The National Biotechnology Policy and Strategy was developed by
The National Committees on Biotechnology at National Science Foundation.
Approved by the Cabinet in July 2010
One of the main objectives…Position all biotechnologies, i.e.
Agriculture Medical Environmental Energy Industrial, as key contributors
in enhancing the quality of life of the citizensand to support the national development of Sri Lanka through economic advancement.
Six key themes have been identified in this policy that will form
“A coordinated and an effective strategy”
for Biotechnology in Sri Lanka
To promote development and utilization of Biotechnology and related industry
The Key Themes
1. Government Commitment for Research, Development and Commercialization of Biotechnology.
2. Promote Public Awareness and Positioning Biotechnology in Society.
3. Human Resource Development to Build Capacity in Biotechnology.
4. Sustainable Use of Biodiversity for Biotechnology.
5. Enhance Opportunities for Biotechnology Related Industries and Entrepreneurship in Agriculture Health Industry Energy Environment
6. Establishment of Centers of Excellence and Biotechnology Parks
Government Commitment for Research,
Development and Commercialization of
Biotechnology.
A strong government commitment and support
is needed to,
Address the challenges of Biotechnology in Sri Lanka,Directing to its success and sustenance
An Act to provide for the establishment of National
Biotechnology Council,
To determine its composition, objectives and
functions
To provide for matters connected therewith
To be enacted by the Parliament of the Democratic
Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka.
An Institutional arrangement for development of Biotechnology
in Sri Lanka has been identified.
