Information Literacy is for everyone

“In an era of lifelong learning, this effectively means that information literacy has relevance for all ages from primary school to senior citizens. Information literate people understand more than how to find information, they understand its limitations and the need to examine how they use information, and they understand how to manage and communicate information. Information literacy is an essential and discrete dexterity – everyone relies on information everyday.” CILIP

• learning and teaching approaches – how primary schools were engaging with information and critical

Definition of Texts “the medium through which ideas, experiences, opinions and information can

be communicated’ which covers all different formats as the table below demonstrates”.

Examples of texts:

Literacy across learning experiences and Outcomes – e.g.

I enjoy exploring and choosing stories and other texts to watch, read or listen to, and can share my likes and dislikes. LIT 0-19a

- children and parents are introduced to the benefits of questioning. Questions were based on Bloom’s Taxonomy and produced in conjunction with the parents linked to familiar fairytales.

Information Literacy in Junior (Primary) 2

By investigating the range of foods available I can discuss how they contribute to a healthy

diet. HWB 1-30a

Research activity – ‘Facts about our topic’ – working in pairs the children research a topic (fruit, vegetables, bread, dairy products) finding interesting facts about their topic using a selection of books from the school library that the teacher had picked and displayed in her classroom.

Evaluation Exercise- working in pairs the children had to discuss with their partners and use the evaluation form (see attached photo) to carry out an ‘Evaluation of my Picallili Monster’.

School formed a working group to plan and implement Critical Literacy which is seen as “the way that we interact with and make meaning from different texts” and “involves the reader analysing and engaging with a text”.

• Primary 1 - Goldilocks and the Three Bears to look at the text from different points of view – What would you do? Using role play and looking at moral issues. What would they (the children) have done in her (Goldilocks) shoes: Goldilocks went into a house that she didn’t know – would you? She sat in chairs which broke etc.

“takes cognizance of established frameworks; however it, it adapts them to fit more closely with Curriculum for Excellence

and to strike a chord with the target learners and practitioners.”
