BIG SPRING NEWS Fundraising November 2019 October 2019 THE BIG SPRING SENIOR CENTER OFFERS THE FOLLOWING CLASSES: Zumba Gold—every Monday and Thursday at 8:30 a.m. at the First United Presbyterian Church. The cost is $2.00-a-class for those 60+/$5.00-a-class for those 50 to 59. Zumba Gold is a low-intensity version of the Latin dance-inspired fitness class aimed at a more mature audience. Research at Minot State University in North Dakota has indicated that Zumba not only has an effect on physical fitness, but also on cognitive (mental) function. Just walk in. Stretching—We stretch, using a video, at the Big Spring Senior Center. It is free for those who are members/$5.00 for non-members or those 50 to 59. Please check the activity calendar for dates and times; although it is usually on a Friday at 12:00 p.m. Just walk in. T’ai Chi for Arthritis— Held on Tuesdays at 9:00 a.m. at the First United Presbyterian Church. T’ai Chi helps your balance; it’s a good fall preventer. Cost is $5 donation per class. To register, call 717-776-4478. Please note calendar for schedule. Yoga—Wednesdays from 8:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. The class is held at Big Spring Presbyterian Church, 25 South Corporation Street, Newville. Yoga is a mind-body practice that combines stretching exercises, controlled breathing and relaxation. Yoga can help reduce stress, lower blood pressure and improve heart function (from the Mayo Clinic website). The cost of a 10 week-session is $65/$55, if you are a member of the Senior Center. Registration and payment are due before the classes start. Participants can opt into a session at any time and payment will be pro-rated based on the number of remaining classes in the session. ############################################################################### Free Income Tax Preparation by AARP Tax Aides: It’s THAT time of year again—TAX Time!!!! Don’t PANIC! AARP volunteers will prepare senior citizens’ income taxes without charge at the Big Spring Senior Center, 91 Doubling Gap Road, Newville, every Friday from February 7th to April 3rd. Appointments must be made and are held only on Fridays. The Center is handling the scheduling. We will start accepting appointments AFTER January 1st. DON’T wait to make your appointment. Spots fill up FAST! Make your appointment soon!!! Call 717-776-4478 weekdays from 8:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. The volunteers have recently completed training to keep current. Meals must be ordered by noon one business day in advance. So, if you call in the morning of your scheduled meal to cancel due to a non-medical issue or you do not show, you are responsible for the full purchase of your ordered meal which is $4.44. Failure to con- tact us that you are not coming results in a meal that can not be served and puts the staff in a di- lemma trying to get someone to eat the ordered meal. Lastly, review your order with staff the week before to confirm that your order is recorded for the following week. Cinema Friday Movie, Root Beer Floats & Popcorn Come out and join your friends at the Big Spring Senior Center and watch a blockbuster movie on January 24th and February 21st from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. We are asking for a $2 donation to cover the cost of the floats and popcorn. Wii Bowling: Check out Wii Bowling Tuesdays at 12:30 p.m. This game is limited to four players, so signups are necessary. The Thrill of Las Vegas comes to the Big Spring Senior Center Bob Ballard has a new and thrilling game that he is introducing at the Senior Center. It’s called “Las Vegas” and is fun and competitive. No cash will be exchanged; just laughs and giggles. This game will be played at the Senior Center beginning at 12:45 p.m. the first Friday of the month. Mark your calendars for January 3rd and February 7th and join Bob.
