    Industry Developments1. In September 2010, the UAE announced plans to position up the firstmicrochip factory in the Middle East by 2015. The project is backed bythe Abu Dhabi government-owned Advanced Technology InvestmentCompany (ATIC) and is expected to cost the company US$6-7mn. Federalspending will be an important driver of IT opportunities in Industry

    Developments.2. The Ministry of Education is leading an initiative to supply computers andthe internet to state schools after concerns that they were lagging behindprivate schools in IT and internet use.

    IT ServicesBMI predicts IT services growth will remain in positive territory over 2011-2015. Spending is forecast to rise from US$1.0bn in 2011 to more thanUS$1.5bn in 2015. The IT services revenue compound annual growth rate(CAGR) over the forecast period is expected to be 10%. Services have become

    an increasingly important component of many deployment contracts, asevident in recent projects by leading Emirati corporations such as the Emiratesairline and Etisalat.

    E-Readiness

    Despite the economic downturn, which has taken a toll on e-readiness ofcountries, the UAE has improved its score and jumped the global ranking bya notch, emerging the top scoring country in the Middle East and Africa

    (MENA).The UAE has seen an improvement in its score from 6.09 (out of10) in 2008 to 6.12 in 2009 to 7.64 points out of 10 in 2010, which hasresulted in the country being ranked 34 among 70 countries listed in theEconomist Intelligence Unit's (EIU) e-Readiness Rankings 2009-2010.

    ICT Facts about UAE- Reports1) Report by the International Telecommunication Union that aims to measure' theglobal information society using ICT rankings sees United Arab Emirates experienceda large value increase as a result of strong performance in both ICT access and use.Furthermore, UAE is the first country to surpass the 200 percent mobile cellularpenetration mark.

    2) According to research by economic and financial analysts Global Insight, UAE is

    currently spending US$14.8 billion on Information and Communications Technology(ICT), and that figure is set to rise to US$14.8 billion in 2011. The country has beena leader in the Middle East when it comes to spending on ICT, Global Insight reportsupplementary added to the report.

    3) International Data Corporation (IDC) analysis predicts that of the overall ITindustry, IT spend alone in the UAE will reach US$2.3 billion in 2012, with acontinuous annual growth of 23.9 per cent. IDC further predicts that IT spend in the

    UAE to reach US$1.8 billion by 2013, with a growth rate of 32%.4) UAE scores the 1st rank first among the Arab states and 23rd internationally by the

    World Economic Forums Networked Readiness Index (NRI) 2009/10 report (whichassesses the impact of ICT on the development and competitiveness of nations).The NRI also ranked the UAE second in terms of government procurement ofadvanced technology products.

    4) Storage management and security: As network usage grows, demand forprotection of data is expected to increase.

    5) Mobile, data and video services and higher capacity uninterruptible power

    supplies (UPS).6) Arabised IT products e.g. Mindware, Adobe have released Arabised

    versions of their products.7) Business Intelligence (BI): A report from KPMG indicates:

    Around 20% companies in UAE are implementing BI currently 50% companies in UAE are planning to implementBI in the next 1 -- 3 years. Finance and Business Heads use BI more extensively than the C-level

    executives and the Business Analysts. However, the usage ofBI among front-line staff and customers is very low in UAE.

    Most of the companies have reported improved decision-making as a result ofthe BI implementation. 50% of those surveyed by KPMG also reportedimproved customer services and improved financial performance as the benefitsrealized because ofBI.
