MICHELLE CARR & MARK WHITFIELD CD RELEASE

SEPTEMBER 2, 8PM & 10:30PM

Sometimes people just click. Throw in some heightened creativity and perfect timing, and you get Michelle Carr and Mark Whitfield’s new album, Mutual Modulations, a new take on jazz and blues, with thoughtful lyrics and a com-plex yet accessible sound.

The two had known each other for 15 years and were performing together at the Blue Note when the vision for a collaborative album struck. They’d re-corded before, with Whitfield playing guitar on Carr’s debut album, Change, but they’d never written songs togeth-er, and it seemed like the right time. The two sat down to begin writing in mid-August 2012, not knowing what to expect—within minutes, they had the track, “The Game,” started. Just three months later, they finished the album.

He studied jazz at Berklee; she was classically trained at Juilliard. His in-strument is the guitar; her’s is her voice. He plays a hundred shows a year with his hard bop quartet, Wh-ifield Extended; her frequent appear-ances showcase a wide range of vo-cals complemented by her extensive background in theater. But it was their commonalities more than their differ-ences that shown through during the

song-writing process. They’re both educators with a passion for sharing their talents. They’re both humble and open minded. And they both stepped out of their comfort zones to achieve a new sound.

Carr asked Whitfield to set aside his electric guitar and play his nylon-string acoustic. In turn, she abandoned her intricate harmonies in favor of a voice laid bare. Both were challenged by the feeling of being exposed, but the risk helped them plumb an extraordinary emotional depth and create soulful, honest songs that are accessible to a wide variety of listeners—a sound the two call “sophisticated blues.”

Combining the richness of jazz, the melodies of classical music, and the raw emotion of the blues resulted in songs like “The End of My Parade,” in which the desperation of the singer is palpable—and painfully real. This isn’t an album of catchy pop tunes or cotton candy love songs. Each piece was writ-ten to capture elements of the human condition as diverse as suffering the depths of depression, musing on the afterlife, and striving to achieve one’s dreams. n

Gadi Lehavi is an example of pure gift and amazing talent. At the age of 11, he was accepted as a student at the Rimon School of Jazz and Contempo-rary Music. A visit to the United States when he was 13 years old opened a door to the world and provided him with an opportunity to play alongside senior musicians such as Ravi Coltrane and Chick Corea. Since then, Le-havi has performed and collaborated with Bobby McFerrin, Dave Liebman, and Kurt Rosenwinkel, among others. Sometimes age is just a number.

Lehavi was born in Tel-Aviv, Israel, in 1996. A few weeks before his ninth birthday, he be-gan to take regular les-sons in classical music and theory with Dr. Mi-chal Tal – a renowned classical pianist and a Juilliard graduate. A year after, Lehavi also began taking jazz lessons with Rami Levin, the head of the piano department at Rimon. Fol-lowing a jazz workshop in Eilat in 2008, Lehavi was invited to perform at the Red Sea Jazz Festival. In 2009, after attending a five-week program at the Berklee College of Music, his mother brought him to New York City, where he had the chance to showcase his skills in some of the city’s renowned jazz clubs. He immediately caught the attention of famous musicians like Ravi Coltrane and Dave Liebman, and a YouTube video of his solo performance at Smoke amassed over 10,000 views in just a few weeks.

FM&P Jazz is proud to have provided Lehavi his first opportunities to present regular concerts in traditional jazz fes-tivals in Europe, including April Jazz, Jazzkaar, the Kaunas Jazz Festival, and the Kaliningrad City Jazz Festi-

val. The feedback the young pianist received from press, audience, and critics following these performances was simply awesome, as they lauded his boundless improvisational and cre-ative capacity. 2012 saw Lehavi take his trio to Brazil for the first time with a series of concerts with special guest Ravi Coltrane. The pianist also em-barked on his first South Pacific tour in November 2012. n

Cassandra Wilson is a jazz musician, vocalist, songwriter, and producer from Jackson, Mississippi. Described by critic Gary Giddins as “a singer blessed with an unmistakable timbre and attack who has expanded the play-ing field” by incorporating blues, coun-try and folk music into her work. She began playing piano at six, guitar at the age of twelve and was working as a vo-calist by the mid-’70s, singing a wide variety of material. After moving to New York City in the early 80’s, Cassandra met saxophonist Steve Coleman and became one of the founding members of the M-Base Collective. She signed with Blue Note Records in 1992 and

released a landmark album titled Blue Light ‘Til Dawn, which would pave the way for a new generation of jazz sing-ers seeking an approach and repertoire that challenges the supremacy of the American Standard songbook. Wilson has continued interpreting in fresh and creative ways vintage blues, country and folk music up until the present day. Her awards include: two Grammys, the Django D’Or, The Edison Music Award, a marker on the Mississippi Blues Trail, and the 2012 Echo Award for Jazz. She also performed one of the leading roles in Wynton Marsalis’ “Blood on the Fields,” the first jazz work to receive a Pulitzer Prize. n

Making music comes naturally to 28 year old Felix Pastorius. A family tradi-tion, his grandfather John Francis Pas-torius II, affectionately referred to as “Jack”, was a stand-up jazz drummer, that would sing while he would swing. Following in his footsteps one of Jack’s three sons, Felix’s dad, John Francis Pastorius III, took up the drums and later switched to bass. He was affec-tionately referred to as “Jaco”. Spending most his life living in Flori-da, Felix was always surrounded by a house full of instruments. While study-

ing them all, he landed on the bass, or maybe it landed on him. He’s earned his place, learned to navigate, and is here to take you for a ride. He is affec-tionately referred to as “Felix”. n

Whether you discover Oli Rockberger through his work as a singer-songwriter, producer, arranger, keys sideman, or as 1/3rd of acclaimed electronic trio Mister Barrington, you’ll be sure to find a dis-tinctive musical voice running through his rich and varied work. Londoner Rockberger, who currently lives in NY, first came to the US on a full-ride schol-arship at Berklee College of Music (’99 – ’04). Since then, he has worked with Levon Helm, Steve Gadd, Will Lee and Jackie DeShannon, Grammy winners Randy Brecker, Jesse Harris and John Mayer and jazz luminaries Les McCann

As a prime mover on New York’s downtown “No Wave” scene in the early 1980s, Tomas Doncker cut his teeth as a guitarist with such genre-busting groups as James Chance & The Contortions, Defunkt, J. Walter Negro & The Loose Jointz and many more. Eventually he went international, touring and recording in Japan with jazz pianist Masabumi Kikuchi, and producing studio and songwriting ses-sions with Boosty Collins, Yoko Ono, jazz saxophonist Sadao Watanabe and Grammy-winning producer Prince Charles Alexander. Doncker has con-tinued to work with an A-list of iconic musicians, including Ivan Neville (on his solo album Thanks), Bonnie Raitt, Meshell Ndegeocello, Living Colour lead singer Corey Glover, former P-Funk keyboardist Amp Fiddler. In 2008, he produced and released Inside Out, featuring his band with percussionist Daniel Sadownick and bassist Booker King, and followed that with The Mercy Suite, featuring Pu-litzer Prize-winning poet Yusef Komu-nyakaa. In 2010, Doncker performed in China as a headlining act at the Shanghai Folk Festival, in front of an audience of over 100,000 as part of the Shanghai World Expo. His latest work as a singer/songwriter and producer embraces a broader musical vision

that he likes to call “global soul,” draw-ing influences from numerous sources, including East and West Africa and the Caribbean. Small World is the flagship release on his own label, True Groove Records (distributed by Sony/RED), and will be followed by Power of the Trinity, a meditation on the legacy of Ethiopian emperor Haile Selassie, fea-turing legendary bassist/producer Bill Laswell, Ethiopian singer Ejigayehu “Gigi” Shibabaw, Senegalese percus-sionist Aiyb Dieng, saxophonist Peter Apfelbaum, and electro-dub specialist Dr.Israel.

Global Soul: The sound of our collec-tive conscious. The unified rhythm of heart beats creating a positive, spiritu-ally uplifting force for good. Musically speaking it is not genre specific, but in fact genre inclusive. It is the best of what we have to offer to each other, from Brooklyn to Ethiopia, and every-where in Between. For more than four decades, pianist and composer Joe Sample has been an integral, innovative and bestselling part of jazz history. Learning to play piano at age five, the Houston native’s formative years found him firmly rooted in many dif-ferent musical traditions, including gospel, soul, bebop, blues, Latin, and classical music. One of the many jazzmen who started out playing hard bop but went electric during the fusion era, (soon after at-tending Texas Southern University for three years,) Sample founded the Jazz Crusaders along with trom-bonist Wayne Henderson, tenor saxman Wilton Felder and drummer Stix Hooper. Relocating to and launch-ing their storied career in Los Angeles, The Crusad-ers patterned themselves after Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers, only without a trumpet and becoming renowned for their unique tenor/trombone front line. Sample focused on the acoustic piano during the Crusaders’ early years (late 50s-early 60s), but began to place greater emphasis on electric key-boards when the band turned to jazz/funk in the early 70s and dropped the “Jazz” from its name. After garner-ing numerous gold and platinum al-bums over the course of nearly three decades, The Crusaders’ last official recording was Life in the Modern World in 1987. Sample and Felder re-leased the double album Healing the Wounds on GRP in the early 90s, and in 2003 rejoined Hooper for a more full-scale reunion that produced the

Southern styled hit jazz fusion record-ing Rural Renewal - billed as the first new album by The Crusaders in over 20 years-and a popular subsequent tour. While actively touring as a member of the Crusaders, Sample simultaneously launched a successful solo career.

His bestselling recordings include Rainbow Seeker, Carmel, Voices in the Rain, Spellbound, Ashes to Ash-es, Invitation (a return to his bebop roots), Did You Feel That?, Old Plac-es, Old Faces and the George Duke produced Sample This. GRP also re-leased The Joe Sample Collection and the three CD Crusaders Collection as testament to Sample’s enduring legacy. The pianist’s most recent recordings are 1999’s The Song Lives On (featur-ing duets with singer Lalah Hathaway) and 2002’s The Pecan Tree, a color-ful tribute to his hometown of Houston, where he relocated in 1994. n

A popular phrase in years past was “Life Begins at 60,” but Gary Burton—as he has done so often throughout his career—is rewriting the book on retire-ment. Having turned 70 in January, an age when most artists begin to solely look back, Burton forges ahead with his new Mack Avenue Records album, Guided Tour, which solidifies the repu-tation of his next great band, The New Gary Burton Quartet. In addition, Bur-ton has literally written the book on his life, saving those backward glances for

his upcoming autobiography, Learning To Listen, due on Berklee Press in Sep-tember 2013. His stature as the former Executive Vice President at the famed Berklee College of Music caps a three-decade life in jazz education, which coincided with his already busy career as a performer and recording artist. Known for reintro-ducing and expanding the technique of fourmallet playing while crafting one of the jazz world’s signature sounds, he is also celebrating the 40th anniversary of his ongoing collaboration with pia-

nist Chick Corea (winning yet another GRAMMY® Award in 2013 for their most recent project, Hot House).

On Guided Tour, jazz’s most innova-tive and accomplished vibraphonist proves that The New Gary Burton Quartet—which he premiered last summer on his Mack Avenue debut, Common Ground—was no one-trick pony. Featuring the prodigal guitar genius Julian Lage as well as two vet-erans, bassist Scott Colley and drum-

mer Antonio S a n c h e z , Guided Tour provides a road map to one of the most dy-namic bands on the scene today. Apart from their own playing, many of jazz’s greatest fig-ures—Duke E l l i n g t o n , Charles Min-gus, Miles D a v i s—a r e also known for the hand-

ful of indisputably great bands they led throughout their careers. Like them, Burton has assembled a few such Olympian groups of his own: his first quartet, which pioneered the fu-sion of jazz and rock in 1967; his quin-tet with Pat Metheny in the 1970s; and now this band, which achieves a rare synergy. n

Singer Alicia Olatuja wowed every-one at Barack Obama’s presidential inauguration with her solo during the Brooklyn Tabernacle Choir’s perfor-mance of “The Battle Hymn of the Republic.” She’s already earned raves from the New York Daily News and on the View, and with the Choir’s single just released on iTunes, and a single about to be released on March 5 from Alicia’s own forthcoming CD, things are only looking up for her career. Alicia Olatuja’s reputation has been growing since her arrival in New York in 2005. Last year, the New York Times praised her performance with her hus-band, bassist Michael Olatuja, in their band The Olatuja Project, lauding her “strong, lustrous tone.” The Olatuja Project, where Alicia sings in various African dialects such as Yoruba and Showna, recently released their debut album, the Promise.

Alicia has sung with the Brooklyn Tab-ernacle Choir since 2007, often per-forms as a soloist with the Juilliard Jazz ensemble, and has sung with various recording artists such as Christian Mc-Bride, Chaka Khan and Bebe Winans. She has been working on an upcom-ing solo album, on which she will be joined by such acclaimed jazz artists as 3-time Grammy-Award winner Mc-Bride and husband Michael Olatuja (both on bass), Jon Cowherd and two-time Grammy-nominee Christian Sands (both on piano), Grégoire Maret on harmonica, Ulysses Owens, Jr., on drums and David Rosenthal on gui-tar. The CD, titled Timeless, is slated for release in June of this year, with a single, “In the Dark”, to be released on March 5th.

Alicia Olatuja is also a voice teacher, a vocal producer, and teaching artist for the Brooklyn Arts Council. n

Music master Chick Corea reinvents him-self — again. With all new music — and an all new band. Plus, fresh arrangements of Corea Classics. From sublime acoustic to brilliant elec-tric. Featuring a killin’ new band: bass-phe-nom Hadrien Feraud, force of nature Marcus Gilmore on drums (and grandson of the drum-god Roy Haynes), uber-innovator Tim Garland on saxes, flute and bass clarinet, and rising-star Charles Altura on guitar.

An NEA Jazz Master, 18-time Grammy winner, brilliant American composer and keyboard virtuoso, Chick Corea has attained living legend status after five decades of unparalleled creativ-ity and an artistic output that is simply staggering.

From his 2012 Grammy win for Best Improvised Jazz Solo, through his enormously prolific career, Chick has touched an astonishing number of musical bases in his illustrious career – from straight ahead to avant-garde, bebop to fusion, children’s songs to chamber music, along with some far-reaching forays into symphonic works –while maintaining a standard of excel-lence that is awe-inspiring. A tirelessly creative spirit, Chick continues to forge ahead, continually reinventing himself in the process. Chick began his career with ap-prenticeships with Stan Getz, Sarah Vaughan and Miles Davis’s band, where he participated in such land-mark sessions as In a Silent Way and Bitches Brew. Embarking on a solo career in 1966, Chick has been at the

forefront of jazz, both as a renowned pianist forging new ground with his acoustic jazz bands and as an inno-vative electric keyboardist with Return to Forever and the Elektric Band. His extensive discography boasts numer-ous essential albums, beginning with his 1968 classic, Now He Sings, Now He Sobs. Chick continues to make a significant impact on the scene, as evidenced by 2007’s Grammy-winning The En-chantment (duets with banjo virtuoso Bela Fleck), 2008‘s Grammy-winning The New Crystal Silence (duets with longstanding collaborator Gary Bur-ton), 2009’s Returns (documenting Re-turn to Forever’s 2008 reunion tour) and 2009’s Grammy-winning Five Peace Band Live (with John McLaughlin, Christian McBride, Kenny Garrett and Vinnie Colaiuta). In 2012, Corea took home two Gram-mys, including Best Jazz Instrumen-tal Solo, for Forever, the 2-CD set re-corded on his acoustic trio tour with Return to Forever bandmates Stanley Clarke and Lenny White. The two hon-ors were, remarkably, Corea’s 17th and 18th Grammy Awards. n

After developing his sound in New York City & New Orleans, Adrian’s recipe is best defined as a concoction of rhythm, blues and funk saturated with soul. Adrian’s versatility has been in demand for both local and international tour-ing acts such as Big Sam’s Funky Na-tion & Panic! at the Disco. His musical influences run the gamut from Donny Hathaway, Stevie Wonder and Bill With-ers. Adrian’s style resonates from all of these legends with his own version of soul that is romantic and heart-poured in shameless rhyme. Adrian teamed up with producer Scotty Hard (Wutang,

MMW, Boogie Down Productions) to record original songs arranged on his self-titled EP The Adrian Hibbs Project and is currently collaborating with Da-vid Ott for their electro-funk duo “Red Romeo.” n
