P99 Name: Boris Petrovich Babkin, 1877-1950 Boris Babkin fonds.-
1914-1948.- 78 cm of textual records. Biographical Sketch: Boris
Babkin was born in Russia, and received his M.D. from the
Military-Medical Academy of St. Petersburg in 1904. It was there
that he met the pioneering physiologist Ivan P. Pavlov. He worked
as Pavlov’s assistant until 1912, and they remained close friends
throughout Babkin’s life, and in 1949 he published a biography of
Pavlov. From 1912 until 1922, Babkin taught physiology at various
Russian Institutes, but in 1922 political considerations forced him
into exile in London. After a short period as professor of
physiology at Dalhousie University, he joined McGill’s Faculty of
Medicine in 1928. This inaugurated an active period of research and
publishing, particularly on glandular secretions and the nervous
system. After his retirement, in 1942, Babkin continued at McGill
as a research fellow in physiology and neurology, and as an
associate of the Montreal Neurological Institute. Custodial
History: Old accession number 390. Scope and Content: The fonds
documents mainly Babkin’s professional interests in physiology,
especially glandular secretions and the nervous system. The fonds
contains correspondence; lecture notes; citations; research notes
and papers, including manuscripts sent to him by his colleagues;
reprints of scientific articles mainly in Russian; and material
used in the preparation of the biography of Ivan Pavlov. The latter
contains correspondence with Ivan Petrovich Pavlov and members of
his family, 1923-1948; photographs and portraits; and an unabridged
typescript copy of Parts 1-3 of Pavlov: a Biography, with
manuscript corrections, 1943-1946. Source of supplied title proper:
Based on the documents in the fonds. Language: The documents are in
English and Russian. Finding Aids: Inventory list available.
General Note: See also McGill University Archives, M.G. 1071 and
Osler Library Archives P118. Conservation and description of the
fonds to be done.

FOREWORD
At the suggestion of the staff of the Osler Library of the
History of Medicine, I agreed to offer certain suggested practical
assignments dealing with collections in that Library when the
course 405-645A began in the fall of 1975. Tania Gom and Pamela
Cline asked t9 do a guide jointly, to the papers of the late
Professor Boris P. Babkin. Both students had some considerable
ability in the Russian language.
A sheet of paper has two dimensions, a volume, three. Somehow or
other only the top to bottom measurement was provided in this
guide. Otherwise this joint effort provides a reasonably
satisfactory guide to an interesting body of material.

INTRODUCTION
Boris Petrovicb Babkin, Professor of Physiology at McGill
University
from 1928 to 1942, as a proainent figore in the field of
:physiological
resea~h. especially in the area of glandular secretion and the
nervous
system. Dr. Babk:iJ1 was a pupil, assistant and life-long friend
of Ivan F.
Pavlov, of whom be 1'I'1"0te a biography' in 1949.
Dr.Babld.n was.bom in Kurek, Russia in 1877. In 1901, he
began
post-graduate study in' the History of Medicine' at· the tali
tary-blfedical
Academy in St. Petersburg. Babld.n had decided that clinical
medicine as
such held no interest f~ him, although the science of medicine
itself had
_ great attraction. For this reason, Babkin hoped to combine his
study of
•
Medical History wi tb actual experience in its clinical and
experimental
aspects. In this connection, be first entered the laboratory of
Ivan Pavlov
at the Il1eiitute of Exper1mental Medicine. Although Pavlov met
Babldnts
avowal 0" tnterest in Medical History, which he considered
purely academic, wi tb rather vehement conta.pt, he nevertheless
agreed to let the yOlmg
Babkin join his laboratory. Babkin was thus initiated into the
methods
of physiological resenrch in which his interest grew to such an
extent that .s
its study, with the tiIIe and discipline required, superpeded
his progress
not only in the clinical aspects of medicine, but in Medical
History itself.
By 1902, Babkin had decided definitely to become a
physiolot;ist. He
therefore remained as an assistant in Pavlov·s laboratory until
1912. The
infiuenc4tof this period was undoubtedly v8"J:'y great, and is
clearly reflected

in the research interests ~ursued by Babkin for the rest of his
life.
• in 1912 t '1)r. Babkin was appointed to the Chair of Animal
Physiology
at the Agricultural Institute of Novo Alexandria. In 1915, he
went to the
University of Odessa as Professor of Physiology. However, in
1922. Babkin
was forced to leave Russia for political reasons. The details of
this erisode
are obscure. B~bkin went to London, where he worked for a time
in the la.bora-
tory of Sir 'Ernest Starling. After emigrating to America,
Ba.bkin received
an apPointment as Professor of Physiology at Dalhousie Uni versi
ty, Halifaz.
a position which he held until 1928 when he came to McGill.
Babkin was a
Research Professor of Physiology at McGill University until
1946, ~~d held
the position of Department Chairman in 1940-1941. In addition,
he w~.s elso
a Research Fellow in Physiology from 1942 'lmtil 1947. After
1946, T)r. Bobkin
'flaS associated with the Montreal Neurological Institute and
simulte.neously ,
~s Research Fellow ot Neurology at McGill. The year before his
deeth in
1950, Dr. Babkin r.s awarded the Julius Friedenwald iledal for
1949 by the
American Gastroenterological Association.
'l'hroughout his life, Dr. Babkin continueC his experimental
work and
produced many scientific articl~s. In addition, he and his wife
Elena
carried on a personal correspondence wi tb Ivan Pavlov and his
family. Babkin
left a considerable collection of materials to 1:!cGill
University. In 1968,
the B~bkin Collection was transferred to the Osler Librar,y from
the Depart-
ment of Experimental Surgery. At that time, the collection
cO'!'lsistec of
eight boxes and fifteen folders of material, collected or
written by Dr.
Babkin. Tbe "collection included ca. 2,000 reprints, l10stly
from the 1920's
to the 1940's, and. nine groups of manuscripts. The c.ecision
w~s made to
retain all manuscript material at Osler. Tbe bulk of the reprint

relating to '9abkin I s interest in the glands of the body,
their regulation
• and control, was esto.blished. The Osler Library retained all
those reprints
in the Russian language, all presentation copies, and all
pre-1930 items.
The Babldn Collection now at Osler consists of six bozes of
materials.
The first two bozes are largely lecture notes and miscellaneous
material
relating to Babkin t S professional. interests. Three bozea
contain the retained
reprints. The six:th boz contains materials used by Dr. BaWn in
the prepara-
tion of his biography of Ivan Pavlov; that is, manuscript
correspondence
from the Pavlovs, ~hotograPhs and facsimiles and the typescript
co~,. of the
biography itself.
