As I was thinking about the tournament and the dreams of the many players who see this as a chance to make a name for themselves if they have a great tournament, I started to think about when I was in school and one of the worst experi- ences for many people—choosing teams for sports. When I was in school, most of the time teams were chosen by hav- ing two captains (normally two of the best players) and then they would take turns picking the people who would be on their team. I can remember the fear that came from this experience—the fear of being chosen last (or near the end). I was always average in sports—never had great skills or speed and people did not really see me as an althete. Thus, I never got chosen first or second or third or so on. I was rarely the last one taken, but I did feel bad for that person or two at the end when the captains would say, ‘You take so and so, I do not want them! For I knew that one day that could be me. While our world judges people like this; the good news is that God does not. God never chooses anyone last! God has a new math, where He chooses everyone first! Too many times, I think we are jealous because we do not see ourselves as gifted or that our gifts and talents are not as important or significant as somebody else. The TRUTH is that God does not rank which gifts are more significant or important—the only criteria that matters is whether or not we know what our gifts are and whether we use them!! In order for the church, the body of Christ, to be effective and fulfill it’s mission is for everyone in the church to allow themselves to be used by God for His purpose (afterall we do pray—thy will be done —do we truly mean this!). This means that the church needs everyone to understand what their gifts and talents are and use them for the glory of God and the building up of the kingdom. Do you know what your gifts and talents are? Do you use them? Do you think that you are significant to God? Know this!! You do have gifts and talents! You are significant to God! If you have questions about your gifts or whether or not you are significant, pray that God will reveal to you your worth and how you can be used. You can also talk with me or others about how they see God using you for His purpose. God always wants you on His team and has already chosen you. When did God Chose You? What did He chose you for? When were you Chosen?

As I write this article, March Maddness is getting ready to begin—I love this time of year for college basketball. In fact, this is about the only time of the year where I really pay attention to college baskball. I always enjoy filling in a bracket and testing my ability to pick winners against others. As I was thinking about the tournament and the dreams of the many players who see this as a chance to make a name for themselves if they have a great tournament, I started to think about when I was in school and one of the worst experi-ences for many people—choosing teams for sports. When I was in school, most of the time teams were chosen by hav-ing two captains (normally two of the best players) and then they would take turns picking the people who would be on their team. I can remember the fear that came from this experience—the fear of being chosen last (or near the end). I was always average in sports—never had great skills or speed and people did not really see me as an althete. Thus, I never got chosen first or second or third or so on. I was rarely the last one taken, but I did feel bad for that person or two at the end when the captains would say, ‘You take so and so, I do not want them!’ For I knew that one day that could be me. In order for the church, the body of Christ, to be effective and fulfill it’s mission is for everyone in the church to allow themselves to be used by God for His purpose (afterall we do pray—thy will be done—do we truly mean this!). This means that the church needs everyone to understand what their gifts and talents are and use them for the glory of God and the building up of the kingdom. April 7th: Text—John 20:19-31

The text for the Second Sunday of Easter is the story of Doubting Thomas. Jesus appears to the disciples, but Thomas was not with them the first time and boldly proclaims that he cannot believe unless he sees for himself. How are we like Thomas? What doubts do you have? Is it okay to have doubts? April 14th:

Text—John 21:1-19 Today we hear of an encounter between Jesus and the disciples after he had been raised from the dead. In this encoun-ter, they are by the water and have gone fishing and are catching nothing. Jesus appears to them without them knowing who it was and tells them where they will find fish (the right side of the boat). After the catch, they share a meal. Fi-nally, Jesus restores Peter by telling him that he loves him and he is to go and feed and tend Jesus’ sheep.

April 21st:

Text—John 10:22-30 This Sunday in the church year is called ‘Good Shepherd Sunday.’ Jesus talks about his followers as sheep. He tells us that His sheep listen to his voice. How do you hear Jesus’ voice?

April 28th:

Text—John 13:31-35 Jesus while eating the Last Supper with the disciples gives them a new commandment. This commandment is to love one another as Jesus has first loved us. Jesus indicates that love will be the distinctive mark of Jesus’ disciples. How do we love others?

Upcoming Worship Below are the lessons and some thoughts about the upcoming Sun-days. Please take some time to look over the lesson and reflect upon the questions in preparation of the upcoming weeks in worship.

Mission Spotlight—Clothing Center

The Clothing Center is located 207 N. Pine St and is open Monday through Thursday from 1:30 PM until 4:00 PM. Its mission is to provide clothing, bedding and household items without cost or obligation. The Clothing Center offers a barrage of gently used clothing, shoes, coats, bedding, household goods, books, toiletries and more. All items are free of charge but available on a limited basis. Some of the high demand items are: new children’s underwear, new children’s socks, new toiletries, any size of children’s diapers. If you would like to support the Clothing Center with items, please wash any gently used items and they can be dropped off at the Clothing Center or put in the Mission Outreach closet near the main entrance of the church. The Clothing Center does not take electrical items, furniture or junk. In order to support the Clothing Center monetarily, you can at any time mark on the offering envelope a gift for Clothing Center. These gifts will be forwarded to the Clothing Center. The Clothing Center is also in need of volunteers. Our congregation helps on the 4th Wednesdays and 5th Mondays (if there is one). Volunteers do a variety of tasks—helping people check out, bagging up items for individuals, folding clothes, sorting through donations, etc. If you are interested in volunteer-ing at the Clothing Center, please talk with Mandy Otte.

MISSION CARE:

A big “thanks” to all who donated books during the Lenten season this year. Over 200 books were col-lected! These books will be donated to Lutheran Outdoor Ministries Reading Camp, a week long summer camp devoted to struggling readers. The books collected at St. Paul will be given to attendees to take home with them after camp, and used to practice their skills throughout the summer. If you have questions about donating new or gently used books or questions about the camp, contact Susie Alstatt at 524.0947. The food pantry item for April is peanut butter. Please place your donations in the wooden box in the hall-way near the kitchen, or in the basket near the main entry doors. Donations are given to food pantries at Pro-visions, Anchor House, and Human Services. Lutheran World Relief blanket makers have been busy working toward their goal of providing 250 blankets to be given to people all over the world who are in desperate need of warmth and shelter. These blankets, as well as school kits, fabric kits, personal care kits, and baby care kits will be dedicated during services on April 28th and taken to Indianapolis for shipping the first week in May. If you would like to help decorate the sanctu-ary and altar for the dedication, meet at the church at 9:00 AM on Saturday April 27th. If you are able to trans-port items to Indy, please contact Jan Otte or Wendy in the church office. Quarterly Red Cross blood drive dates have been changed! The remaining 2013 drives will take place in the preschool room on June 23rd, August 18th, and November 3rd. Watch for details and a sign-up sheet at the Welcome Center a couple weeks before each drive. Your continued support of the blood drives is appreci-ated. As sponsors of these quarterly blood drives, St. Paul-Borchers shows leadership in our community by encouraging folks to give blood and SAVE LIVES. Thanks to those who are able and willing to share this precious gift of life! IT’S TIME FOR SPRING CLEANING! Several folks have offered to do basic handyman jobs and cleaning chores for anyone who needs assistance. Contact Trish if you would like some help.

HEALTH & WELLNESS CARE:

Don’t forget to get active in the WINGS “Walk tHis Way” event on SUNDAY, April 28th. Look for details elsewhere in this news-letter, and plan an afternoon of physical activity for the whole family! Care for God’s creation! St. Paul-Borchers will hold an Earth Day event on Saturday, April 20th in the church parking lot. Jackson County Recycling District representatives will be on site from 9 AM to 12 PM to collect household recyclables, household hazardous waste, electronics, and there will also be a container on site to collect scrap steel.(Profit from steel recy-cling will go to the first group to present a good idea for its use to Trish.) A variety of additional activities is being planned, in-cluding Swap & Giveaway Tables, Garden Plant Giveaway Ta-bles, Children’s Recycling Activity, Door Prizes, and more! Look for details elsewhere in this newsletter and in your Wel-come insert on Sundays. If you are planning to clean out your garage or attic soon, this is a great opportunity to get rid of some things, and maybe find some free treasures for yourself!

CRISIS CARE: Recently the High School youth held a breakfast to benefit the family of Helen Carter of Cortland. Helen is re-covering from a brain stem stroke brought on by complications from spinal meningitis. Helen is currently undergo-ing rehabilitation at Kindred in Green-wood. We are still looking for opportuni-ties to help as Helen’s condition changes and the family’s needs change. Please watch future newslet-ters and your Sunday Welcome folders for updates. Please continue to pray for the Carter family.

FRIENDLY CARE:

St. Paul-Borchers will be welcoming several new members into our church family during services on April 21st. Please welcome these folks during a reception which will be held in the church narthex between services on that Sunday. Military news has been buzzing recently. Heidi Wheatley re-ports that all of the soldiers serving overseas, to whom mem-bers have been writing letters, have now returned to U.S. soil. Thanks so much to those of you who cared enough to give of your time to write letters to soldiers who were far from home. Your thoughtfulness surely helped encourage them. Recently retired from the military are the following: Mike Albert, hus-band of member Beth Albert; John Herkamp, son of members Nolan & Carmen Herkamp; Steven Toppe and Andrew Toppe, sons of member Jennifer Benter. We thank God for the service of these men. Still serving in this country are the following gentlemen: Paul Herkamp (AZ), son of members Nolan & Car-men Herkamp; Chad Brigdon (KY), husband of member Karen Brigdon; Steven Rieker (CA), grandson of members Jerry & Pixie Otte; and Evan Marshall (NM), grandson of members Ronnie & Patty Herkamp. Susan Kaiser sends occasional greeting cards, made by our card makers, to these soldiers and their families. Thanks, Susan!

Honoring Jeanette Kruse

You are invited to show your appreciation for the many faithful years of service of Jeanette Kruse. Jeanette has been the preschool director for the past 27 years. During that time, she has shaped and formed many of the youth of the congregation and the community. She has been diligent in helping young children to be ready for school as well as help in building a Christian foundation for them. As a way of showing our appreciation for the many years of service and working with so many young children through the years, we want to recognize Jeanette in a couple of ways:

• First, we ask that you send a card along with a note to Jeanette expressing thanks and appreciation as she is now retiring from the preschool. Please send your card directly to Jeanette. Her address is 9853 N. 100 E. Sey- mour, IN 47274 • Second, we want to give a gift to Jeanette as an expression of our gratitude for her many years of faithful service. If you would like contribute to the gift for Jeanette, please give your donation to Pastor Steve by May 1st. The plan is to present the gift to Jeanette at Preschool Graduation (which is on May 15th). • Third, we are going to recognize Jeanette at some point during a worship service and present a plaque that commemorates her many years of service to the preschool.

All people are invited to participate in one way or another in honoring Jeanette—whether you attended the preschool or have had a child or grandchild who attended the preschool, or even if you have not had much interaction you are encouraged to be a part of honoring Jeanette. Additionally, if you know of others who were a part of the preschool (but may not receive this notice) you are encour-aged to share this with them so that they might also become a part of honoring Jeanette.

We are attempting to make the gift to Jeanette a surprise, so please try not to share this information with her directly.

Any questions, please talk with Pastor Steve.
