Objective
Predict about corrosion and corrosion rate in boiler
To check and control the quality parameters of
water
Take required step(s) to prevent corrosion
Boiler water: Sample categories
HP Steam
LP Steam
HP Drum
LP Drum
HP Economizer/Feed
LP Economizer/Feed
CEP
CCCW
N.B. HRSG 1 & 2 both have individual sample categories except CEP & CCCW
Boiler water: Sample collection
Before sample collection, open the sample
discharging tab fully at least 5 min
Boiler water: Sample collection cont’d
Clean the collection bottle with the sample properly
and collect about 500 ml sample
Boiler water: Quality parameters
pH
Conductivity
Silica
Phosphate
Iron
Sodium
Dissolve Oxygen (DO)
Nitrite
Turbidity
Quality measurement: pH & conductivity
Wash the plastic beaker with the sample properly
Take 100 ml sample in it
Rinse the pH & conductivity sensor by sample
Immerse the sensor in sample
Start the meters and then press the
measurement button
Quality measurement: pH & conductivity cont’d
Take the values when the reading is stable
Quality measurement: pH & conductivity cont’d
Cautions: Use the sensor carefully aloof from all
possibilities of damaging chances.
Place the meter in suitable position so that it
cannot fall down
Cover the sensor with the provided cap after
using
Quality measurement: Silica
After measuring pH & cond. use these samples
for silica test.
Color the sample by using reagents following
sample coloring procedure.
Do Baseline Calibration of the silica meter for
each sample by using DM water
Quality measurement: Silica cont’d
Cautions: Use safety equipment properly.
Use separate pipette for each coloring reagent
Do baseline calibration for each sample
Quality measurement: Sodium
Take 100 ml sample in the plastic beaker
Add 3-4 drop reagent in it
Rinse the sensor probe with sample
Immerge the probe in the sample and wait
When value is stable in pNa mood change the mood
to Na+ mood by rotating the SELECT knob.
Quality measurement: Silica cont’d
Cautions: Only use select knob
The sensor must be above 20 mm from the bottom
Quality measurement: Iron
Quality measurement: Iron cont’d
Quality measurement: Iron cont’d
Cautions: Use safety equipment properly.
Heat up & cool down the beaker slowly
Take burette & pipette reading carefully
Add ammonia drop wise and stop exactly at the end
point when congo red changes it color
Don’t be hurry when handling the cuvette in the meter
Be careful in setting the wavelength
Quality measurement: Phosphate
Quality measurement: Phosphate cont’d
Cautions: Use safety equipment properly.
Take pipette reading carefully
Don’t be hurry when handling the cuvette in the
meter
Be careful in setting the wavelength
Wait for 2 min’s for proper coloration
Quality measurement: Nitrite
Take 2 ml sample in the vial by pipette
Add 1 drop 1st reagent and shake it
Add drop wise 2nd reagent and shake it until color
change to pale greenish
Count the number of drop of the 2nd reagent and
multiply it by 50 which gives the nitrite conc. in ppm.
Quality measurement: Nitrite cont’d
Cautions: Take pipette reading carefully
Drop the reagent carefully
Quality measurement: DO
Connect the meter’s water inlet flow line to the
sample discharge flow channel
Push the On/Off button and wait
When the will be stable then take the readings
Quality measurement: DO cont’d
Cautions: Connect inlet line tightly with flow channel so that
no air can add into the inlet water
Charge the meter when it shows Low battery
Quality measurement: Turbidity
Quality measurement: Turbidity cont’d
Cautions: Take sample in the vial up to the mark carefully.
Place the vial carefully in meter
Be careful about falling down the meter and vial.
Attention for all chemical lab users
Must read carefully and follow all the instruction,
labels, tags before using anything.
Never use any equipment or chemicals without
knowing about this for your safety as well as
equipment and chemicals also.
Last but not least, always rearrange all equipment and
chemicals as before which you have used in the
laboratory.
If you have any question(s), then feel free to ask
