ALIEN INVASION ORIGINATE- Menswear Fall 2016 I was inspired by the exhibit at the New York Public Library, Public Eye: 175 Years of Sharing Photography. The exhibition showcased the evolution of photography and how we see it today. As I looked upon the images from the past, I became more aware of the perspective from which they were taken. The more obvious ones were aerial views. This got me thinking about life and how people are stuck looking at the world in black and white. From afar, the photograph looked like a flat piece of art consisting of curves and simple shapes. As I moved closer, I was surprised to see how my mind was rejecting the reality that it was a “landscape.” The average person, and at the time myself included, understands landscape as a horizontal image composed of mountains, trees, fields, etc. We have been taught to think this way and have mindlessly accepted that what we are taught is the right way. I beg to differ. I believe we should question the “norm” and be creative and open-minded in our way of thinking and start finding the “grey” in life.

ALIEN INVASION ORIGINATE- Menswear Fall 2016

I was inspired by the exhibit at the New York Public Library, Public Eye: 175 Years of Sharing Photography.

This got me thinking about my own personal experience with aerial views. Coming from a rural area, the geometrics of farmland instantly came to mind, in addition to the “alien invasion” circles, locally known as center pivots. More specifically, the numerous flights where I luckily obtained a window seat with a view. This lead to research of what was going on in the trend forecasting industry.

Designer: Valentino Fall 15 Looking through collections, Valentino’s stood out to me the most. I feel he really captured the essence of the graphic geometric in his prints and garment construction. I also liked how it was more of a sophisticated utilitarian look, with a sweater paired with blue jeans and black patent shoes. I also noticed the use of natural earth tones of blue, tan, and grey. This combination of earth colored textiles and materials really rounded out the trend for me.

Print Inspiration: Center Pivots

For my print I designed was an actual aerial view of farmland with the circles from the center pivots. I thought it would be interesting to take the photograph and color reduce it. This graphic could be used just like the prints in the Valentino collection on a sweater.
