is maintained for future generations.
Sandy Elzinga, assistant manager of Community Futures Boundary, wel-comed Tennessee Trent, trails special-ist with Recreation Sites and Trails BC (RSTBC) and John Hawkings, director of RSTBC. Also present was Kevin Eske-lin, regional recreation manager, South-ern Interior East Region – Cranbrook.
Hawkings reviewed the history of the provinces’ ownership of the trails, which includes the Carmi Subdivision of the Kettle Valley Railway that runs from Midway to Naramata, the Columbia and Western (C&W) between Midway and Grand Forks, the KVR Penticton and Osoyoos subdivisions, and the C&W from Grand Forks to Castlegar and the Slocan Subdivision.
Hawking said the Forest Practices Act that now regulates the trails didn’t even exist at the time, and it wasn’t until 2010 that RSTBC was given responsibility for these specific trails.
Today the former rail corridor is rec-ognized in legislation as trails, but ever since the 1990s when the government bought the land, it was essentially vacant Crown land.
“There are some designations on var-
ious portions of it,” Hawking said. But there are lots of portions where
it hasn’t been designated as anything, and that is the case through most of the Boundary.
In the City of Grand Forks the trail is designated non-motorized by a mu-nicipal bylaw. It is also non-motorized through Myra Canyon Provincial Park, legally non-motorized from Naramata up to Penticton and up to Summerland. It is also non-motorized through the town of Princeton.
“The rest of it—while we are not con-doning motorized use, we are indulging it there,” Hawking said. But he repeated RSTBC is willing to work with the com-munities to try and manage it and to re-solve the issue in a way that benefits the most people.
He said RSTBC works with commu-nities who have shown an interest in resolving the issue. He cited work done in Naramata and Summerland. “But if the communities are not interested in resolving this question, there is no re-solve.”
“We are not going to start enforcing until we can go out and work with the groups,” Hawkings said, adding that he would welcome one big group of trail stewards in the Boundary who could come up with a voice to help solve the problem locally.
But trail maintenance and partner-ship with locals was what Hawkings and Trent had come to talk about. The top priority for RSTBC is to maintain the trails to a basic level: preventing wash-outs, maintaining engineering infra-structure and ensuring safety for users.
Hawking said they view the trails as
community trails first, regional trails second, provincial trails third and then they become part of the national trails system.
Trent explained the Rec Sites and Trails Partnership Agreement and the Individual Volunteer Service Agree-ment. With a staff of fewer than 40, the RSTBC relies on some 300 partnership agreements with community groups across B.C. to be the eyes on local sec-tions of trails and rec sites.
RSTBC provides project materials and funding for local projects as its bud-get allows. Volunteers working under an agreement are covered by insurance.
Area E director Vicki Gee said after-wards she is very interested in trying to move this forward as a regional dis-trict initiative. “In the past the regional district hasn’t been too enthusiastic be-cause the government hasn’t been offer-ing a lot of money and they are worried about downloading,” Gee said. “But if that doesn’t fly then I might approach communities about creating a regional non-profit to do this.”
Gee noted the B&B owner from Ida-bel Lake who told the meeting that 600-800 cyclists come through there each year.
“If we don’t put out the effort, we are going to lose the trails,” Trent said. “What we really need are community members to step up and help us with this.”
He said stewardship groups help identify pri-orities and provide a lo-cal vision for the rail trail.
‘If we don’t put out the effort, we are going to lose the trails’
Local teen heads to pageantRock Creek teenager Dakota Turnbull is head-
ing to the Miss BC Pageant at the end of this month.
She told the Times in a phone interview that she had contacted pageant organizers last year after a friend had suggested it. While she was too late to participate then, pageant representatives recently contacted her to see if she’d like to get on board this year.
An application led to a phone interview. “They ask you questions to find out who you are and what your beliefs are and then they choose 300 people to go and compete for Miss BC,” Turnbull explained.
“If I win the regional title I will represent the Rock Creek/Kootenay Area. If I win Miss BC then I will represent all of British Columbia,” she said. Contestants compete for both titles at the same time.
The pageant takes place from Feb. 28 to March 1.
Turnbull acknowledges her major sponsor, Bubbles and Bells Gown Boutique in Kelowna. But going to the Lower Mainland for a weekend, registration and the outfit is all a bit much to handle. So she is seeking support from businesses and individuals in the West Boundary.
Turnbull is a Grade 11 student at BCSS, mem-ber of 4-H and the youth archery club. She also belongs to a Kelowna cheer team that takes part in major competitions.
“My philosophy of life is that anything can happen,” Turnbull said. “Like just go with it. I am
really amazed at the opportunities that I have been given and I think that those opportunities are out there for everyone if you look for them.”

Letters Policy
The truck accident last week proved one thing about the local traffic scene. We may not be big enough to have traffic jams like Kelowna does but we’re still big enough that a poorly timed accident can impact the morning commute for a lot of people.
School kids were on their busses and their teachers were in their cars all heading to what they thought would be a normal day. But with some of them going east and a bunch of the others heading west, when there was a truck jackknifed across the highway at quarter to eight in the morning, quite a few people found themselves in a pickle.
Fortunately cell phones and text messag-ing exist these days so staff was reassigned and all of the classrooms were covered so the kids could be looked after at whatever school they could get to.
Also fortunate was a previously scheduled el-ementary school skate at the Midway arena later in the morning. So eventually the kids were all meeting up and could be sorted out there.
Lots of people move out here to the country to get away from traffic. Can’t say as I blame them. Though a few years back when I was in Vancouver for a weekend I saw a traffic jam on a major arterial heading to the Oak Street Bridge. In a foolhardy quest for nostalgia or something, I flipped my blinker on and pulled onto the ramp that would put my car into the slow-moving traffic. I think that goes un-der the “You can tell they’re country if…..” column.
Sometimes I tell people that we live rural out here. “So rural in fact we had to cancel the traffic jam last Thursday because Judy had her truck in the shop,” I say.
Too much time behind the wheel can get boring though. That was the case for this fellow from Newfoundland and Labrador named Archie.
Now Archie was a long-haul truck driver, so he spent a lot of time behind the wheel. He had a regular route that went from St. John’s to Montreal. He’d been making this same run for years and he was getting really, really bored with it.
So one day he decided to take up knit-ting to help him pass the time. He’d just wind his arms through the spokes of the steering wheel and go merrily on down the road – knitting and whistling and enjoying his ca-reer as a truck driver again for the first time in many years.
But one day a cop saw what he was do-ing. And this cop was pretty sure that driving while knitting was a violation of the law. So
he whipped around and turned on his flashing lights. No effect. So the policeman turns on his siren. No effect. So he pulls up alongside the truck and he pulls
out his revolver and shoots out the window on the truck. Still, no effect. So as they drive down the highway, the cop yells up at the driver, “Pullover! Pullover!”
And Archie yells back, “No! It’s a cardigan.”
We live rural out here
We don’t get too many chances out here in rural B.C. to grab the brass ring as it comes by. So we’d be wise to pay attention.
There is hope yet that the Trans Canada Trail and KVR might achieve their full potential here in the Boundary.
The meeting last week in Midway with Rec Sites and Trails BC (RSTBC) offered a lot of clarity about the trail. They admitted that the way the province has gotten into the rail trail game isn’t exactly a shining example of good land management. But they came to offer a partnership program for maintaining the trail.
Here’s a quick trail status update:The trails exist in law. The number one priority for
the folks at the RSTBC is that the trails be maintained to a standard that will ensure their integrity. They can’t do this alone so they rely on community stewards (groups and individuals) along the trail who help them keep on top of things.
The purpose of the meeting was to introduce this partnership agreement program to local residents. Of course other issues were raised.
This corridor of Crown land has remained unoccu-pied for two decades and questions about access and encroachment exist all along the length of the trail.
While those issues are important, they are second-ary to the need for maintenance.
It’s like everyone agrees they like the elephant that sits in the centre of the room. They often have different reasons for liking the elephant, and sometimes they argue.
But one thing must be made clear—if nothing is done to feed and clean up after this elephant then it isn’t going to be here forever to argue about.
There’s hope the trail will achieve
its potential

Len BairdLen Baird born February 8, 1921, passed away
peacefully on February 6, 2015 at Haven Hill Retire-ment Center, after a short battle with cancer. He is sur-vived by his loving family Gloria Finstad, Shirley and Jerry Haesch, Bill and Sue Baird and Jim Baird. Len has two sisters and a brother, Marie from Tisdale Sas-katchewan, Carrie from Prince George, B.C. and Ray from Red Deer, Alberta. Len has eight grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren and many more extended family. Len was predeceased by his loving wife Hazel on January 1, 1997, three brothers and one sister.
Len was a Veteran and had served in the Canadian Army during WW II for four years. He had landed in France two days after D-Day.
His passions were his fi ddle and horses. Len and Hazel travelled throughout BC racing their ponies, always arriving home with a trophy or prize. He was know to his grandchildren as Grandpa Fiddles and always offered a tune and song. He will be missed dearly by all.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, February 21 at the Fraternal Order of Eagles 4281 at 1:00 pm. The family wishes to thank everyone at Haven Hill for their compassionate care given to our dear Dad.

TGIS asks for land for housingGreenwood council has
been asked by The Green-wood Improvement Soci-ety (TGIS) to donate land to the society for construc-tion of a senior’s housing facility. Ciel Sander spoke on behalf of TGIS.
The previous council had given TGIS a letter indicating the city’s willingness to donate land. In fact, that letter was instrumental in TGIS receiving a grant from the Canada Mortgage and Hous-ing Corporation to conduct a feasibility study for the proposed seniors’ housing complex.
That study is done and the TGIS now plans to form a working group around the project and begin raising money. They want assurance that the property is theirs so they can leverage it to raise funds.
TGIS is asking the city for creekside property running from Midway Street to the elementary school. The property is actually in two pieces separated by a cul de sac; however, the two lots are joined by city property beside Boundary Creek.
The mayor promised them a reply by the end of the month.
***Sander also spoke for the Phoenix Al-
pine Ski Society (PMASS), this time ask-ing for permission to use the ball park on Sept. 26 as a staging area and starting line for a bike road race. She anticipates 50 high calibre riders to come for a ride that would take them up to the Phoenix Cenotaph. The event is being planned as a fundraiser for the PMASS Ski Patrol to help fund courses for youth.
***Councillor Darla Ashton reported
that the last Greenwood Recreation Commission meeting had included a representative from the volunteer group that kept the rink open this winter. She said the volunteers are planning to turn the facility into a year-round venue for events; plans that were talked about in-cluded the possibility of a two-day street hockey tournament in the summer and an outdoor dance. Ashton said the next meeting of the Rec Commission is on March 3 at 6 p.m.
***It was reported that the concession
stand should be ready this week, with all of the equipment installed. An official opening is yet to be announced, but the month of April was mentioned.
***Mayor Ed Smith read a statement
thanking the volunteers who worked at the rink and on the Christmas din-ner. He gave special thanks to John Martin for his do-nation toward the camp-
ground if it were to be moved beside the washrooms near Lion’s Park. Smith also noted Martin’s service to the community and sense of civic pride.
Smith sounded fully in support of relocating the campground. “Our pres-ent campground—across from the sew-er dump and no washrooms and toilet facilities—is unacceptable,” Smith said.
***The city will hold its first meeting to
discuss the budget for the coming year on Friday, Feb. 13 at 3 p.m. in council chambers. There is a second meeting scheduled for Friday, March 6 at 9 a.m.
***Staff was asked by council at an ear-
lier meeting to report on the procedure used for approval of accounts payable at each meeting. Ashton had questioned cheques being approved after they had already been issued. The motion made at each meeting is to approve for payment a list of cheques and auto-debits.
Dalziel’s report stated the current procedure has been in place for years. “Cheques are produced on the basis of sub-mitted source documents that have been approved under the city’s budget or council resolu-tions. Because we are a small municipality the signing au-thority is divided between staff and council. One member of each group is required to sign. To keep council informed, a listing of cheques is issued since the last listing distributed to council at each regular coun-cil meeting.
“This has been the proce-dure for over 18 years based on council motions since 1997. This procedure has never re-sulted in a qualified audit opin-ion for the City of Greenwood. The requirement not to release cheques until approved by the entire council has never been
the policy within the City of Greenwood.”During question period, Jim Nathorst
agreed with Ashton that voting to pay bills that had already been paid seemed redundant. “A motion to approve pay-ment doesn’t work if they have been ap-proved,” Nathorst said.
He said the list of cheques is good in-formation that the public should see but suggested that the motion should be to receive the report rather than to approve payment.
***The administrator and Fire Chief Roy
Terashita will attend a weekend-long Fire Service Administration Educa-tional Program in Nelson in April. The workshop is entitled Working Together: Effective Fire Service Administration for Fire Chiefs and Local Government Chief Administrative Officers.
The program is aimed at communi-ties operating predominately volunteer and smaller paid on call/composite fire departments. It will support CAOs and fire chiefs to carry out their responsi-bilities in providing fire services to their community.

ing a transport truck jack-knifed, blocking Hwy 3 just before eight a.m. Midway RCMP reports that the ac-cident happened about five kilometres west of Midway.
The fire department was called out to tend to the spilled diesel fuel and oil from the semi.
Corporal Judson Mayes told the Times in an email that the semi was heading east on Hwy 3 when it hit ice, crossed into the westbound lane and jackknifed into the ditch off road. Mayes said the driver com-plained of back pain and was taken by ambulance to Boundary Hospital to get checked out.
The accident was blocking both lanes of traffic. Local school busses were delayed, as was regular traffic for a period of time.
***On Friday, Feb. 6, Midway
RCMP responded to a break and enter that took place up Christian Valley Road some-time between Jan. 31 and Feb. 6.
Mayes reports the owner returned home and noticed that several items had been taken from his house. Notable items include an antique sewing machine with wooden round case, antique ceramic bowl and picture, Stihl chainsaw, food from the freezer, stereo and speakers, and DVDs, cordless drills and various tools. If anyone has any information regarding this rural residential break and enter, please contact the Midway RCMP with your information. The investigation is still ongoing.
***On Saturday, Feb 7, RCMP responded
to two motor vehicle accidents, one on Christian Valley Road at mile marker 8.5 where a car struck a FortisBC power pole. The female driver was taken to Boundary hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
The second accident took place on Hwy 3 between Midway and Rock Creek involving two vehicles. Police report that weather was not a factor in either collision.
***Also on Saturday, Feb 7, Mid-
way RCMP conducted check stops in and around Midway. In total 15 violations were recorded resulting in roadside warnings and violation charges, a three-day Immediate Roadside Prohibition driving sus-pension and a full impaired driv-ing suspension. Mayes reports that one driver also had outstanding warrants for his arrest from other
jurisdictions.***
“Midway RCMP had zero calls for service during the local men’s and wom-en’s Midway hockey tournament, this past weekend,” Mayes said. “Thanks go out to the organizing committee for their level of support.”

Fugitives to entertain at pavilion
For the record
For 38 years, the Fugitives Dance Band has been entertaining crowds with their old time country and west-ern dance music. These born-and-raised Southern Manitoban farm-raised musi-cians know their stuff, and with years of experience (every member of the band has been involved with music since their teen years), they know how to get a crowd on its feet!
Enormously popular from their home in Southern Manitoba to points as far south as Mesa, Arizona, and Las Vegas, Nevada, and from Canada’s west coast to the Maritimes, the group is re-nowned for their “return engagements.” The band has always played New Year’s Eve events, but their home-town New Years Eve dance, which has been go-ing strong for 15 years, is legendary, an event which many would not miss.
Their road parties, which host bus-loads of travellers who accompany the band (including Henry Martens, Dianne Lodge, Cyn Lodge, and Bill Gray) on
their musical tours, are a popular vaca-tion option for music and dance lovers alike.
“The band has been invited to play in Las Vegas this February and also in Mesa, Arizona,” says band member Cyn Lodge. “While in Mesa, we’ve also been asked to open for the Dutton Show. This year has been very exciting, and we’ve been honoured to play so many venues.”
Coming home through Northern Cal-ifornia, the band will come to the Rock Creek Pavilion for Saturday and Sunday, Feb. 21-22. Saturday night dance from 7 to 11 p.m. and Sunday from 1 to 5 p.m. Advance tickets $15—their visit is being sponsored by the Bridesville Commu-nity Club.
Over 100 fans, all of whom are big sup-porters of the group, will be accompany-ing the band along on their February trip to wish them well and to take part
in the shows and dances along the route. While this trip may be nearly full, the band has plans for future adventures, which include a trip to Norsk Hostfest in Minot, North Dakota in October of 2015a an annual, nonprofit Scandina-vian Festival which was founded in 1978 to celebrate Nordic heritage. It is North America’s largest Scandinavian festival, hosting tens of thousands of attendees from all over the world.
“The Fugitives are looking forward to the coming year and want to thank everyone for their support and generos-ity,” says Dianne Lodge, vocalist of the group.

Our article last week on the Red Hat ladies lunch incorrectly tagged the queen of the Frolicking Fancies group in Greenwood as Frances String.
We were close on two counts: the error made it through the spell checker and we were close just because we were really, really close.
In fact the queen of the Frolicking Fancies is Francine Stringer. We sincerely apologize for the error.

Through the Phoenix foundation a variety of scholarship endowments have been established. Criteria is available through Boundary Central Secondary in Midway or Grand Forks Secondary in Grand Forks and on our website. Individuals or organizations wishing to set
up their own scholarship funds can contact the Phoenix Foundation.
A new study shows that a majority of hotels in the Boundary support a hotel tax with the money raised going into market-ing for those hotels.
If the plan goes through and is approved by the provincial government, local hotels would be charging each visitor two per cent extra on their bill.
The hotel tax was one of the main top-ics brought up at a recent meeting between shareholders Tuesday evening at the Com-munity Futures building in Grand Forks.
The meeting was hosted by the Chris-tina Gateway Community Development Association (CDA) but no official organi-zation has been formed yet for what would be a destination tourism group for the Boundary.
“We received money from SIBAC (Southern Interior Beetle Action Coali-tion) and that’s how Christina Gateway was able to contract me to go through the Boundary and do a tourism survey,” said Cindy Alblas, project coordinator for Christina Gateway CDA.
Albas said the survey looked at what the main opportunities in the region are as well as the main challenges.
“We also talked about ways we could improve our region and one of the ways is by choosing to collect the municipal regional district tax which is an up to two per cent tax that hotel accommodators with more than four or more rooms can charge,” she said. “This money would go to a destination market organization (DMO) that would be formed in our region.”
Alblas said the money raised from the tax is expected to be about $60,000 and is required to go only to the direct marketing of our region.
In order to charge the municipal re-gional district “hotel room” tax (MRDT), the organization needs 51 per cent support from all accommodators in the region as well 51 per cent support from all hotel rooms in the region.
Alblas said at this point they are at 68 per cent of accommodators and 72.5 per cent of rooms which are in sup-port of implementing this tax in our region. The tax would include the whole Boundary from Christina Lake up to, but not including Big White, which is already collecting the MRDT.
“We are in a good position to put in an application,” she
said.At the meeting on
Feb. 3, stakeholders heard presentations from tourism groups from both Rossland and Nelson as well as from
a representative from Thompson Okana-gan Tourism Association (TOTA), which is the regional representative for Destina-tion BC.
“They all talked about how their des-tination marketing organizations were established and how they have benefited their region,” said Alblas. “It was very evi-dent that every year they’ve had increased bed stays. That would be the mandate with our business plan as well.”
Alblas said all of the accommodators wanted to increase the length of the shoul-der season.
“The meeting was about bringing all of our stakeholders and partners together so we could have a discussion about how that destination marketing organization is go-ing to look in our region,” she said, “be-cause there are options we can look at. It was a very positive meeting; very hopeful.
The biggest positive of all of this is that we will have collaboration of all of our accom-modations as well as the tourism industry around the table region-wide. Now we have to be thinking regionally. We don’t live in a place with high population in each of our communities so we have to think collaboratively to move forward.”
Alblas said all the regions surrounding the Boundary are collecting the MRDT hotel tax and building their “tourism em-pires.”
“We are among the 10 per cent of B.C. which does not collect the MRDT,” she said.
“We need to begin ours and that’s what this destination marketing organization will help us do,” she said.
Alblas said they will continue to meet and decide on the next steps.

Rose and George Braun get set up with dinner as the Midway Community Club hosted a dinner and a movie night last Friday to kick off the Family Day weekend. Club chairperson Janice Lucas said they wanted to provide an inexpensive community get-together for the whole family. After dinner everyone got to watch Robin Williams in the movie Jack. The Bored Room Bistro catered the event and members of the Boundary Guiding Association helped serve and clean up.
The Village of Midway held a skills competition at the arena on the afternoon of Family Day. There were lots of games, smiles and laughs. They even organized a couple of canoe races on the ice.

Oldtimers host tourneyThere was non-stop adult rec hockey action
at the Midway arena on Family Day weekend as 11 teams met for the 6th Annual Oldtimers Hockey Tournament.
This year there were six men’s teams and five women’s teams.
The men’s teams were the Wenatchee Cher-ry Pickers, Osoyoos Rattlers, Nelson Roasters, Midway Loggers, Midway Ranchers and Grand Forks Boundary Electric.
Ladies teams were the Midway Ice Maidens,
Wenatchee Bad Apples, Nelson Diggers, Grand Forks Betty’s and Kelowna Ice Dragons.
To fit everyone into a schedule that ran from Friday evening through Sunday afternoon each game was set up for two 25-minute periods.
The Midway Oldtimers and the Midway Ice Maidens host the tournament each year. The four elementary schools in the West Bound-ary get in on the action too, filling banners with some great art.
The Midway Oldtimers pulled together two tough teams to challenge for local bragging rights this year – the Midway Loggers and the Midway Ranchers.
The Midway Ice Maidens practice every Wednesday night through the hockey season.
The Kootenay Boundary Hardwood Classic Sr. Girls Bas-ketball tournament took place at BCSS over the weekend; the senior boys teams played a tour-ney of their own in the gym at Grand Forks Senior Secondary.
There were five teams par-ticipating: the Nakusp Cougars, Selkirk Storm, Osoyoos Sec-ondary Rattlers, Grand Forks Wolves and Boundary Central Roadrunners.
There were some great games—BCSS vs. Nakusp had to go to overtime in their game on Saturday morning. MVP for the Roadrunners for the four games went to four play-ers: Maddie Baia, Kari Durban, Daniela Bergendahl and Daina Shaw.
The Roadrunners have an-other tournament this weekend in Castlegar and will play their finals in Nakusp on the Feb. 26-27.

Cupid’s connection
to loveHearts tend to be afl utt er on Valenti ne’s
Day, and Cupid just might be the scoundrel behind those starry-eyed feelings. Just who is this arrow-wielding Cupid and how did he become associated with Valenti ne’s Day?
God of love and desireAncient Greeks and Romans were prolifi c
storytellers and used mythology to explain many of the mysteries of life. Certain feelings and happen-ings on Earth were att ributed to the moods and acti ons of Gods who presided over the people.
In Roman mythology, Cupid was the god of desire, eroti c love, att racti on and aff ecti on. His Greek counterpart was Eros, while in Lati n Cupid was known as Amor. According to myth, Cupid was the son of the winged messenger Mercury and Venus, the goddess of love. Cupid’s machinati ons were oft en guided by his mother’s hand, and matchmaking remained his most well-known trait.
As ti me went on and Christi an infl uences pushed out ancient Greek and Roman be-liefs, Cupid was seen as an angel of heav-enly and earthly love. Cupid could easily be mistaken for many other angelic cherubim portrayed in artwork during the Renais-sance period. Eventually Cupid became a
popular icon of Valenti ne’s Day.
Cupid’s appearanceCupid has appeared in diff erent ways in
illustrati ons and other artwork through-out history. Someti mes he is depicted as a winged, chubby infant carrying a bow and a quiver of arrows. Classical Greek art depicts Cupid as a slender, winged youth.
The reason Cupid has wings is because lovers are known to be fl ighty and change their moods and minds with some frequency. He is boyish because love is irrati onal, and he carries arrows and a torch because love can both wound but also infl ame the heart.
Cupid has traditi onally been portrayed as benevo-lent, if not mischievous. Aft er all, his goal is to bring two
lovers together. His arsenal was equipped with two diff erent kinds of arrows. People pierced by gold-ti pped arrows would succumb to uncontrollable desire. Those affl icted by an arrow with a blunt ti p of lead desired only to fl ee.
“Cupid and Psyche”
Cupid may have been responsible for bringing many people together with his special arrows, but he also was granted the opportunity to experience love himself. Ac-cording to the myth of “Cupid and Psyche,” Psyche was a beauti ful woman whose ap-pearance rivaled even that of Venus. People
grew enchanted by her beauty and started to neglect the worship of Venus. Jealous of this att enti on, Venus asked Cupid to make Psyche fall in love with a monster. But when Cupid saw how beauti ful Psyche was, he ac-cidentally dropped the arrow meant for her and pricked himself instead. He immediately became enamored with her.
Psyche, who had not been able to marry like her other sisters, feared she had been cursed by the gods in some way. She was sent away to avoid the premoniti on of mar-rying a monster, but Cupid, hidden from sight, ended up visiti ng Psyche and gain-ing her trust and aff ecti on. The pair then married, although Psyche had never seen her husband in the light of day because he forbade her to look upon him. Aft er all, he was a god and she was a mortal.
One night Psyche disobeyed Cupid’s edict and snuck a peek by candlelight. She was amazed by his beauty and became startled, wounding herself on one of his arrows. Psyche ended up dropping hot wax on Cu-pid, which woke him up and he ran off .
Psyche wandered endlessly trying to fi nd her lost husband and had to go through various trials established by a sti ll-jealous Venus. In one of her trials, she ended up getti ng put to sleep, but Cupid revived her and pleaded with Jupiter to make Psyche immortal and let her be his true wife. Jupi-ter ulti mately granted that wish.
Cupid will forever be connected to the concepts of love and aff ecti on, which is why he has become an unoffi cial symbol of Valenti ne’s Day.
About the heart and loveHearts and Valenti ne’s Day are forever intertwined. One of the most recognizable sym-
bols of love is the modest heart, and hearts adorn candy boxes and cookies while paper hearts are pinned to doors or windows as a symbol of Valenti ne’s Day. Young valenti nes may share candy hearts printed with silly senti ments.
A symbolic heart bears no resemblance to an anatomical heart, and yet it is used to represent the deepest feelings of aff ecti on a person can share. Some may wonder just how the emoti ons of love became ti ed up in the shape of a heart, even though it’s widely known that the brain, and not the heart, governs aff ecti ons.
In ancient ti mes, people believed that the heart was the center of all human emoti ons. Since the heart is prominently located in the center of the chest and the middle of the body, it became the cornerstone of human feelings. Love is considered to be one of the most profound and strongest human emoti ons, therefore it was reasoned that the feeling must emanate from the heart.
