Welcome to the November edition of BAWTRY TODAYBAWTRY TODAY.

A bumper issue this month, with additional pages to cope with the demand for space. We welcome several new advertisers, as well as many regular ones.

I am really pleased that we have a great Restaurant review, our first in some time. Turn to page 34 to read about our return visit to The White Horse Inn, Misson.

We also have several pages of money off vouchers all for local shops and services. It is great to be able to support our local businesses and even better when there is an added money saving incentive for doing so! Please do take advantage of the vouchers, if the businesses get a good response from them I am sure that we will be able to offer lots more money saving offers in the future.

The December edition will be delivered from 28th November. Please ensure that anything that you would like to be included in it is with me by Friday 12th November. The Decem-ber magazines are always very popular so don’t leave it too late to contact me if you would like to book an advert in this edition.

Best Wishes, Paula

Shop Local! Independent businesses are vital

“Between 1961 and 2007 we lost 71% of our local shops and services including post offices, banks, butchers and grocers” (The Guardian, 2007) Alarmingly, at this rate of decline, it is estimated that traditional independent retailing could be wiped out within the UK in the next 15 years.

It makes sobering reading doesn’t it? Each year, national chains displace locally owned businesses across the country leading to so-called ‘clone high streets’. Is it any wonder that people are losing their sense of community? Research conducted in mainland UK argues that if independent retailers cease to trade, communities and towns will collapse as a result of the loss of social interaction, diversity and choice

We tend to shop where we think we’ll receive the best value for our time and money. What does it matter if the business is an independent trader or a national chain? Well it matters a lot...

Independent local businesses employ a wide variety of supporting services. They hire local architects, designers, carpenters and sign makers. They probably employ a local accountant, insurance broker, web designer and solicitor.

Local retailers and distributors also tend to carry a higher percentage of locally made goods than the chains.

All this leads to the ‘local multiplier effect’ and means that every pound spent in a local business returns around three and a half times that to the community.

In contrast, a chain typically uses a minimum of local services and their profits will be exported from the local community back to their corporate HQ.

Then there is the matter of choice and diversity. A local retailer will sift through available products and stock those he feels will appeal to his customer base. A single independent retailer may have a smaller selection than a big chain but multitudes of independents actually increases diversity.

Think about it: when a few buyers from national chains dictate what reaches consumers, our free-dom of choice is eroded and it is choice which helps to create a richer, more vibrant community.

Finally we must consider our communities character. When asked to name our favourite shop we almost always cite a unique local business. It seems we love the idea of distinctive businesses with local character but forget that their survival depends on our patronage.

It really is worth supporting local businesses because every time you spend money with a local trader you are supporting the continued strength and vitality of your community. So go local! As an added incentive for residents to purchase local products and services over the next month or two, we have a variety of savings and money off vouchers for readers to use. These vouchers are repeated in all 3 of my publications this month so while not all businesses may be based in your own town/village they are all within easy reach and are all locally owned independent businesses that would benefit from your custom.

An update from Tickhill & District Lions

As winter draws closer and the days shorter we can all look forward to the upcoming events that will be sure to put a smile on your face in November and over the Festive season.

We kick things off as usual with our Bonfire and Fireworks Night at The Oak pub which this year is on Saturday 6th November. The bonfire will be lit at 5.30pm with two fireworks displays; one at 6pm and the grand finale at 6.45pm (so remember not to leave before the big finish). This continues to draw a big crowd so make sure you wrap up warm, get your spot and you can also grab a burger or hot dog to keep you going. Entrance is free but donations are encouraged and ever all the proceeds go towards very deserving causes within our community and around the world, so please come along and join in with the OOoos and AAaahs!

As usual over the festive season we’ll also be selling raffle tickets for our Grand Christmas Draw with fantastic prizes; 1st prize: city break for two, 2nd prize: Nintendo DS Lite, 3rd prize: a food hamper worth £100, 4th prize: £100 of petrol or diesel, and 5th prize: a fresh 15lb Turkey. Plus there are lots of other prizes too! Tickets will be on sale in many shops around the area (look out for the posters) and the draw will be made at 9pm on the 14th of December at The Oak pub in Tickhill. Please feel free to come along to the draw and don’t leave it too late to buy your tickets!

After the amazing sell-out success of last year we’re again selling ‘Magic Reindeer Food’ for your little ones to leave out for Santa’s reindeer. Again the food will be on sale in local shops and we’ll also be selling it on our stall at the Tickhill Christmas late night shopping event too.

Finally just to give you early warning of the dates when Santa’s Sleigh will be visiting us during December, when our smiling (and very fit) Lions will be trotting alongside to collect your kind donations and wish you a very merry Christmas. He will be in Bawtry on Friday 11th December.

MAYFLOWER ANIMAL SANCTUARY, BAWTRY.

October is here already upon us and the days are getting noticeably shorter. This year is flying by.

We held our annual sponsored dog walk in Bawtry forest on 10th October. It was a beautiful clear day and over 50 dogs and their owners came along to support this event. We would like to say a big thank you to everyone that attended and also to Sir Jack Whittaker for allowing us once again to hold this event in Bawtry forest .

Another thank you must go to Mulberries Beauticians in Retford for donating all towels that are no longer useful to them. With winter and wet and damp days approaching we can definitely find a home for them. They are also supporting us by agreeing to have a donation box in recep-tion for everyone's loose change. So thank you once again.

Good news on Kylie the little staffy that came to us with the distressing flea allergy, she has at least stopped itching and her coat is starting to grow a little. She will be on medication for a while yet but we are happy with her progress so far.

We recently held an event at Epworth show, where we were asked many times what is meant by fostering a dog or a cat. Sometimes we have animals that need that special family, like Doug, who is blind in one eye and has been in a road traffic accident. Or Murphy the Lurcher who at 10 years old is overlooked because of his age. Or an elderly cat that just needs to curl up on a knee. In these cases we would not ask for a donation for the cat or dog. We would carry out a home check to make sure all was well and safe. We would also expect the foster parents to contribute to the food bills but the Sanctuary would be responsible for all vets bills..we will also be there for any support you may need

If you feel that you could give an animal a loving home as a foster parent please call us.

Our charity shop in Manton has now been transformed into a lovely gift shop, so if you are look-ing for that special present please pop in. Or if you have any good quality unwanted gifts that you would like to donate to a worthy charity please let us know we would be very grateful. We are also looking for people to help in the shop so if you have a few hours to spare please call us.

Bonfire night will be here soon and as most people are aware this can be an atrocious time for animals, cats, dogs, rabbits, horses etc. Please think about this in advance and make any provi-sions necessary in order that your pet or anyone else’s pet isn't put under any undue stress.

If you are looking for that special pet please come along Mon-Fri we open 2-4 we close Tues and Sat & Sun we open 1-4

Please call 01302711330 or 07969203206 if you would like any further information about our Sanctuary

Sleigh bells ring from Doncaster!

Santa’s little helpers can enjoy the trip of a lifetime with new festive flights to Lapland from Doncaster’s Robin Hood Airport.

The seasonal flight will be operating from December 3 2010, where families will be able to celebrate Christmas in the Arctic wilderness for a special three night break. The trip includes a private meeting with Santa himself – with pre-sents and souvenirs for every youngster.

In addition a special Lapland day break will also be flying out from the Doncaster Sheffield Airport on December 20, with a range of winter wonderland activities such as a Husky sled journey, snow mobile trip, reindeer sleigh ride and a private meeting with Santa included.

Mike Morton, airport director said: “We are delighted to welcome the Christmas holiday season with such fantastic new winter getaways which will light up and bring smiles to many faces across the region.

“There is no better way to celebrate the wonderful festivities than escaping to such a beautiful, idyllic location - a place that everyone associates with Santa Claus and his merry little helpers. We are sure families will thoroughly enjoy a very special Christmas, with the added convenience of being able to fly from their local airport.”

The break incorporates full board accommodation in a selection of family run hotels. Prices start from £699 for an adult and £579 for a child for the three night trip, and £429 for an adult and £399 for a child for the Santa Lapland day break.

GIRLS COMPLETE SILVER AWARD

Three participants from Bawtry have completed their Silver Duke of Edinburgh Awards, following twelve months of commitment to a range of activities.

Jayne Guest (17), Lauren Glynn (17) and Alicia Prime (18), along with three other members of their team, undertook a challenging three day camping expedition in the Hope Valley, to finish the final section of their awards.

The DofE award has four sections which have to be undertaken. These are Volunteering, Skills, Physical Activity and Expedition.

Jayne and Lauren chose to help elderly people by putting on social activities for them, whilst Alicia volunteered her time in a Cancer Research Charity Shop.

Jayne studied animal welfare and looked after a pet for her skill activity, whilst Lauren developed her musical talent by playing drums and Alicia took up a new skill in pottery.

Jayne took Dance lessons and gained awards in Modern Jazz, whilst Lauren and Alicia took up Badminton to learn a new activity and improve their fitness.

All three girls, members of a team of six, planned and undertook their expedition in Derby-shire, during the summer. With heavy rain on the first day, the Mam Tor ridge on the second day and a trek over Abney Moor on the last day, the team needed all their resolve to finish the expe-dition in good spirits.

Once the activities and paperwork are completed, the Award has to be approved by DMBC, before it can be claimed. The girls will now receive Certificates at the Doncaster Youth Awards Ceremony in November. The girls have been friends for several years and joined the DofE Award Group together. They have supported and encouraged each other with all their activities.

Leader, Hilary Hector, said she was delighted with their achievements and that each should be proud to gain this Nationally recognised and well-respected award. She wished them good luck in the future and hoped that each would continue on to the prestigious Gold Award.

REMEMBRANCE 2010 Every year in November we remember all those who have lost their lives in conflicts and who continue to lose their lives today. We also think of all those who have been bereaved as a consequence. This year the Retford Branch of the Royal British Legion will be remembering not only on Remembrance Sunday, but on two other occasions. On Sunday 31st October, there will be the Dedication of the Garden of Remembrance in the Market Square in Retford at 11.00 a.m. This will take the form of a short service led by Father Bill Bergin, the Legion Chaplain, followed the placing of crosses in the Garden by members of the public. On Thursday 11 November, there will be a short Act of Remembrance in the Market Square, starting at 10.45 a.m. – this has been organised by Ken Hoddy who will give further details – please contact him on 01777 706310. On Sunday 14 November, Remembrance Sunday, there will be a Service of Remembrance in the Market Square, starting at 10.30 a.m. During this Service, wreaths will be laid and the Two Minute Silence kept. This year we are asking schools in Retford if they would like to make a poppy on behalf of their school and lay it at the same time. We will also have roses for young people to lay in remembrance of those lost in Iraq and Afghanistan. We hope that there will be as large a turn out as last year. Further information – Ann Hickman 01777 818993 POPPY APPEAL 2010 Last year the Royal British Legion spent £100 million on welfare helping all those who have served and their dependants. Anyone who has served for 7 days and their dependants can come to us for help – this has been the case for the last 89 years. We hope this year in Retford that you will be able to help us continue this work, which is increasing every year. So please if you can spare an hour or two for a supermarket, do a house to house collection in your neighbourhood or just buy a poppy, we would be very grateful. For further information, please contact Ann Hickman on 01777 818993.

Austerfield Parish Council News November 2010

Welcome to the third issue of Austerfield Parish Council Newsletter published quarterly in Bawtry Today. The following items highlight council activities over the summer months:

Some excellent floral displays were on view during the judging of The Best Front Garden Competition in July with the £25 Award going to 2 Butten Meadow – congratulations!

Bawtry Carbon International Director, Mr Sudhir Tukra, reported on the recent improve-ments the company has made to alleviate noise and dust nuisance to residents. The company will continue to meet with council to keep residents informed of ongoing im-provement works.

Two new parish notice boards have been purchased with support from our Ward Coun-cillors. The boards will be in place shortly thanks to Doncaster Council’s Neighbourhood Management team and will provide a resource for residents’ community news in addi-tion to parish council items.

Potential funding sources have been identified to purchase and install play equipment on the Recreation Field as the next step in the development of the field. Any residents, particularly with young children, who would like to help develop these plans, please contact one of your Parish Councillors.

Council appointed a new Parish Clerk, Sue Scott, in August. If you want to raise any issue with the Parish Council please see below for Sue’s contact details.

The next Parish Council Meeting will take place on Monday 8th November 2010 at 6.45pm in the Field Study Centre were residents are very welcome to attend.

Clerk to the Council, Sue Scott, Gibdyke House, Misson, Doncaster, DN10 6EL. Tel: 01302 711887 E-mail: [email protected]
