SPORTING KANSAS CITY vs CHICAGO FIRE LIVESTRONG SPORTING PARK, Kansas City, Kan.
September 28, 2012 (WEEK 30, MLS Game #284) 7:30 p.m. CT (NBC SN; TSN2) A mouthwatering clash for the top of the Eastern Conference is ahead before an NBC Sports Network audience on Friday night as two of the hottest teams in MLS meet when Sporting Kansas City play host to the Chicago Fire. Sporting lead the East by two points and could book their passage for the MLS Cup Playoffs with a win, now unbeaten in eight games after a scoreless draw at Montréal. The Fire have won four games on the trot to pull within striking distance of the East lead, after yet another come-from-behind win in a 2-1 defeat of Columbus last weekend. REFEREE: Chris Penso. The teams are meeting for the third time this season, and the Fire have won the first two. Goals by Sebastian Grazzini and Dominic Oduro gave Chicago a 2-1 win May 12 at Toyota Park, then Marco Pappa scored the game’s only goal in a Fire win at KC on June 29.
Kansas City hasn’t defeated Chicago at home since 2007. The Fire have won two of the six meetings since, with four draws. Last year’s meeting, a scoreless draw, was the grand opening of Livestrong Sporting Park.

The game's lone goal came after 58 minutes. On a swift counterattack, the Fire's Marco Pappa breaking down the middle, fed Chris Rolfe on the left, then slotted the return ball low between goalkeeper Jimmy Nielsen and Matt Besler and into the back of the net from the heart of the area.

SPORTING KANSAS CITY Sporting Kansas City concluded their two-game road swing by extending their long undefeated run, gaining a scoreless draw with the Montréal Impact on Saturday afternoon at Stade Saputo. Sporting are in first place in the Eastern Conference, with 55 points from 30 matches. LAST MATCH
Sporting goalkeeper Jimmy Nielsen was credited with three saves in comfortably picking up his league-leading 14th shutout, making a key stop in stoppage time from Matteo Ferrari’s powerful header off a Marco Di Vaio free kick.
Impact goalkeeper Troy Perkins made two saves on the rainy afternoon, not greatly troubled between the posts.
MLS GAME INFORMATION
Sporting head coach Peter Vermes made four changes to the team that knocked off the New York Red Bulls 2-0 at Red Bull Arena. Michael Harrington and Lawrence Olum came into the back four for Chance Myers and Aurelien Collin, and Oriol Rosell and Jacob Peterson came into the side for Paulo Nagamura and Roger Espinoza.
SPORTING KANSAS CITY (4-2-3-1): Jimmy Nielsen - Michael Harrington, Lawrence Olum, Matt Besler, Seth Sinovic - Julio Cesar (Paulo Nagamura 60), Oriol Rosell (Peterson Joseph 90) - Kei Kamara, Graham Zusi, Jacob Peterson (Chance Myers 83) - C.J. Sapong.
TEAM NEWS Sporting concluded their two-game Eastern swing with four points from two matches and are now unbeaten in
their last four games away from Kansas City. Sporting own the best road record in MLS this season at 8-4-3, percentage points ahead of San Jose (8-5-2).
“If you'd have told us that would be the case going into this trip, we'd have said, 'That'd be great,'” manager Peter Vermes said. “This was a huge result. We came to play, and for us to do that on such a quick turnaround, with (Montreal) having the week off, I'm very pleased with the point and the performance of all the guys.”
Sporting’s eight-game unbeaten run is their longest of the season, after winning seven consecutive games to start the year, and is tied for the longest in MLS this season (also: Houston, June 30-Aug. 3).
Sporting have allowed just four goals over their eight-game unbeaten streak, and have recorded four shutouts in the span.
“It was a big goal of ours going into the season, to make sure that we are defending well,” Vermes said. “I’m proud of the fact that we are really having a strong commitment to defense. Because to win, to be successful in this game, you have to have a good defense. Right now, the guys are committed to that, all the players, so far it’s been good.”
Jimmy Nielsen recorded his 13th shutout in the draw in Montréal, now two ahead of Houston goalkeeper Tally Hall for the MLS lead in the category. “It’s not a goal for me when I go on the field to get a shutout; it’s a bonus if it happens, Nielsen said. “We didn’t score today, so the best we could get out of this is a point. But for the last five days, we are pretty satisfied with four points.
With Sporting playing a second game on the road in four days, midfielder Oriol Rosell was given his first MLS start, playing a central midfield role. Rosell had made three previous appearances, the longest a 12-minute stint.
“I asked him to do something different, because I thought Naga was struggling a little bit,” manager Peter Vermes said. “So he did something that he wasn't normally used to. But I tell you what, he did a good job. He was good in the game. His instincts to move the ball were excellent, and he put himself in good positions to really help us at times.” Said midfielder Graham Zusi: “I thought he played well. He played smart, simple and he found his gaps pretty well.”
Jacob Peterson also returned to the starting lineup for the first time since July 28, after having come on as a substitute in each of the last two games. But Peterson will be suspended for the Chicago match after he was shown a red card while sitting on the bench after being substituted in the 83rd minute.
Having not made an appearance since Aug. 4, when he forced to leave after just seven minutes of the match vs. New England, Bobby Convey has returned to training. But Vermes did not set a timetable for his return to the lineup.
“I couldn't tell you right now,” Vermes said. “I don't want to all of a sudden say, 'Hey, get into a game.' That doesn't make sense either. I'd like to see him get more opportunity here as we go forward. It'd be great to get him into some of the games late in the season and then into the playoffs, to have him available at least.”
With a victory, or with a tie or even a loss and the right combination of results, Sporting will become the first Eastern Conference team to secure its place in the MLS Cup Playoffs.
“We're locking in to the end of the season, trying to make a strong run for the Supporters’ Shield,” midfielder Graham Zusi said. “These games, they're more of a battle than anything. We matched the intensity of Montreal, and I think we're really homing into these last few games.”
CHICAGO FIRE The Chicago Fire extended their winning to four games, coming back for a 2-1 win against the Columbus Crew on Saturday evening at Toyota Park. The Fire are in second place in the Eastern Conference with 53 points from 29 games. LAST MATCH
The Crew took the lead in the 15th minute. Goalkeeper Sean Johnson’s pass went directly to the feet of Columbus forward Jairo Arrieta, who dribbled past a diving Johnson and beat sliding defender Arne Friedrich for his sixth goal of the year.
But the Fire were level just eight minutes later. Forward Sherjill MacDonald found Chris Rolfe with a through-pass, and he buried a shot past goalkeeper Andy Gruenebaum from just inside the area.
Three minutes later, Rolfe settled a pass from Patrick Nyarko just outside the penalty area and calmly placed a curling shot out of Gruenebaum’s reach.
MLS GAME INFORMATION
Fire head coach Frank Klopas made no changes to the team that came back for a 3-1 win against the Montréal Impact at Toyota Park.
CHICAGO FIRE (4-2-3-1): Sean Johnson - Jalil Anibaba, Arne Friedrich, Austin Berry, Gonzalo Segares - Logan Pause, Alex (Wells Thompson 89) - Patrick Nyarko, Chris Rolfe (Dominic Oduro 84), Alvaro Fernandez - Sherjill MacDonald (Daniel Paladini 78).
TEAM NEWS The Fire have won four games in a row, their longest winning streak in seven years, matching the club’s
longest since winning 11 in a row in its inaugural campaign of 1998. “We made a mistake, we gave up the goal, but I gave so much credit to the team. You know, we never
panicked, we kept playing the same way and we scored two very nice goals,” said Fire head coach Frank Klopas. “We had some opportunities in the second half to put the game away and I think in the end it was a little bit difficult because as a tendency when you’re up we dropped a little bit off and then they played everything in the box. Lot of long balls, which is our strength.”
Heading into the All-Star break, the Fire were in fifth place in the Eastern Conference. Since then, they’ve lost just once in nine games, going 7-1-1 – and could take over the top spot in the division with a victory.
“We’re excited that there’s so much on the line with every game. I think that’s the exciting part. We didn’t have this in the past and I think the players are excited for sure,” Klopas said. “The pressure is how you deal with it and I think we’ve dealt well. We’ve prepared well and I think that’s what gives players confidence on the field which is very important.”
The Fire have scored 19 goals in their last eight games, hitting for multiple goals in each one. It’s by far the longest such streak in MLS this season (San Jose currently has a five-game streak alive).
“As the season draws to a close and you get to the playoffs, we’re not going to have like, eight, nine, 10 chances a game like we’ve been creating in the last several games,” Chris Rolfe said. “Tonight was an eye-opener that it’s going to be tougher toward the end of the season and in the playoffs. You don’t get as many chances, so you have to be good with the finishes.”
For a second consecutive game, the Fire came from behind to win after allowing the opening goal. They have won a remarkable seven games after conceding first; next in MLS is New York with five wins after allowing the opener.
“We seem to start out decent in a game then go down a goal and respond to that,” Rolfe said. "That’s something that we have to fix, but it’s still a good thing that we can come back from that.”
The Fire allowed a single goal for a fourth consecutive match, having gone since July 14 without posting a shutout.
“For me, the important thing is that we don’t give up goals,” said defender Arne Friedrich. “It was a little unlucky how we gave up the goal, but the most important thing is the character of the team. There were games this season that we went down a goal and we came back fantastic – same as today – and this is what counts.”
Rolfe scored his second two-goal game since his return to MLS in the Fire’s 2-1 come-from-behind win vs. Columbus. He has a goal or an assist in six of the last nine games, with seven goals and an assist in that time.
Patrick Nyarko collected his seventh assist on Rolfe’s opening goal, now the Fire leader in the category. “He’s done a great job for us this year; this time he came down the side pulling attention away from me and Sherjill [MacDonald] and he happened to find my feet. I took a good first touch and had a pretty good finish,” Rolfe said.
Pavel Pardo was forced to miss a second consecutive match with calf tightness, and was listed as questionable on the club’s injury report to start the week.
“I’m glad it’s now and not in the end. I will see every day how I feel, how the muscle progresses,” Pardo said. “Sometimes it’s like that, so many games, so many minutes I was playing during the season. But I’m OK. I feel better day-by-day.”

resUlTs | SportingKansasCity currently sits in first place of the EasternConference with a record of 16-7-7 (55 points). The team had a historic start to 2012, garnering seven straight wins to begin the season. However, Kansas City experienced a slight decrease in their momentum losing three games in a row before earning a draw against Western Conference foe Colorado Rapids at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park.
The momentum was back in Kansas City’s favor as the team won two Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup games against Orlando City SC and Colorado Rapids and added two MLS victories against the San Jose Earthquakes and Toronto FC. Sporting KC then went on the road and earned a tie at CenturyLink Field against Western Conference foe Seattle Sounders.
Sporting KC experienced a second short slump in MLS play, suffering a 4-0 defeat to the Philadelphia Union at PPL Park followed by a 1-0 loss to rival Chicago Fire at LIVEsTrong Sporting Park. However, in between the two MLS matches, Sporting Kansas City hosted the Dayton Dutch Lions in Open Cup competition, in which they earned a 3-0 victory to send them to the Lamar Hunt U.S.OpenCupsemi-finals.
Sporting Kansas City got back on track in MLS competition in July when they beat Montreal 3-1 at Saputo Stadium followed by 0-0 home draw with the Hous-ton Dynamo. Sporting KC then went on the road earning a 2-0 victory over the Columbus Crew moving them back up the standings and into sole possession offirstplaceamongEasternConferencerivalsbeforedroppinga2-1decisionagainstHoustonintheirfirstevermatchatBBVACompassStadium.
Sporting Kansas City returned back to LSP to face the New England Revolution in thefirst of four consecutivehomematches inall-competition.Thematchresulted in a scoreless draw. Sporting KC then fell to Montpellier Herault SC 3-0 intheirfirstoftwointernationalfriendliesbeforelosingtoEasternConferencefoe Columbus 2-1 despite outshooting the Crew 25-12.
Sporting Kansas City then went on to draw 1-1 with EPL side Stoke City FC with a late equalizer in second half stoppage time. After the friendly, Sporting KC earned the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup title after defeating the Seattle Sounders FC in a shootout at LIVEsTrong Sporting Park.
Sporting Kansas City next hosted D.C. United and earned a 2-1 victory at LSP followed by a 1-0 road win over Toronto FC at BMO Field. Upon arrival back to the States, Sporting Kansas City earned a 1-1 draw against the New York Red Bulls and a 2-1 victory over Toronto FC before salvaging a point with a second half stoppage time goal against the Houston Dynamo.
And most recently, Sporting KC beat the New York Red Bulls 2-0 at Red Bull Arena before earning one point in a scoreless draw at Saputo Stadium moving their undefeated streak to eight consecutive games in MLS competition.
laMar hUnT U.s. open CUp ChaMpions | Sporting Kansas City was crowned the LamarHuntU.S.OpenCupChampions for the first time since2004 after beating the Seattle Sounders FC at LIVEsTrong Sporting Park 3-2 in penalty kicks after a 1-1 draw in regulation.
Sporting KC took the lead on a Kei Kamara penalty kick in the 84th minute after a hand ball by Zach Scott. The goal marked Kamara’s second goal in U.S. Open Cup competition since joining Kansas City. Just two minutes later, Seattle’s Scott got a bit of redemption when he notched the equalizer off a free kick from Rosales.
Aftertwoovertimeperiodsthematchwasstilltiedandheadedtoabest-of-fiveshootout.SportingKC,shootingfirst,beganwithKamara’ssecondsuccessfulattempt of the night. The Sounders would match it with a make of their own through Brad Evans’ shot to his left.
Gspurning gave his team the advantage with a stop on Espinoza and Seattle momentarily led following Marc Burch’s blast down the middle. Besler pulled Sporting KC back level with a shot off the underside of the crossbar and into the back of the net.
Alonso and Zusi both sent their shots over the crossbar in back-to-back at-tempts, and Nielsen made a superb save to his left to deny Christian Tiffert to sendittothefifthandfinalpenaltykickwithitalltobedecided.
Nagamura’s initial attempt was saved by Gspurning, but he was ruled to have come off his line early and the Brazilian calmly converted the ensuing second chance to his left to put Sporting KC ahead in dramatic fashion.
Johnson walked to the spot with LIVEsTrong Sporting Park in a frenzy, need-ingtoscoretokeepSeattlealive.BackinKansasCityforthefirsttimesinceheplayed with the then-Wizards in 2007, Johnson’s shot sailed over the crossbar and brought an end to the shootout with Seattle’s third straight miss from the mark.
Prior to the shootout loss, the Sounders had won three straight U.S. Open Cups, and had not been bested in the competition since August 12, 2008, when they were still a United Soccer League franchise.

In the first leg of the series, Sebastian Grazzini equalized in the 61st minute and Dominic Oduro notched the game-winner in the 81st as the Fire rallied from a 1-0 deficit to top Sporting Kansas City at Toyota Park May 12. Marco Pappa notched the game’s only goal in the 58th minute and Sean Johnson stood up to a barrage of late chances as the Men in Red defeated Sporting Kansas City 1-0 at LIVESTRONG Sporting Park June 29. QUICK KICKS vs. Sporting Kansas City (16-7-7; 55 pts.) • The Fire hold a 23-10-9 record against Sporting Kansas City, including a 8-7-7 record in matches played on the road. • The Fire are unbeaten in the two matches that have been played at LIVESTRONG Sporting Park. The Men in Red held Sporting Kansas City to a scoreless draw in the stadium opener June 9, 2011. The Fire took home the full three points on June 29 after a 1-0 victory earlier this season. • Sporting Kansas City is 8-3-4 at LIVESTRONG Sporting Park this season. • The Fire defense has now held its opposition to one goal or less in eight of its last nine matches. • This is the first time the Men in Red have earned 16 victories in a season since 2001 when the team went 16-6-5 and reached the MLS Cup Semifinals. • Sporting Kansas City will be without the services of forward Jacob Peterson who received a red card against the Montreal Impact Sept. 22.
A LOOK AT THE FIRE The Chicago Fire (16-8-5, 53 pts.) enter their 15th season of MLS play after rebounding midseason to post a 9-9-16 record, which left the side three points outside of the playoffs in 2011. Locking up the likes of Pavel Pardo and Logan Pause this past offseason, the team returns the majority of its starting eleven to Toyota Park in 2012, while adding Uruguayan midfielder Alvaro Fernandez, Dutch striker Sherjill MacDonald and Brazilian midfielder Alex to support the Ghanaian tandem of Dominic Oduro and Patrick Nyarko. The team also reinforced their defensive corps in the offseason by adding German World Cup veteran Arne Friedrich as well as two young defenders via the MLS SuperDraft in center back Austin Berry and left back Hunter Jumper who will be expected to provide cover for the likes of Cory Gibbs, Jalil Anibaba, Gonzalo Segares and Dan Gargan in 2012. CHICAGO FIRE BURN COLUMBUS CREW 2-1 IN COMEBACK VICTORY For the eighth time this season, the Chicago Fire came back from being down a goal, using two Chris Rolfe goals in the span of three minutes to down the Columbus Crew Saturday night at Toyota Park. The Fire would come close in the third minute when Alex’s corner from the left was punched high by Crew ‘keeper Andy Gruenebaum. Fire midfielder Alvaro Fernandez headed it back in from the top of the penalty area before Arne Friedrich laid the ball back off for Alex. The Brazilian attacker dribbled towards the box and whipped in a swerving ball that skimmed off the top of the cross bar and out for a goal kick. Columbus would threaten seven minutes later when Milovan Mirosevic played a quick combination through midfield for Eddie Gaven. The veteran Crew midfielder rewarded Mirosevic’s run before the Chilean international blasted a first time effort that Johnson turned away with a diving stop in the 10th minute. The Crew would eventually draw first blood by taking advantage of a mistake in the back. Fire center back Austin Berry played a seemingly harmless ball back to Johnson and the Fire ‘keeper looked to return the pass back but miss-hit his effort into the path of lurking Crew striker Jairo Arrieta. The Costa Rican international dribbled around Johnson before placing his effort beyond a desperate sliding attempt from Friedrich to give the Crew a 1-0 lead in the 15th minute. The Fire only took eight minutes to equalize when Gonzalo Segares played a long ball up the left for forward Sherjill MacDonald. The Dutch striker turned his marker before playing a perfect ball into space for Chris Rolfe who tucked his left-footed effort past Gruenebaum and inside the left post to take the score to 1-1 in the 23rd minute. Rolfe would secure his second brace of the season just three minutes later. Receiving a pass from Logan Pause through the midfield, Rolfe laid off for Patrick Nyarko who powered up the right. The Ghanaian international strolled through three defenders and cut inside to the center of the box before squaring the ball for Rolfe. The veteran striker took one touch with his left foot before driving a right footed effort past a frozen Gruenebaum and into the top right corner to give the Fire a 2-1 lead in the 26th minute. The wonderfully taken goal was Rolfe’s eighth of the 2012 campaign. The Crew looked to equalize in the 44th minute when Federico Higuain’s corner from the right picked out the head of Chad Marshall at the near post but the Columbus captain’s nodded effort was easily saved by Johnson, taking the Fire into the half with a 2-1 advantage. Coming out of the break, the Fire looked for an elusive third goal and nearly saw Chris Rolfe tally his second career hat trick. Alex’s free kick on the left picked out Rolfe at the top of the area before the two-goal scorer hit a first-time volley towards the back post that went just wide in the 51st minute. Columbus would come close twice inside two minutes. First when Gaven found room on the left and held up at the top of the area before lofting an attempt that Johnson punched away. Renteria picked up the loose ball and dribbled towards the end line before seeing his cross turned out for a corner by Austin Berry in the 56th minute. On the ensuing corner, Higuain’s drive from the right found Marshall who glanced a header towards the back post and into the run of Eddie Gaven but the Crew winger popped his streaking effort well over the bar in the 56th minute. The third goal would continue to escape the Fire in the 62nd minute when a great combination between Rolfe and MacDonald saw the Dutch forward into the box on the left. MacDonald quickly chipped over the onrushing Grunebaum for an open Alvaro Fernandez but the Uruguayan winger sent his first-time header just over the goal. With their backs against the wall, the Crew would pour on the pressure through the end of the match. In the 76th minute, Miranda found space on the right and crossed looking for Arrieta but the ball was too heavy and fell for Higuain who made a deep run before heading the ball over Johnson’s goal. Higuain would produce the danger again in the 79th minute when his free kick from the left was headed up by Crew center back Julius James. The ball would fall on the right for Josh Williams who smashed a first-time effort at goal, forcing Johnson to make a spectacular reaction stop. Columbus would have one more furious effort seven minutes later. James penetrated up the right before seeing his cross deflected by Berry into the path of Marshall. The veteran center back’s quick shot deflected through traffic before Berry cleared. Higuain would pick up the loose ball and send a quick cross back into the area for Marshall, who nodded back before Friedrich cleared out of the box. Tchani would follow up with one more attempt but second half substitute Daniel Paladini would come through with a block to close out a 2-1 Fire victory.
