Genetic selection...

We can identify young beef bulls that have the potential to transmit the traits we are looking for in a beef sire, by using EBV data*. However, EBV data only relates to data collected on beef cows and is often based on small data sets.

We know that calving ease, gestation length, calf quality and calf mortality are the most important traits to a dairy farmer. To identify the truly elite beef sires for use on dairy cows, it is essential to gather significant data sets, and that’s where the Genus ABS Beef Calving Survey comes in...

Keeping standards high...

Hundreds of young Genus ABS beef sires have been put through our calving survey and assessed by dairy farmers to achieve a ‘proven’ status.

Our selection standard is high, around 90% of our beef sires are rejected because they don’t make the grade for our proven stud.

Only 2% reach legendary diamond sire status, including Nightingale Ploughman, Chestnuts Umpire, Dinton Nautical, Aynho Beck, Balthayock Champion, Kramiek Et Ten Durme, Ronick Hawk, Killerton Travis, Brinkton Brilliant, Moorsley Anderson and Lorabar Mighty Prince.

Meet The Team

Jocelyn is responsible for all Beef sire marketing, promotion and initiatives across Europe.

Arwel is responsible for hand picking bulls with potential to enter our elite stud. The selected sires are then put through our beef calving survey.

Hannah runs the Beef Calving Survey, helping to put young sires through testing stages and collating results to produce fully proven sires.

Beef sires that are ‘unproven’ are classed as ‘under survey’. This means that we are currently collecting data to measure calving ease, gestation length and calf quality. We advise you to take caution if using these young sires.

We measure each of these traits against the Genus ABS breed average, and then calculate a BSI score.

Example of calving survey table for British Blue sire Tamhorn Freeman, page 14. His BSI figures show he is above average for calving ease, average for gestation length, excellent for calf quality and below average for calf mortality.

Genus ABS sexed beef semen has offered me the opportunity to retain the best bloodlines in my herd and increase the speed of my genetic gain.

A high genetic easy calving bull from Genus ABS became available sexed which I used in my pedigree Charolais herd with great success, achieving a 78% conception rate.

Moving forward I would be more than happy to use sexed semen on my breeding heifers and best cows. This has allowed me to breed females of a higher genetic merit and ultimately have more heifer calves to retain as breeding stock from the best maternal lines, while still allowing me to retain my high herd health status. We were faced with an aging herd and needed to increase the flow of replacements. Not keen to buy in replacements with the disease risk being involved, the decision was taken to use AI and Genus ABS sexed beef semen.

AI and sexed semen has allowed us to select bulls with strong maternal traits. In the first year we used just conventional semen, but for the last two years we’ve used sexed semen, which has significantly increased our chances of getting heifers from heifers.

The system now, is first service to sexed semen. Last year we achieved 68% conception rate to sexed semen and this year it was 72%. Second service is to conventional semen and then we let the bull sweep up so we have a concentrated breeding window of six weeks.

This year overall we got 92% in calf to AI which has tightened our heifer calving period and means we will have a nice even batch of heifers to rear and calve at 24 months of age.
