In Punjab, there was una- nimity that the ruling Akali Dal-BJP combine would face a meltdown but no consensus on whether Congress or Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) would fi- nish in front. The polls also differed on the outcome in Ut- tarakhand and Manipur whi- le projecting BJP as the lar- gest party in a possibly hung Goa assembly. While each of the exit polls put BJP in front, the SP- Congress alliance in second spot and BSP third in UP, the number of seats projected for BJP and its allies varied from 161 to 285, a range that makes either a hung house or a clear winner possible if any of the polls is accurate. The lowest estimate for the BJP alliance came from CVoter, which gave the saf- fron combine around 161seats in the 403-member assembly; the top of the range was Toda- y’s Chanakya’s estimate of 285. Three of the six polls saw no clear winner while the rest gave BJP a majority. On Punjab, all but one poll predicted a single-digit tally for the ruling Akali-BJP alli- ance in the 117-member as- sembly. One pollster, CVoter, gave AAP a clear majority with 63 seats and another, Ax- is, gave Congress a majority, but the rest predicted a close contest between the two and a hung house. But with Cong- ress already his ally, the call se- emed to be clearly aimed at the Mayawati-led party which has been at loggerheads with SP since the mid-90s when their coalition came apart.
