DAYTON FLYERS (16-12, 6-8 A-10) OPENING TIP St. Bonaventure looks to set a program record for most regular-season A-10 road wins (five) while simultaneously clinching a berth in the Atlantic 10 Championship and extending its winning streak to four in a row when the Bonnies face off with Dayton on the Flyers’ Senior Day Wednesday. Bonaventure, which with only two regular-season games remaining could finish as high as 6th or possibly out of the tournament, knows that one win will guarantee a spot in the 12-team A-10 Championship next week. With Dayton and George Washington both at 6-8 in the A-10 and facing each other on Saturday, only one of those teams will be able to get to seven league wins. The Bonnies and Flyers enter Wednesday’s vital tilt as two of the hottest teams in the A-10, separated by just one game in the conference standings and by one spot in the RPI (SBU: 105, UD: 104). Bonaventure has won three in a row – the third-longest streak by any A-10 team – while Dayton has won two straight to claw back into postseason position after being 4-8 just a week ago. Bona will be looking to claim its first win at UD Arena since the 2001-02 season, a streak of four straight setbacks. LAST TIME OUT Bonaventure tied a program record by scoring 104 points against a current A-10 member as the Bonnies rolled to a 104-83 victory over Charlotte Saturday night at the Reilly Center. Eric Mosley scored a game-high 23 points to continue his robust play over the last six games, and Matthew Wright added 20 for the Bonnies. The Brown and White also had two 20-point scorers against Massachusetts on Feb. 20 for the first time since the 2010-11 season, and it now has happened in two of the last three games. Freshman Dion Wright scored a career-high 15 points on 6-7 shooting; the California native had 17 total points on the year entering the game. DÉJÀ VU? One year after making a late-season push to win its first A-10 Championship, St. Bonaventure is well on its way to duplicating that success this year. The Bonnies won four of their last five games at the end of last year to earn a bye in the tournament and then parlayed that finish into a conference title. Bonaventure could at least duplicate that finish with a split of its final two games this week, but is aiming to enter the postseason on a five-game winning streak. Also, once again Bona is getting a scoring weapon to step up. Last year, First Round NBA Draft Pick Andrew Nicholson averaged 27.6 points per game over the final five regular-season games. This year, Eric Mosley is putting SBU on his back as he’s averaging an eerily similar 27 points per game over the last four games. leaDer oF the (WolF) PacKSenior Demitrius Conger leads the Bonnies in scoring (13.9 ppg), rebounding (7.2 rpg), assists (3.2 apg), free-throw percentage (86.4) and minutes played (36.3 mpg). Conger is the only player in the A-10 who leads his team in scoring, rebounding and assists. Among A-10 players, Conger is 14th in scoring, 8th in rebounding, 5th in free-throw percentage and 2nd in minutes played.
QuicK hitters# If Michael Davenport appears in the game Wednesday, he will tie the St. Bonaventure career games played record of 126, set by David Messiah Capers from 1995-2000.
# Demitrius Conger has made 90 consecutive starts.
# Saturday’s game against Charlotte marked the second straight home game SBU and its opponent combined to score more than 100 points in the second half..
# The starting lineup of Conger, Mosley, Johnson, Matthew Wright and Youssou Ndoye (starters for the last three games) is now 5-1 on the year, easily the best record of an SBU starting group this year.
# Charlotte scored 42 bench points on Saturday, representing the most bench points Bona has allowed an opponent to score in a game this year.
# Davenport secured a season-high five rebounds against the 49ers Saturday, the 28th time in his career he’s grabbed five or more rebounds in a game.
# St. Bonaventure ranks in the top-75 nationally in four different statistical categories, and Eric Mosley is among the country’s elite from beyond the arc:
Mosley: 3-Point Percentage: 45.1, 7thMosley: 3-Pointers Per Game: 2.74, 34th
DisciPlineD From the Free-throW line
For the third time in head coach Mark Schmidt’s sixth year at the helm of SBU, the Bonnies are on pace to finish in the top-3 of the Atlantic 10 in free-throw percentage. Bonaventure currently leads the league and is 10th nationally at 76.1 percent. The Brown and White was 3rd last year (76.1) and 1st in 2007-08 (75.2).
jorDan’s historic niGhtAs part of his career-high 18-point night at Richmond on Feb. 16, sophomore Jordan Gathers did not miss a shot, going 7-7 from the floor. With that performance, he became the first St. Bonaventure player in more than 16 years to attempt at least seven shots without missing. Robert Blackwell went 7-7 from the floor in a game at Massachusetts nearly 16 years to the day (Feb. 11, 1997).
uncommon roaD WarriorsWith a win at Dayton, St. Bonaventure would set a single-season record for most road wins in A-10 play with five. Bonaventure currently has four A-10 road wins, something it has done on five different occasions, but not once since the 1999-2000 campaign. The Bonnies are 4-3 away from the generally friendly confines of the Reilly Center; additionally, St. Bonaventure has never had a better road record than a home record in an A-10 season (3-4 at home this year).
small marGin For errorEleven of St. Bonaventure’s first 13 Atlantic 10 games were decided by 10 points or less. Only one other time have 11 of SBU’s first 13 A-10 games been decided by that margin, and that came during the 1982-83 season. Four of those have been decided by three points or less. Bona is 1-3 in those games, just three defensive stops and scores away from being 4-0, boasting a 10-4 A-10 record and in position for a first-round bye. The most A-10 games in a single season decided by 10 points or less in program history is 13 in 2001-02.
streaKinG at the Best timeDuring its three-game winning streak, St. Bonaventure is averaging 93.7 points per game and outscoring its opponents by 11 points per outing. The Bonnies have shot 52.4 percent (87-166) from the floor over those three games, including 42.9 percent (24-56) from 3-point range. The Bonnies – who are the nation’s 10th-best free-throw shooting team – have hit 84.7 percent of their free throw attempts during that time (83-98). Individually, Demitrius Conger has corralled 35 rebounds during the streak, coming out to an average of 11.7 boards per game.
startinG oFF the riGht WayThe Bonnies put together their best first half of basketball this year on Saturday against Charlotte, setting season highs for points, field-goal percentage and largest lead. SBU raced out to a 22-5 start, hit 9-12 3-point attempts, shot 62.5 percent from the field (15-24) and took a 53-24 lead into the halftime break.
GunninG For nineWith a pair of wins in their last two regular season games, the Bonnies will have exactly nine A-10 wins for the first time since the 2000-01 season. Additionally, coupled with the 10 A-10 wins from last year, Bonaventure would have 19 A-10 wins over the last two years – a total not matched since the 1999-00 and 2000-01 campaigns produced 20 league victories combined.
sPortscenter’s toP 10Both Youssou Ndoye and Demitrius Conger were featured on SportsCenter’s Top 10 Plays
on Jan. 16. Ndoye (No. 8) emphatically rejected two Xavier shots in a span of 13 seconds on the same defensive trip for the Bonnies. Conger (No. 7) threw down a one-handed tomahawk dunk over a Xavier defender just minutes later.
mosley on near-recorD PaceEric Mosley is connecting at a 45.1-percent clip from 3-point range, currently good for the second-best single-season 3-point percentage in program history. The senior is ahead of the third-best season (Richard McCormick, 43.8), who also owns the program’s best single-season percentage (45.5 in 1986-87).
Mosley, who has 74 3-point makes this year, is also tied for 7th on the program’s all-time single-season list for made 3-pointers, and can move into solo 6th with just two long-range makes. The single-season record for made 3’s is 101, set by Chris Matthews in the 2009-10 campaign. The Louisville native has hit five 3-pointers in a game five times, including four times in the last six games, and has hit five or more in a game on six occasions.
history on its siDeSince the Atlantic 10/Eastern 8 conducted its first conference tournament in 1977, only four tournament champions have finished with a sub-.500 record in league play the season after winning the conference title: Saint Joseph’s (3-13 in 1997-98), Rhode Island (2-14 in 1999-00), George Washington (5-11 in 2007-08) and Richmond (7-9 in 2011-12). Those four teams are also the only clubs to finish worse than 5th place in the conference standings in the season following a tournament title.
The worst finish in the conference standings following a tournament championship is URI’s 12th-place finish (last) in 1999-00. GW finished 13th out of 14 teams in 2006-07.
toP 100 on the same cluBThis year’s St. Bonaventure team could go down as one of the most prolific offensive squads – in terms of individual players – in program history. Currently five players are already on the top-100 scoring list in school history:
Eric Mosley: 591 – 77thChris Johnson: 548 – T-86th
Matthew Wright: 548 – T-86th
Additionally, Charlon Kloof could join that group by the end of the year. Kloof has 355, and if he reaches at least 437 career points this season, the 2012-13 team will become the first team since the 2005-06 squad with six of the top-100 all-time scorers.
That 2005-06 team includes: Michael Lee (1,427 – 16th), Ahmad Smith (1,261 – 24th), Patrick Lottin (949 – 44th), Tyler Relph (754 – 62nd), Paul Williams (584 – 82nd) and A.J. Hawkins (524 – 87th).
The last team to have seven players finish in the top-100 in scoring was the 1999-2000 NCAA Tournament club: J.R. Bremer (1,732 – 9th), Tim Winn (1,407 – 17th), Caswell Cyrus (1,121 – 27th), Patricio Prato (1,110 – 30th), Peter Van Paasen (978 – 39th) David Messiah Capers (972 – 41st) and Vidal Massiah (703 – 70th).
next uPSt. Bonaventure wraps up its 2012-13 regular season with a home game against Fordham on Saturday at 4 p.m. Bona’s four seniors – Demitrius Conger, Eric Mosley, Chris Johnson and Michael Davenport – will be honored prior to tipoff as SBU looks to continue its postseason push.
Demitrius Conger is just the third St. Bonaventure player to amass 1,000 points, 500 rebounds and 200 assists in a career.

Additionally, Conger ranks second in the A-10 in minutes played per game (36.3). The forward leads the Bonnies in minutes played by a wide margin as he’s logged 980 minutes of action with Chris Johnson second at 780. Additionally, Conger has played six straight complete games, and over the last 11 games the Brooklyn native has played in 444 out of a possible 450 minutes. Furthermore, in conference games he has played 538 of a possible 570 minutes (94.3 percent). If Conger continues on his average, he will have logged the third-most action by any Bona player in a single season (Tim Winn: 1,112 minutes in 1999-2000 and Ogo Adegboye: 1,209 in 2010-11). Adegboye led the nation in minutes played that season.
historical niGhts vs. umass & charlotteAs part of St. Bonaventure’s 99-94 win over Massachusetts on Feb. 20 &
subsequent 104-83 victory vs. Charlotte on March 2, the Bonnies set several program records and posted national statistics rarely seen recently.
^ St. Bonaventure was 32-33 (97 percent) from the free-throw line against UMass. The last time a team had a better free-throw percentage while making at least 32 free throws was in January 2006, when Bowling Green went 34-35 (97.1 percent) from the stripe ... until Oklahoma beat that by going 34-34 on Saturday.
^ Eric Mosley scored 39 points and was 10-10 from the free-throw line against UMass. He joined Corey Hawkins of UC Davis as the only players to score at least 39 points and be perfect from the free-throw line in a Division I game this season (min. 10 FTA).
^ Against UMass, it marked the first time ever that St. Bonaventure has won an A-10 game when surrendering at least 94 points in regulation.
^ The 104 Bona points versus Charlotte are tied for the most in program history against a current A-10 member (UMass in 1981).
^ In the UMass game, the two teams combined for 124 second-half points (63-61); more than 19 TOTAL D-I games from Feb. 20 (19 of 57 – 33 percent).

a-10 leGenDs: earl BelcherThe Atlantic 10 Conference announced this year its Inaugural Men’s Basketball Legends, and Earl Belcher, ’81, has been chosen to represent St. Bonaventure. The 2013 class includes 16 former men’s basketball student-athletes and coaches who made an immeasurable impact on each A-10 institution and its basketball program.
Belcher led St. Bonaventure to 70 wins and appearances in both the NCAA Tournament and NIT during his four-year career. He led the team in scoring three straight years from 1978-79 to 1980-81, averaging no fewer than 21.5 points per game in each of those seasons. In 1980 and 1981 he earned All-Conference First Team accolades, becoming one of just three Bonnies to earn All-Conference First Team twice in a career. He was named the A-10 Player of the Year in 1981 after averaging 24.5 points and 7.2 rebounds per game and was the only Bonaventure player to have won the award until Andrew Nicholson in 2012.
The Syracuse, N.Y. native is one of just five players in SBU history with 2,000 or more points, and his 2,077 points ranks third all-time. His 19.9 points per game average is tied for sixth in school history, and his 83.1 career free-throw percentage good for fourth in Bona’s history. Additionally, he is one of 23 players who have reached 1,000 career points and 500 career rebounds while wearing the Brown and White.
The Men’s Basketball Legends will be honored on March 16 at Barclays Center in Brooklyn, N.Y. prior to the 2013 Men’s Basketball Championship semifinals. Each honoree – who was nominated by his respective institution – will be saluted during a celebration awards brunch beginning at 11 a.m. prior to the A-10 men’s semifinal games.
mosley on a ramPaGeSenior Eric Mosley was named the Atlantic 10 Player of the Week last week for the first time in his career by league officials. Mosley scored 39 points on Feb. 20 against Massachusetts, representing the most points ever by a Bonaventure player in an A-10 game.
The 39 point-performance – which efficiently came on 12-18 shooting, 5-8 from 3-point range and 10-10 from the free-throw line – is tied for the most points by an A-10 player in a game this year. Additionally, no Bonaventure player has scored more points in a regulation 40-minute game since Greg Sanders tallied 46 against Detroit in 1977.
The Louisville, Ky. native has been scorching over the last six games, averaging 24.0 points per game and shooting 49.5 percent (45-91) from the floor, including a 48-percent clip from 3-point range (24-50). During that six-game stretch, Mosley has jumped from 98th on St. Bonaventure’s all-time scoring list to 77th. He’s also increased his scoring average from 10.0 before the stretch to its current 13.1 average.
Plus / minus ProFiciency Player: When Chris Johnson is on the floor, SBU is outscoring its opponents by a +61 margin, coming out to an average of +2.26 points per game -- the best among all St. Bonaventure players. Senior Eric Mosley is second at +1.96, followed by Demitrius Conger (+1.48) and Matthew Wright (+1.33).
lineuP: Prorated out to a 40-minute game, the lineup of Jordan Gathers, Johnson, Wright, Youssou Ndoye and Mosley has been the most efficient. Those five are +37 on the year in just 96 minutes of action, which comes out to a +15.35 average over 40 minutes, compared with +5.73 for the most common starting lineup, which features Marquise Simmons and Charlon Kloof instead of Ndoye and Mosley.
Past years: Despite what many may assume, Andrew Nicholson did not lead St. Bonaventure in plus/minus last year. That honor goes to Conger, who averaged a +6.2 margin compared with Nicholson’s +5.9.
lonG ranGe strenGths & WeaKnessesSt. Bonaventure enters Wednesday’s game as the A-10’s third-best 3-point shooting team, connecting at a 37.6-percent clip from long range. The Bonnies also boast the league’s best 3-point shooter and nation’s seventh-best in Eric Mosley (45.1 percent). Additionally, Matthew Wright – who who missed two games last month with a torn plantar fascia in his left foot – is connecting at a 45.5-percent rate from 3-point range in his 12 A-10 games (15-33), including a two-game stretch in which he went 8-10.
In their 14 wins, the Bonnies are shooting 41.1 percent from 3-point range (109-265). However, in their 13 losses, the Bonnies are shooting 33.9 percent from 3-point range (85-251). In two of those 14 victories, SBU shot poorly from deep (2-14 at Cornell; 2-20 vs. Siena), but still claimed wins. In its 12 other wins, Bonaventure has shot a lethal 45.5 percent (105-231) from the 3-point arc.
GoinG GolDFor just the fourth time this year, St. Bonaventure donned its alternate gold jerseys on Feb. 23 at Duquesne, and it was the first time this year it wore them away from the Reilly Center. SBU is now 2-2 when wearing the gold uniforms this season, with the losses coming against Saint Louis and Iona, and the victories coming over Siena and Duquesne. SBU has three jerseys for the 2012-13 season, with the other two being its home whites and road browns.
colD From 3St. Bonaventure made a season-low-tying two 3-pointers in its loss to Saint Louis on Jan. 26. The Bonnies went just 2-16 from 3-point range, but came into the game against the Billikens red-hot from 3, connecting on 21-38 attempts over the previous two games. On two other occasions SBU had been limited to just two makes from 3 during a game, but both of those (Cornell, Siena) were wins for the Brown and White.
too close For comFort out oF the GateBonaventure’s first three losses came by a combined 10 points as each was by four points or less (at Canisius, 72-69; at Ohio, 69-65; at Arkansas State, 73-70). Two of those losses (Ohio, Arkansas State) came in the closing seconds as each team hit a game-winning 25-foot 3-pointer in transition. In all, six of the Bonnies’ first eight games were decided by five points or less, and until their consecutive blowouts of Cleveland State and The Citadel, only one game (Siena, 58-43) had been decided by more than 10 points.
simmons GranteD 6th yearSt. Bonaventure forward Marquise Simmons has been granted a sixth year of eligibility by NCAA officials. Simmons, who was listed as a redshirt senior this year due to an extension waiver’s pending outcome, will be a redshirt senior next year for the 2013-14 season, his final year with the Bonnies. Under NCAA rules, a student-athlete has a five-year eligibility clock to complete four years of athletic competition. However, this can be extended due to circumstances beyond the student-athlete’s control.
he’s looKinG all WriGhtAfter struggling to just a 17.6-percent clip (6-34) from 3-point range during the non-conference schedule, Matthew Wright is 15-33 (45.5 percent) through his first 12 A-10 games, including 8-10 in two games against Temple and Saint Joseph’s. That trend is similar to what Wright did during his freshman campaign as he started his non-league docket by shooting just 3-28 (10.7 percent) from beyond the arc. However, he turned it around in A-10 action as he hit 42.5 percent of his 3-point attempts (23-54) during conference play. Wright’s 45.5 percent from 3 in conference action ranks 5th in the A-10 in league games only.
sPreaDinG the WealthEric Mosley’s 23 points and Matthew Wright’s 20 versus Charlotte on Saturday marked just the ninth and 10th times a St. Bonaventure player has scored 20 or more points in a game this season; however, it was the fifth time in a six-game stretch, and Mosley is responsible for many of those. Mosley netted 39 against UMass on Feb. 20, 30 at Richmond on Feb. 16 and 21 at Rhode Island on Feb. 9. Chris Johnson also scored 23 against UMass on Feb. 20. Demitrius Conger scored 21 against Saint Joseph’s on Jan. 23, Matthew Wright tallied 22 against Temple on Jan. 19 and Conger owns the other two 20-point performances (20 vs. Buffalo, 26 vs. Iona). Despite just 10 20-plus point individual performances this year, St. Bona still ranks as a top-60 offense nationally, averaging 73.1 points per game.
city oF Brotherly loveWith their back-to-back wins in Philadelphia in the middle of January, the Bonnies won two games in Philly on A-10 opponents’ home courts in the same season for just the second time in program history. The other came during the 1999-2000 season when they claimed victories over La Salle and Saint Joseph’s. That 1999-00 team went to the NCAA Tournament.

sizzlin’ home cooKin’Over the last 46 years – since 1967 when the Reilly Center hosted its first complete season – St. Bonaventure is a dominant 44-2 in home openers, 43-3 when including a win which was later forfeited during the 2002-03 season. SBU won its first 27 home openers in the RC until a 76-74 loss to Canisius on Dec. 3, 1994. Bona’s has won eight straight home openers, dating back to Nov. 23, 2004, when it suffered a 74-58 setback to Marist.
Even more impressive, in games which have served as both home and season openers, the Bonnies have NEVER lost in the Reilly Center, going an emphatic 33-0 in such contests.
Overall, the Bonnies are 78-15 all-time in season-opening games and 81-12 in home openers. Under head coach Mark Schmidt, St. Bonaventure is 4-2 in season openers and 6-0 in home openers.
‘Gather’inG Game actionSophomore Jordan Gathers saw a drastic increase in both minutes played and subsequently production beginning midway through his freshman season in 2011-12. After playing just double-digit minutes in one of the first 14 games last year (74 minutes total) and scoring five points, the California native logged double-digit action in 16 of the final 17 contests (288 minutes total) and netted 49 points. That’s an average of 5.2 minutes per game and .3 points per game over the first 14 games of the season, and 16.9 minutes and 2.8 points encompassing the last 17 outings, including making starts in each of the last nine games of the campaign.

2011-12 in BrieFSt. Bonaventure won its first Atlantic 10 Championship in 2012 and advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2000 where it narrowly lost to 3rd-seeded ACC Champion Florida State in the Second Round, 66-63.
What’s Gone & What’s BacKThe Bonnies will look to replace 2012 A-10 Player of the Year, Associated Press Honorable Mention All-American and First Round NBA Draft pick Andrew Nicholson, who led St. Bonaventure in scoring (18.5) and rebounding (8.4). SBU also lost Da’Quan Cook (7.6 points / 4.6 rebounds) to graduation. While Nicholson has moved on to the Orlando Magic, Cook has taken his game oversees where he signed a professional contract with BC Yambol in Bulgaria’s National Basketball League.
Bona returns 10 letterwinners and three starters, including 2012 A-10 All-Championship Team member Demitrius Conger, who averaged 12.1 points and 6.2 rebounds – both second on the team to Nicholson. Conger has been named to the 2012-13 Preseason All-Big 4 First Team. Bonaventure had 10 players average at least 10 minutes per game in 2011-12, tied for the most by any team in the A-10. Mark Schmidt was named the Sporting News Atlantic 10 Coach of the Year, and also claimed the Basketball Coaches Association of New York Men’s Division I Coach of the Year.
Five-year resurGence By going 10-6 and finishing tied for 3rd in the A-10 in 2012, St. Bonaventure increased its conference win total and bettered its league finish for the fifth straight year since head coach Mark Schmidt took over the Bonnies in 2007-08. Additionally, St. Bonaventure is one of only seven Division I schools in the nation to have improved its RPI in each of the last five seasons.
Charl eston Southern, Detroit, Long Beach State, South Dakota St ate, Tennessee Te c h and Wichita State are the other six schools which have improved their RPI each of the last five years. Of the seven teams, SBU is the only one to hail from a conference that has been rated among the top-10 in the country in RPI in each of the last five years.
amonG the BestSBU finished in the top-5 in the A-10 in nine different statistical categories in 2011-12, and closed the season at 16th in the nation in free-throw percentage (76.1) and 25th in the country in rebounding margin (+5.5).
Battle testeD early onThe Bonnies had a streak of five straight games decided by five points or less snapped earlier this year against Siena. By having five of their first six games decided by five points or less, it marked the first time in history that a season began by having five of its first six games decided by five points or less. It also marked just the third time in the 93-year history of the program that five consecutive games – at any point of the season – have been decided by five points or less. Bonaventure has never had a stretch of six straight games decided by five points or less.

St. Bonaventure’s slogan for the 2012-13 basketball season is “No Sleep ’Til Brooklyn.” The slogan, derived from the 1986 hit single by the Beastie Boys, was submitted by Patrick Didas, father of SBU freshman Cody Didas. It encapsulates the tireless effort needed to be put forth by the men’s bas-ketball team and its fans to reach the 2013 Atlantic 10 Championship at the brand new, $1 billion Barclays Center in Brooklyn.
The top 12 teams in the newly-formed 16-team A-10 advance to the A-10 Championship, which will be held entirely at the Barclays Center.
This marks the second year in a row that fans have had the opportunity to select the basketball slo-gan. Last season’s extremely popular “Defining Our Legacy” slogan came to fruition as Bonaventure won its first A-10 Championship title.

Potential milestonesDemitrius Conger became the 39th player in school history to net 1,000 points for his career during the Bonnies’ loss to VCU on Jan. 12. Teammate Michael Davenport is 192 points shy of 1,000, but he will fall short of reaching the milestone over SBU’s remaining two regular-season contests and potential postseason matchups. The last time Bonnies’ teammates reached 1,000 career points in the same season was in 2002-03, when junior Marques Green and senior Patricio Prato hit the milestone in back-to-back games against Duquesne (Jan. 25, 2003) and Cleveland State (Jan. 28, 2003), respectively.
Conger reached 500 career rebounds in a game earlier this year against Cleveland State and currently has 633, while Davenport once again will fall short of reaching 500 career rebounds. Davenport needs 117 to get to 500. With his 13 rebounds against Charlotte on March 2, Conger joined the list of top-20 rebounders in program history with his current total of 633.
Twenty-three St. Bonaventure players have recorded both 1,000 points and 500 rebounds during their careers. The last SBU player, besides Conger, to reach both career milestones was 2012 graduate Andrew Nicholson.

non-conFerence DocKetSt. Bonaventure’s non-conference schedule featured contests against six teams which went to post-season tournaments last year, including four versus NCAA Tournament squads. Six of the 13 teams won 20 or more games last year, and two advanced to the Sweet 16. Bonaventure concluded its non-conference docket with three straight games against 2012 NCAA Tournament teams. On the year, SBU went 2-4 against those postseason teams, losing to Ohio, 69-65, defeating Buffalo, 82-79, blowing out Cleveland State, 87-53 and falling to NC State, 92-73, Iona, 93-74, and Colorado State, 85-64.
The Atlantic 10 Conference has secured eight-year partnerships with ESPN, CBS Sports Network and NBC Sports Group for its media and television rights. The agreements more than double the men’s and women’s basketball national exposure for the A-10 membership and will begin in 2013-14.
The new agreements will give the league unprecedented reach, distribution and marketing, allowing the Atlantic 10 to better serve its fans in its extensive media footprint and to leverage the promotional platforms and marketing assets of these three major national media companies. The A-10 is in seven of the top 25 media markets, including four of the top 10. Beginning in 2013-14, all 14 conference members will be in the top 65 media markets in the country and the Atlantic 10.

cj’s hot startDuring the offseason, head coach Mark Schmidt called Chris Johnson the one player who would surprise opponents this year. Despite a cold streak at the end of the non-conference schedule – which he snapped with a 17-point performance at George Washington – that’s exactly what the senior has done as he tied his then-career high for scoring in four of the first eight games, netting 19 points against Cornell, Canisius, Niagara and Arkansas State. Through those first eight games, he scored 126 points – just 72 points shy of what he scored all of last year. Additionally, the Nova Scotia native has already tied, or broken, a career high in nine other categories (points: 22; rebounds: 7; assists: 7, steals: 4; field goals made: 8; 3-point field goals made: 3; field goals attempted: 17; 3-point field goals attempted: 6; minutes played: 38).
helPers, not GivinG it aWayOn the year, Jordan Gathers leads the Bonnies with a 2.18 assist-to-turnover ratio (48 assists, 22 turnovers), and Eric Mosley is second on the team at 1.41 (58 assists, 41 turnovers).
Finally a victory in rocFor the first time in seven tries, the Bonnies claimed a victory in Rochester when they defeated Niagara on Nov. 24, 80-75. SBU had lost those six games – against NC State, Virginia Tech, St. John’s, West Virginia, Syracuse and Saint Louis – by a combined 22 points, an average of 3.6 points per loss. The win in Blue Cross Arena was the first since a 79-78 decision over Charlotte in November of 2000.
Fresh PerFormanceFreshman Dion Wright came off the bench against Cornell on Nov. 14 and pulled down a team-high seven rebounds in just 16 minutes of action. The California product’s seven boards are the most by a Bonaventure freshman in his first road game since Mike Gansey grabbed six against Cleveland State on Nov. 20, 2001. Furthermore, Wright became the first Bona freshman to lead the team in rebounding in his first road game since Vidal Massiah against Siena on Nov. 24, 1998, when he had eight caroms.

Banner eveninGPrior to its season-opening win over Bethune-Cookman on Nov. 9, St. Bonaventure unveiled its 2012 Atlantic 10 Championship and NCAA Tournament banners.
The A-10 Championship banner is adorned on the same wall as the 1970 Final Four, 1977 NIT Championship and 2012 women’s 14-0 perfect A-10 regular season banners. The Second Round NCAA Tournament banner hangs from the Reilly Center rafters next to SBU’s 2002 NIT banner.

tHE CUPBOARD ISN’t REALLY tHAt BAREDespite losing A-10 Player of the Year, Associated Press Honorable Mention and top-20 NBA Draft Pick Andrew Nicholson, St. Bonaventure’s cupboard is fuller than many believe. In fact, last year the Bonnies were only outscored by 17 total points (574-557) when Nicholson was on bench. By comparison, with Nicholson in the game, Bonaventure was +190 (1,697-1,507).

Notes For Players Related To Their Points Scored With Nicholson On The Bench
Additionally, despite Nicholson’s overwhelming presence in the low blocks, the Bonnies were still able to produce points in the paint when he was not in the game. As a team, the Bonnies scored 944 total points in the paint last year. With Nicholson on the floor, that number was 728. Without him on the floor, that number was 216. In looking at the amount of minutes Nicholson played compared with point-in-the-paint produc-tion, there was an extremely minimal dropoff when he was on the bench. With Nicholson on the floor, the Bonnies averaged .75 points in the paint per minute. With Nicholson on the bench, Bonaventure averaged .65 points in the paint per minute.
Perhaps even more stunning is that the Bonnies were actually more efficient rebounding the ball when Nicholson was on the bench. Nicholson finished second in the A-10 at 8.4 rebounds per game, and Bonaventure as a team led the conference and ranked 25th in the nation in rebound-ing margin at +5.5. With Nicholson on the floor, the Bonnies averaged .86 rebounds per minute. With Nicholson on the bench, SBU averaged .94 rebounds per minute.

The Atlantic 10 made a big splash in the conference realignment craze in 2011-12, adding Butler and VCU to bring the league’s total number to 16. The moves led prominent media members, like Andy Katz of ESPN.com to declare the A-10 the “Winners of Conference Realignment.”
Both programs made the jump to the A-10 immediately, thereby fortifying the league’s position as the best basketball-driven conference in Division I. The only non big six conference to have 41 at-large NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament selections in the past 20 years, including three in 2012, the A-10 has boasted 62 postseason appearances in the last decade. For the fi fth year in a row, the Atlantic 10 Conference earned at least three bids and multiple at-large bids into the NCAA Tournament. Over the last six years, the Atlantic 10 has had 12 at-large selections - the seventh most among all other Division I conferences. A record eight A-10 institutions received invitations to the 2012 NCAA and NIT postseason tournaments, more than all but two conferences.
The Butler announcement came on May 2. An NCAA Final Four participant in two of the last three years, Butler is the seventh A-10 program with at least one appearance in the Final Four. The Bulldogs have been to the NCAA Tournament in fi ve of the past six years and have advanced past the fi rst weekend in three of those years. In all, Butler has 11 trips to the NCAA Tournament, and in fi ve of those the Bulldogs have advanced to the Sweet 16 or beyond. Eight of those 11 trips have come since 2000. The Bulldogs have seven straight 20-win seasons and have had a winning season in 18 of the last 19 years.
VCU went to the Final Four in 2011. Along with the recent addition of Butler University, it brings the total A-10 programs with at least one appearance in the Final Four to eight. VCU has made 11 total trips to the NCAA Tournament with four of those coming in the last six years. In seven of those 11 trips, the Rams have won at least one game, including their run to the 2011 Final Four. VCU has had eight postseason appearances since 2000.
In addition, the moves solidify the A-10 standing in prime media markets, strengthening the league’s hold on the Richmond market and adding the Indianapolis market. In all, the A-10 is in seven of the top 25 media markets, including four of the top 10. All 16 conference members are in the top 65 media markets in the country. The Atlantic 10 media footprint reaches over 23 million households.

The Atlantic 10 Confernece ranked seventh among all conference in the fi nal RPI in 2011-12. The league boasted eight Top 100 teams, third among all leagues behind only the Big East and the Big 10. The eight teams equaled the SEC and was more than the ACC, the Big 12, the PAC-12 and the Mountain West. In addition, the league had Temple, and St. Bonaventure receiving poll votes at the end of the year. Temple, which was ranked at 21 in the AP Poll and 24th in the Coaches’ Poll in the fi nal week of the regular season, fi nished in the recieving votes category. St. Bonaventure joined that category after its A-10 title run. Xavier was ranked as high as eighth and Saint Louis cracked the top 25 early in 2011-12. Saint Louis, Dayton and Saint Joseph’s all received votes early in the season as well. Newcomer VCU was also among those teams receiving votes in both polls last season.

The Atlantic 10 Conference announced in September of 2011 that it had formed a fi ve-year partnership with the Barclays Center to bring the A-10 men’s basketball tournament to Brooklyn and the new arena, beginning in 2013. The joint announcement was made at the Barclays Center Showroom in Manhattan, N.Y.
It will mark the fi rst time the A-10 Championship, which sends its champion to the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament, will be held in metropolitan New York City and the fi rst time it will be played in a state-of-the-art new facility.
“The opportunity to partner with the Barclays Center and bring the Atlantic 10 Basketball Championship to New York has unlimited possibilities. Our teams will compete in the newest, state-of-the-art facility within the Atlantic 10 footprint and the number-one media market in the country,” stated Commissioner Bernadette V. McGlade.
Scheduled to open in September, the Barclays Center will be a state-of-the-art sports and entertainment venue and the future home of the NBA’s Brooklyn Nets. The Barclays Center will off er approximately 18,200 seats for basketball and will have one of the most intimate seating confi gurations ever designed into a modern multi-purpose arena. The last time the Atlantic 10 Tournament was in an NBA building was in 2002 at the Spectrum in Philadelphia.
“We are thrilled for the Barclays Center to play host to one of men’s basketball’s most prestigious conference tournaments,” Barclays Center CEO Brett Yormark said. “We appreciate our alliance with the Atlantic 10 as we position the Barclays Center as a signifi cant national collegiate sports venue.”
The highest concentration of Atlantic 10 alumni of any region in the county live and work in the New York metro area. There are 2.5 million people total in Brooklyn and 8.1 million total people in New York, an opportunity for the A-10’s premier event to be played on the biggest stage in the nation.
“Brooklyn and the surrounding metropolitan New York area is home to over 100,000 Atlantic 10 alumni; this combined with the eight-million plus population will give the Atlantic 10 an opportunity to grow the Championship to new heights,” said McGlade.
The move also places the championship into the largest media market in the nation and home to CBS Sports, the Atlantic 10’s television partner for the men’s basketball championship. CBS Sports carries several regular season A-10 games and the league’s championship title game is aired on CBS as part of the network’s Selection Sunday package.
The Atlantic 10 is one of the most successful and well-respected leagues for basketball. The A-10 has averaged more than three teams per year in the top 50 of the RPI, equal to the Southeastern Conference. For the last four years, the Atlantic 10 earned three bids into the NCAA Tournament, one of only six Division I conferences to do so. Over the last six years, the league has had 10 at-large selections - the seventh most in Division I - behind only the big six BCS leagues.

Will have three years of playing eligibility beginning as a sophomore in the 2013-14 season. Not allowed to play in games during the •2012-13 season due to the NCAA’s “delayed enrollment” ruling. Since more than a year passed between Runs’ high school graduation date and his enrollment at St. Bonaventure, the NCAA mandates that he “sit the year in residency” before becoming eligible.Runs graduated from high school in the spring of 2010 and took a year off from schooling and basketball competition before enrolling at •Spain’s Canarias Basketball Academy (CBA) in the fall of 2011. The Netherlands native played in 22 games at CBA during the 2011-12 season. That competition – combined with the “delayed enrollment” – caused him to lose a year of eligibility.

19th coach in now the 93rd season of basketball at St. Bonaventure. •
Schmidt was recognized for his remarkable work in rebuilding the Bonnies by being named the •2012 Sporting News Atlantic 10 Coach of the Year. He was also named the Basketball Coaches Association of New York Men’s Division I Coach of the Year.
Schmidt was instrumental in the development of 2012 A-10 Player of the Year and AP Honorable •Mention All-American Andrew Nicholson, who ended his career ranked second in school history in scoring (2,103 points) and fourth in rebounds (887). Nicholson was selected by the Orlando Magic in the First Round of the 2012 NBA Draft with the 19th overall pick.
SBU’s 20 victories overall and 10 in the Atlantic 10 in 2011-12 were its most since the 1999-•2000 season, the last time a Bona team had earned an NCAA Tournament bid. The 10 victories also marked just the fourth time in history a Bonaventure team reached double-digit conference triumphs.
In May 2012, St. Bonaventure rewarded Schmidt with a five-year contract extension that runs •through the conclusion of the 2018-19 season.
Ahead of schedule with respect to his previous head coaching stint at Robert Morris. During his third •and fourth season at RMU, Schmidt posted back-to-back seasons with the same number of wins (14) before guiding the team to a record over .500 (15-14). He guided SBU to 15-win seasons in year two and three, before going over .500 in year four and eight games over in year five last season.
Has recruited and developed 10 players who were drafted into the NBA, including First-Round picks •James Posey (#18), David West (#18) and Nicholson.

In early February, Forbes Magazine named St. Bonaventure head coach Mark Schmidt the best college basketball coach in the nation for the money. Forbes tabulated the list based on how much a coach wins and loses as compared with the resources he has. The cost-per-win formula came out to $88,000/win for Schmidt over the past two years
based on overall budget – by far the lowest in the country, and the only coach who came in under $100,000.
