Objective of this presentation

• Show you what we have done to conceive and deliver successful projects

• Reference is the last Sustainable Development Project Conference in Geneva November 2002

• Present a real example of an on-going project with Bulgarian partners

• Pragmatic tips and methods to start and develop projects


Sustainable Development Project Convention in Geneva

• 24 projects were selected and presented• 6 of those projects found the requested support

and partners during the event• 9 others became very successful during the 6

months period after the event• The questions to be asked are:

– Why did people like them?– What made those projects different?


Successful projects

• All projects were:– Useful: there was a real need defined and agreed– Problem and solution matched perfectly– Practical: people could relate to the issue– Well prepared, no open questions– Business plan available– Sustainable, they needed however initial funding– Management team in place– All interested parties were ACTIVELY involved since

the begin

Innovative thinking

• Usually, people think about their problem, looking inside only

• Innovative thinking looks at both, inside and outside the boundaries of the project

• We identify a so called value chain, well known methodology in the industry

• Each component of the project has a recognised value and benefit

• Sounds simple, but some times one has to think differently - « out of the box »

Questions during the design process

• Do the users really want it?• What is the benefit for them?• Is the ‘product’ adequate for the need?• Is it competitive / the best solution?• Are the needs well identified• Will we get what we need to execute the project?• What is the interest of the supplier? • Why should he supply this project (funds, material,

expertise, etc.)?

• Is the project sustainable, in terms of investment and operations?
