It’s not every village that can boast longshore drift as the
reason for its existence, Borth however is one that can and seems
to be a recent phenomenon. Along the beach beyond the buildings of
Borth, the submerged forest can be seen at low tide. Bones and tree
remains have been seen here and the recent discovery of deer
antlers confirm that this stretch of land once flourished when the
sea-level was lower.
Sarn Cynfelyn is the most southerly of three such formations and
together with the sunken forest at Borth have been the inspiration
for the legend known locally as the lost land of Cantre’r
Gwaelod.
Cantre’r Gwaelod was a rich lowland part of Ceredigion with
ramparts and sluices. The responsibility of closing the sluices
fell to Seithennyn.
A combination of a great storm at sea and Seithennyn’s
regrettable dereliction of duty, led the sea to breach the defences
and sweep inland leaving Gwyddno, the Kingdom’s ruler, high and dry
on a relatively infertile part of his kingdom.
Six thousand years later and Borth has the modern-day accolade
of being one of the key filming locations for the BBC Wales Nordic
Noir television series Hinterland. Cors Fochno, the boat yard where
the River Leri reaches the sea and Borth station have featured
prominently in the internationally acclaimed award-winning
series.
Today on a calm and quiet day, some say they can hear the bells
of the drowned church of Cantre’r Gwaelod. Sit and wonder at the
story and possibly listen quietly for the ringing of that submerged
bell.

Nid pob pentref all honni mai’r rheswm dros ei fodolaeth yw
drifft arfordirol. Mae’r Borth yn un ohonynt ac ymddengys yn
ffenomen ddiweddar. Ar hyd y traeth y tu hwnt i adeiladau Borth,
gellir gweld y fforest danfor pan fydd y môr ar drai. Mae esgyrn a
gweddillion coed wedi cael eu gweld yma ac, yn ddiweddar,
cadarnhawyd bod cysylltiad rhwng cyrn carw a ddarganfuwyd ar y
traeth a’r ddamcaniaeth bod y darn yma o dir ar un adeg wedi ffynnu
pan oedd lefel y mor yn is.
Sarn Cynfelyn yw’r mwyaf deheuol o dri ffurfiant o’r fath ac
ynghyd â’r fforest danddwr yn Y Borth, mae wedi bod yn
ysbrydoliaeth i’r chwedl a elwir yn lleol fel tir coll Cantre’r
Gwaelod.
Roedd Cantre’r Gwaelod yn ardal o dir isel cyfoethog yng
Ngheredigion gyda gwrthgloddiau a llifddorau. Cyfrifoldeb
Seithennyn oedd cau’r llifddorau.
Arweiniodd cyfuniad o storm fawr ar y môr a Seithennyn yn
esgeuluso’i ddyletswyddau, at y môr yn chwalu’r amddiffynfeydd ac
yn llifo dros y tir gan adael Gwyddno, rheolwr y deyrnas, ar dir
cymharol anffrwythlon o’i deyrnas.
Chwe mil o flynyddoedd yn ddiweddarach ac mae Borth yn enwog am
fod yn lleoliad allweddol ar gyfer ffilmio cyfres deledu BBC Cymru,
Y Gwyll. Mae Cors Fochno, yr iard gychod lle mae Afon Leri yn
cyrraedd y môr a gorsaf Y Borth yn amlwg yn y gyfres sydd wedi cael
sylw mawr yn rhyngwladol.
Heddiw, ar ddiwrnod tawel, dywed rhai eu bod yn gallu clywed sŵn
clychau eglwys Cantre’r Gwaelod. Eisteddwch a rhyfeddwch at y stori
a gwrandewch yn ofalus am sŵn y gloch danddwr honno.

Borth - Ynyslas
1 From the RNLI Lifeboat Station, cross over onto the pebble
beach then on to the sandy beach (at low tide only). Pass several
mounds of stone on your left that form part of the sea defences.
(At high tide, walk through the village towards the end of the
promenade, passing Maen y Clochydd slate statue (Stone of the
Bell), the toilets and interpretation for the submerged
forest).
2 Leave the pebbled/sandy beach near the Maen y Clochydd and the
public toilets. Here you’ll see some interesting information about
the legend of Cantre’r Gwaelod.
3 At the end of the tarmacked walkway stop for a moment to see
interpretation about the submerged forest, then drop down to the
right, then left along a track that runs along the roadside.
Continue along the track until it reaches a point to cross the road
(A4353). Take care to look both right and left here. Cross
carefully to join track with the golf links course now right and
left to you.
4 Follow the track right, keeping the large green building on
your left. Walk up to gate and, after looking both directions,
cross railway track. You now enter the Dyfi/Aberleri National
Nature Reserve. Walk straight on between two telegraph poles.
Continue for some while until you reach a signpost. Turn left here
and walk along the track with the River Leri on your right hand
side and reed beds on your left.
5 Continue until you reach a gate and cross the River Leri over
the bridge with railway line now on you left. Continue through two
gates until you arrive at the level crossing. Take care here at all
times. Cross the railway track and follow the roadside, crossing a
bridge over the River Leri once again.
6 Near the Ynyslas Boatyard, continue straight ahead through the
gate near the cattle grid and signposted Ceredigion Coast Path.
7 Where the tarmacked road veers left continue ahead through two
small gates then continue in the same direction through two larger
gates. Arrive at the road, look both ways, and cross to the other
side now heading across the golf links course reaching the pebbled
beach. Turn right and walk along the beach. Depending on the tide,
the sandy beach will be the best option!
8 Continue along the beach. Keep an eye out for the second entry
point (sign posted National Nature Reserve 520 m).
9 Follow a well-trodden sand track inland towards Ynyslas
Visitor Centre, part of the Dyfi National Nature Reserve, joining
sand-covered boardwalk over to the visitor centre.
10 Arrive at the visitor centre and have a well-earned
picnic. The dunes that surround the Visitor Centre are havens for
wildlife and much of the dune area is covered with marram grass.
These are the dunes featured in the short kite flying ident shown
before programmes on BBC television.
11 To return to the start of the walk, continue through the
Visitor Centre turning right and follow the boardwalk back towards
the pebbled/sandy beach. Here you have views of the sand dunes that
cover this part of Ceredigion and see Borth in the distance.
12 Once on the beach and with the sea on your right, continue
south towards the submerged forest that will be viewed at low
tide.
13 Keep an eye out for the walkway to your left after a series
of groynes and follow this back into Borth and to the RNLI Lifeboat
Station.
