Major Research Contribution

i. I have the honour of developing a first germplasm repository of apple germplasm of Kashmir comprising of more than 150 cultivars at Zakura Campus Kashmir University. Another significant achievement is the development of first F1 mapping population of apple in India comprising of 240 F1 plants from a cross between two contrasting parents viz. Delicious x Mahraji cultivars. The same population has been replicated at three other places in India viz. Baderwah Campus, Jammu University, Uttarakhand and Himachal. With this achievement, the DBT has sanctioned phase-II of the project for QTL analysis and Marker Assisted Selection for tagging disease resistance genes. In short, the above two populations (germplasm repository and Mapping population) shall serve as back bone for all future researchers involved in apple breeding in J&K as well as in India.

ii. In 2013, I initiated work on Genetic Improvement of saffron (Crocus sativus L.) with the help of a DBT project “Induction of variability for genetic improvement of Kashmir saffron” in collaboration with Department of Biotechnology, Jammu University. Saffron is a triploid crop, grows vegetatively only and therefore lacks variability due to absence of sexuality. On the other hand saffron is most expensive spice in the world and a large population of Kashmir is involved in saffron cultivation. Till date we have successfully developed In vitro mutagenesis protocol of saffron crop. So far we have been able to produce some 200-300 EMS mutagenized in vitro corms which have been transferred to the field. We have also been able to

6

standardize induction of hexaploidy in saffron through colchicine treatment. If successful, this technique will help stabilizing sexuality in saffron and we may expect a seed based population in this crop plant. Both the above research initiatives (induction of variability and hexaploidy) will certainly benefit the local saffron growing community in their economic upliftment.

iii. I have been able to generate passport data information of around 40 cultivars of apricot available in Kashmir. Recently we have established a germplasm repository of around 60 cultivars of apricot from Kashmir and Ladakh at Govt. Horticulture Nursery, Zakura Srinagar. The germplasm resources generated in apricot will certainly help in future genetic improvement of apricot crop through conventional and molecular breeding approaches. The development of F1 population in apricot is in progress.
