There are a number of bulls in thecatalogue noted as semen royaltysires. This means that any pedigree calf registered from these bulls is liable to a semen royalty charge when the pedigree calf is registered. The semen royalty fees are available from our office in Dovea Genetics.

Health and safety has become animportant issue on Irish Beef Farms.For our A.I. technician’s safety and to achieve the best conception rates, proper handling and restraining facilities must be in place using A.I.

INTRODUCTIONWelcome to the Dovea Genetics 2018 Beef Directory. We are delighted to have put together a large and detailed directory of bulls which will hopefully suit your farming system. The directory contains a wide and diverse range of easy calving bulls, terminal bulls and maternal bull across all breeds.

The directory contains a number of new exciting bulls that will complement our existing panel of proven bulls. The success of our beef breeding programme is evident in this directory with a number of high index bulls on either terminal or replacement index across the breeds. It is important that you select the correct bull for your farming system so we suggest you talk to one of our Area Representatives to ensure you maximise the value of your offspring.

The majority of bulls in the directory qualify for the BDGP scheme. However please note that there will be updates to the indices (Terminal & Replacement) by ICBF during the year so the figures of individual bulls will change. It is important to consult with your area representative or A.I. technician that the bull or bulls you have selected still qualify.

At the time of publication the suckler cow herd in Ireland is under pressure. The suckler herd is of vital importance to rural economies across Ireland. The team in Dovea depend on the suckler farmers for their continued business and recognise their importance to rural economies. Dovea is committed to investing in genetics for the suckler herd that will deliver profitable offspring for suckler farmers across Ireland.

Oestrus synchronisation programmes allow a number of advantages in any AI based breeding programme: -1. Cows and heifers are in heat during a predictable period following treatment allowing for fixed time

AI (FTAI)2. The time required for heat detection is reduced which in turn decreases the cost of labour associated

with the breeding season.3. Cows and heifers can conceive earlier in the breeding season. Because oestrous cycles are advanced,

a high proportion of cycling cows should come into heat at the beginning of the breeding season. With synchronisation it is possible to have two chances to get cows and heifers in calf to AI during a 21-25 day planned insemination period.

4. Calves born to earlier conceptions will consequently be older and heavier when being weaned. Replacement heifers will also be more mature and heavier at first insemination allowing for better breeding performance during her lifetime.

Synchronisation is no substitute for poor management and care is needed to ensure the success of any oestrus synchronisation programme:1. Ensure adequate time has elapsed between calving and any synchronisation protocol (a minimum of

40-50 days after calving is normally suggested).2. Cows should be in average or above average body condition at time of treatment. Good transitional

cow management is vital to achieve this. Young, thin and late calving cows are less likely to perform well in any synchronisation programme.

3. Cows should have experienced minimal calving difficulty and show no clinical signs of endometritis or metritis. Having cows examined by your vet prior to any synchronisation programme is advised.

4. Replacement heifers should have developed to a pre-breeding target weight of at least 65% of projected mature body weight.

5. Ensure all vaccination programmes are completed at least 3 weeks prior to the synchronisation programme.

6. For the successful use of any synchronisation and AI breeding programme the availability of safe handling facilities and adequate labour is vital as the animals will have to be handled on a number of occasions. The number of times animals are handled will vary according to the synchronisation programme used.
