Thecity, having been ruled by various dynasties,is an amalgamation of cultures, art andhistory. This is the reason that a strongHindu Shaivite culture dominates the city. The famous Lingayat Siddeshwara Festivaltakes place in January/February and draws ahuge crowd every year. The city has a lesserknown side to it, that of the Sufis. The Sufisof Bijapur were established during the reignof Qutubuddin Aibak. The first sight of Bijapur, grubby andramshackle, can be a let-down. But that’s tillyou see the monuments: the powerful GolGumbaz, the majestic fortifications, thegraceful Ibrahim Rouza, the variety ofmosques and mausoleums and theingenuity of the waterworks. Going throughBijapur, you relive history. You become
aware of prosperity and bloodshed, of pietyand learning, of intrigue and architecturalgreatness. Bijapur Fort is the city’s majorattraction and houses many buildingsbelonging to the Adilshahi dynasty. Anotherfamous attraction and a marvel of acousticarchitecture is the Gol Gumbaz. The initiator of Adil Shahirule was Yusuf Adil Shahi (son of aConstantinople sultan), who established hisrule in the late 15th century. The Adil Shahirule lasted till Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb’sconquest of Bijapur in 1686. It thereafterkept changing hands between the Marathasand Mughals. Then the British establishedtheir hold in 1818, and let it rot. Bijapur isnot beautiful by any stretch of imagination. But its monuments evoke the greatness ofits past much more than any chocolate-boxprettiness could.
