Welcome to September! This has been a great week at BIFS! Wehad an enthusiastic parent coffee and the first PTA meeting of theyear, our middle and high school students participated in excitingteam building camp experiences around Korea, after schoolactivities were in full swing and student assemblies have alreadybegun!

Speaking of assemblies, I was invited to be a special guest at ourElementary School assembly recently. I was asked to welcome ourstudents, share what makes BIFS so special and share one of myfavorite books. I shared with our students that THEY are what makes

BIFS so special. We are so fortunate to be able to work with students from so many different parts of the worldwho have such a broad range of gifts and passions! This tied into the book I shared, “You Are Special” by MaxLucado. Our special students are at the heart of what we believe and do at BIFS.

Middle School and High SchoolReady... Set... GO!

12

This week our Co-Curricular Activities (CCA) started for our middle school students. Mr. Craig Wilson hasworked hard to set up an incredible program that strengthens our students’ minds and bodies. I am so proud ofthe many different things that are offered to students.

Research is very clear on students being active in programs after school. A paper from the Institute of EducationSciences states that students who participate in afterschool activities, attend school and class, get good grades,do well on assessments, and are more likely to attend college. I know that when I was in school, participation inathletics made me schedule my time wisely and helped me with my social skills. There are many more benefitsso be sure to consider having your child participate.

If you are interested in stopping by to participate in your child's activities, we would love to have you join in. Iwill be making my own T-Shirt and playing Ultimate Frisbee. I also hope to try some of the other CCAs as well. Ihope you can find time to come be involved. Just look at how much fun the students are having... don't youwant to be a child again?...............................................................................................................................................................

High School NewsA Balancing Act

It was wonderful to get outside at the end of the day and seestudents participating in the CCAs. As adults we can get caughtup in our work and forget the importance of other aspects of ourlives. Work gets busy, we get stressed, and we sometimes forgetabout making sure we have “balance”. Yes, work is extremelyimportant, however so is our overall health and creating balancein our lives. What about our children? Throughout the year, students have the opportunity to participate in many athleticteams, clubs and a variety of activities. Participating in activities

13

or athletics outside of the classroom is a wonderful opportunity for students to develop other skills, such ascollaboration, teamwork and leadership. We strive to present opportunities for students to develop in all areas ofthe curriculum; social, emotional and academic. Students have the opportunity to develop strong connections tothe school community, and in some instances, the larger community. Encourage your child to get involved, butmake sure that they have a healthy balance between work and play. Having said that, the reverse also bearsconsideration. Students also need to have “down time” between their studies and activities. On Tuesday,September 8 we will be hosting a Grade 11 Parent Information Evening at 7:00 pm in the MHS Hall - The focusof this evening will be the "balancing act" for IB Diploma Programme and Courses students.

Who Do I Call?

As I have mentioned in past articles, communication from school to home is a major areaof focus this year. However, communication from home to school is also critical to oursuccess. As your child has many teachers it is difficult to know who to call. If your child isexperiencing academic difficulties, or you have specific questions about a particularsubject, you should begin by calling or e-mailing your child’s subject teacher. This isalways the best course of action, as the subject teacher has the most information aboutthe progress of your child.http://goo.gl/SXYWF3

We are pleased to inform you of the options available to you and your child for this year’s athletic program. Asin the past, we have made commitments to compete in both the KISAC and SKAK conferences. As you haveexperienced, these conferences offer our students opportunities to travel and compete locally as well as in Seouland Jeju. The school has made a commitment to continue to subsidize some of the expense, but we mustcharge a fee of 400,000 Korean Won to all athletes to continue to cover all the expenses.

All KISAC tournaments will be two day events which may require flights to Jeju Island with overnights and meals. All transportation, meals and hotel costs will be covered by the fees.

Students interested in being part of a sports team will have to pay the fee before tryouts begin. Those notchosen for the team will receive a full refund on the fee. Those chosen for the team will be expected to attendall practices and competitions for the entire season, communicating with the coach if there are any conflicts. Norefunds will be made after try-outs have been completed. There will be a few more games added as the seasonprogresses. This cannot be prevented.

Elementary Sports will be offered through the elective program. No charge will be assessed this year. No longdistance travel or overnights are planned.
