By far, the quadrennial Winter Olympics provide Amer-icans the greatest visibility of the exciting sport of cross-country (x-c) skiing. Chances are pretty good that if you watched any coverage of the 2014 Winter Games from Sochi, you caught some of the x-c skiing action. What you may have noticed is that there are two very distinct styles of cross-country skiing: the Classic or Diagonal-Stride method, which evolved in the Scandinavian Coun-tries as a means of transportation and has been part of the Winter Olympics since the fi rst games in 1924, and the more recent Skating or Free-Technique, which be-came a recognized Winter Olympic Sport in 1988. The Free-Technique, which employs shorter, stiffer skis and longer poles, resembles the movements of an ice skater on hockey skates, and is primarily limited to groomed trails at ski resorts. Our focus will be on the Classic or Diagonal-Stride method, created out of necessity to gather fi rewood, hunt game, and visit neighboring vil-lages in cold weather regions. It is a great winter out-door activity for individuals of all ages and ability levels that can be practiced on prepared trails at ski areas or locally on ball fi elds, park property, state game lands, bike trails, golf courses, farm lands, and just about any other open area once there is suffi cient snow cover. Classic x-c skis are extremely specialized outdoor equipment. Typically, long and narrow with curved front tips, they weigh less than 4 lbs. each, including bindings. The tips (front third) and tails (back third) ta-per from only 3/8” thick towards the kick zone (middle third), which expands to 1 1 ⁄ 2” to facilitate binding at-tachment. Another very unique feature is their camber. When placed on a fl at surface, only the tips and tails touch, while the kick zone bows up over 1” above the ground. The glide provided by the tips and tales of the unweighted ski (the leg pulling forward) and the cor-responding thrust provided by the kick zone of the weighted ski (the leg pushing backward) is the founda-tion of the Diagonal-Stride on x-c skis. (It seems harder to describe in words than do on the snow and we’ll fo-cus on the “how to” next week.) The kick zone of the weighted ski fl attens out to create friction with the snow. Classic x-c skis are divided into “waxed” and “waxless”, which can be somewhat misleading. “Waxed” skis use glide wax on their tips and tails to travel smoothly over the snow and a sticky kick wax in their kick zone to grip the snow, while “waxless” skis have a fi sh scales pattern in their kick zone for grip. Properly waxing “waxed” skis is an art and science based on temperature, snow con-ditions, and the weather. To avoid having to constantly change glide and kick waxes, the vast majority of recre-ational x-c skiers use “waxless” skis, which still employ special liquid or paste wax on their tips, tails, and kick zones to provide glide and prevent snow/ice build-up. (The warm conditions at Sochi resulted in some Olym-pic x-c competitors using “waxless” skis, which is un-usual.) There are several types of x-c ski bindings, which only attach to the toe of x-c boots to enable the skier to fl u-idly stride on his/her skis. Most common is the “Nordic Norm” 3-pin binding, which is 75mm wide and attaches to an extra “lip” that sticks out 1” from the front of the boot. Cross-country ski boots are more like running shoes than downhill ski boots and the light weight footwear comes in ankle height or above the ankle for additional support. Classic x-c ski poles are typically recommend-ed to come to a skier’s armpits for proper length. The poles come with wrist straps for additional leverage to push off and baskets to grip the snow. Next week, we’ll cover how you can get started on cross-country skis! God Bless, Be Safe, and Great Outdoors!

HIS PART—OUR PARTby Richard De Haan
Read: Joshua 1:1-9Arise, go over this Jordan . . . . I will not leave you nor forsake you. —Joshua 1:2,5
Whenever the Lord assigns us a diffi cult task, He gives us what we need to carry it out. John Wesley wrote, “Among the many diffi culties of our early ministry, my brother Charles often said, ‘If the Lord would give me wings, I’d fl y.’ I used to answer, ‘If God bids me fl y, I will trust Him for the wings.’”
Today’s Scripture tells us that Joshua was thrust into a position of great responsibility. No doubt the enormity of the challenge before him made him tremble with fear. How could he ever fol-low such a great leader as Moses? In his own strength it would be impossible to lead the people into the Promised Land. But along with the marching orders, the Lord gave him an as-suring promise: “I will not leave you nor forsake you” (Josh. 1:5). Then He said, “Have I not com-manded you? Be strong and of good courage; do not be afraid, nor be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go” (v.9). Such reassurances were the backing Joshua needed.
If God has given you some special work to do that frightens you, it’s your responsibility to jump at it. It’s up to the Lord to see you through. As you faithfully do your part, He will do His part.
I’ll go where You want me to go, dear Lord,O’er mountain, or plain, or sea;
I’ll say what You want me to say, dear Lord,I’ll be what You want me to be. —Brown

Why Acid-free?Question: What is acid-free, Lignin-Free, and photo safe?Answer: Acid-free means that the pH of the material is 7.0 or higher. Lignin is a natural bonding element in plants. It is what holds the wood fi bers together. It isn’t an acid but over time as it deteriorates gives off acids. Photo safe is another term they will place on packages to let you know the products are safe to use.
Question: Do these really make a difference? Answer: To an extent. 100 years from now will your scrapbook look just as it does today? Probably not, but these will help your book last longer.
Question:What about items like report cards or newspaper clippings that aren’t “Photo Safe”? Answer: You have 2 options: one, use Archival Mist. It neutralizes the acids and creates a buf-fer to protect your items. The second is to copy it using photo safe paper and ink. That way you don’t have to worry about “messing up” your original with glue, scissors, etc.
