Science: Formative Assessment Tasks

Dmitri Mendeleev is the scientist who was the first to arrange the known elements in a

special way, that is now called the Periodic Table. He did this when only a few

elements had been discovered. Since then we have discovered his ‘missing’ elements.

TTAASSKK::

Write an article for a newspaper that celebrates the work of Mendeleev, 150 years after

his discovery.

He developed the Periodic Table in 1869, so you have time to prepare for the 150th

anniversary in 2019!

Include:

How Mendeleev arranged the elements known at that time.

Explain how he was able to predict the properties of the missing elements.

What the modern Periodic Table tells us about the patterns in the elements.

It is fascinating that two of the most reactive chemicals, chlorine (a poisonous gas) and

sodium (a soft metal that reacts violently with water) can react together to form an

unreactive substance called salt.

TTAASSKK::

Design an information poster that shows the properties and reactions of Group 1 and

Group 7 elements.

Include:

The properties of four of the elements in each group.

How elements from each group react together.

Why the reactivity changes down each group.

A range of chemical formulae, word equations and balanced

Nanotechnology holds lots of potential for the future. It is the science that could change

our lives radically, including medicine, food, cosmetics, paints and building materials.

However, as with all new technologies, there are a great number of concerns for its

safety and exaggerated claims for its uses.

TTAASSKK::

A nanotechnology company has asked you to design a poster or leaflet to help people

understand the benefits of nanotechnology.

The poster or leaflet must include:

Introduction – explain what nanotechnology is.

FACTS: Identify what nanotechnology is used for now and its benefits.

FICTION: Identify and explain away some of the exaggerated ideas about

nanotechnology.

FUTURE: Identify and explain some of the future uses of nanotechnology.
