My name is Belinda Stuart, I am an architectural graduate having recently completed my Masters of Architecture Professional at Victoria University. Previously I have completed a Bachelor of Architectural Studies majoring in Architecture and a Postgraduate Certificate in Design Environments majoring in project management.

Throughout my education I have completed a number of projects spanning a wide range of briefs and outcomes. Projects have ranged from large scale design interventions including; a cross programmed car parking building and highly constrained planning projects including a Cuba Street precinct re-design and a smaller scale seismic retrofit of a heritage building. These projects have developed my design skills at a range of scales and with varying levels of brief flexibility. Management projects have included a feasibility study for the development of Shelly Bay in Wellington, which included costing of the design to ensure viability, and considerations of planning constraints and sustainable design.

Through studying a range of different fields I have realised I have a significant interest in project management and the delivery of architectural projects to cost, quality and time constraints. I have been very successful in papers in this field including project management, cost planning and construction law, also gaining certification as a associate project manager (CAPM) through the International Project Management Institute. The structural aspects of architecture, including construction and structural integration, are also areas of strength and interest I have developed throughout my education.

During my summer holidays I have enjoyed working at Paris Magdalinos Architects, in the Hawke’s Bay, gaining experience in a firm situation, and broadening my skill base.

I am keen and willing to learn new ways of designing and approaching the construction industry and am eager to gain experience in the work force as I enjoy meeting new people and gaining new perspectives on my current skills.

ObjectivesTo expand my current knowledge and experience in design and building construction related areas with a particular emphasis on design development, management skills and planning. InterestsIn addition to my studies I maintain an active lifestyle enjoying sport, playing guitar and listening to music in my downtime. I have enjoyed backpacking around South East Asia and am about to embark on a trip around South America, before moving to New York City for a year.

To  Whom  It  May  Concern,  

I  have  taught  and  worked  with  Belinda  for  the  last  two  years  and  of  the  200  or  so  students  I  have  known  in  that  time  she  is  the  one  that  I  hold  in  highest  regard.  

Most  of  my  work  has  been  with  the  Building  Science  students  and  because  of  our  streaming  system  the  ones  who  make  it  into  the  Architecture  programme  are  generally  of  a  higher  calibre,  but  Belinda  stands  out  from  her  peers.  She  has  none  of  the  mis-­‐placed  arrogance  that  besets  many  of  them,  she  just  gets  the  job  done.  

In  my  view  an  essential  competence  for  an  Architect  is  to  accurately  assess  the  brief,  figure  out  the  time  available  and  do  the  work  in  the  time  alloted.  She  is  a  master  of  this  process.  

Her  work  is  accurate,  innovative  and  excitingly  presented.  Her  delivery  is  self-­‐assured  and  measured  without  fudge  or  distraction.  

Her  biggest  strength  is  her  calmness  under  pressure.  This  alone  is  a  quality  for  which  I  would  employ  her.  She  tutored  for  me  last  term  and  often  the  parameters  would  change  or  the  students  would  throw  up  challenging  obstacles  and  I  never  once  saw  her  flinch.  We  split  a  heavy  load  of  marking    in  a  short  time  span  which  she  undertook  thoroughly  and  efficiently  despite  a  multitude  of  other  pressures  on  her  at  the  time.  

There  are  very  few  people  in  this  World  that  I  would  trust  to  cover  my  back  but  Belinda  would  be  one  of  them.  

She  has  been  an  excellent  student.  She  is  an  inspiring  individual  and  will  make  a  fantastic  Architect.  

So  I  am  very  happy  to  commend  Belinda  to  you  and  wish  her  well.

Cuba Street Heritage Retrofit ProjectsMasters Studio Project

Titled ‘A Supercharged Park’ the project is a speculative response to the infrastructural requirements of Paraparaumu, a low density regional town centre located in close proximity to Wellington. It explores architecture as a means to actively engage infrastructure, creating a socially and culturally exhilarating piece of construction.

The project brief required the design of a new, New Zealand School of Music (NZSM) building on an empty site on Ghuznee Street, Wellington. The project was a navigation of the sites strict planning rules, the spatial requirements of the school and the site located on a prominent corner in Wellington City.

The two stage project required the retrofit a single existing earthquake prone, heritage building on Cuba Street, followed by a cluster of buildings. The proposal includes interior design, seismic strengthening and a services upgrade, within an architectural upgrade of the heavily pedestrian occupied site.
