In the age of internet and technology, the communication aspect of our every day life has changed. While there have been many arguments indicated that the Face to Face communication (FtF) might have been ceased, the Computer Mediated Communication (CMC) has certainly expanded across the globe. Moreover, CMC users have also contributed by adding elements to some certain aspects such as emotional representations and shorten form of dialogue. That would lead to the increasing usage of Emoticon and Internet Slang. They have generated a great impact on human way of communication. Many experts

have argued that the popularity of Emoticon and Internet Slang might be the reason why face to face interaction has been deteriorated. In a way, it could be argued that some aspect of human might become “digitalised”. The project is used to explore the impact of Emoticon, Internet Slang and some other relative new elements of online communication on interaction between human. In addition, some of the outcomes would introduce an alternative conceptual scenario in the near future.

It’s very hard to imagine a life without facial expression. Emotion is a factor which make human superior to other pieces. Do you find it easier to express yourself online ? Has human emotion become digitalised ?

Emoticon,Intertnet Slang Online Identitties

To determine the role of Emoticon, Internet Slangs, Online Identities in Digital Culture , as well as their impacts on the interaction between human, I’ve carried out numerous research method. Firstly, I’ve completed quite a few contextual researches through a number of academic publications and online articles. There are many arguments with different opinions regarding the role of Emoticons and Internet Slang, as well as others relative new elements in CMC environment. However, most of them agree that these elements do have a significant influence in the communication aspect, whether it’s positive or negative, which I shall not conclude here. On the

other hand, I’ve also used online survey as a method to collect samples of people’s opinions. There have been a certain amount of discoveries when I study the answers such as people use Emoticon on Twitter more than Facebook or some people use Emoticon because they believe it’s a trend. More importantly, 60% of the answers pointed out that they don’t express emotion in real life that much in comparison to their usage of emoticon online. To clarify the result, I’ve also interviewed some people about the matter. The result are similar. Although I shall not come to the conclusion that people prefer to use emoticon rather than real life expression, I believe

that there would be a large number of people who would find themselves in a similar situation as the interviewees. In addition to the survey, I’ve done other online experiment regarding the online identities. I downloaded many profile pictures of people from my friend list ( with their consent ) . Accordingly, I ask them about what they felt at that time when the picture is taken. The experiment is carried out to explore what the profile picture could possibly represent. With the help of Gephi and R (real time data collecting software), I managed to collect the number of tweets and retweets which contain emoticons and internet slangs in real time.

With the expedition of internet and the rapid development of communication technology, there has been a major shift in people’s way of communication. Since the Computer Mediated Communication (CMC) environment has gained more and more popularity over the year, the CMC users tends to find solutions which would enhance their way of correspondence online. That would be the explanation for the increased usage of emoticon and internet slang and arguably, the decline of Face to Face interaction. Is it true that people express their emotion online more often than in real life ? The project would

investigate the matter through different methods of research to explore the concept of Emotion’s Digitalisation. With the necessary data and information, I would create a serie of visual artefacts to demonstrate and represent the intention of my project. Moreover, I would also introduce a visionary conceptual scenario where human would rely solely on technology to express their emotions. The alternative scenario would be presented as a piece of motion graphic.

PROPOS LBy exploring this project, I’ve a deeper understanding of Digital Culture and New Media through various references and resources. I also manage to enhance graphic design skill by presenting my researches and experiments in form of books and zines. Although the conclusion wouldn’t be conclusive since it’s an ongoing matter and require further studies, I do have a deeper insight look of the Internet culture. The role of Emoticons, Internet Slangs, Online Identities is continuosly changing. They play a significant role in online communication. However, It should be noticed that although they’ve caused

a great impact, they’re merely communication methods. As a matter of fact, what should be concerned is the direction in which the technology ( the internet in particular ) is leading us. It’s also worth to point out that the main factor is ourselves.

Moreover, this is also a good exercise to locate my future interest in the practice field of New Media design. By investigating and exploring this unit, I have a first hand design experience of industry practice.

How does the emerging technology affect human’s way of communicating? Is there a possibility where we will all turn into a real-time emotionless being falling deep and got stuck in the online world?
