Melling timing gears & kits come with clear ly visible timing marks to simplify in stal la tion and to assure valve action pre cise ly timed to en-gine builders’ specifi cations. The crown-shaved profi le of Melling timing gear teeth equalizes heavy loads across the face of the teeth. This design reduces the danger of unusual wear or damage to tooth edges caused by uneven loading and assures longer life. Crown shaving also compensates for pos- si ble slight misalignment or defl ection of cam and crank shafts, which can cause excessive or un even wear.
Melling’s OEM replacement camshafts are en gi neered to meet or exceed OEM specifi ca-tions. Melling cam shafts are made of cast iron or steel for increased strength & durability.•NOTE: New Melling lifters should be installed with any new cam shaft. Worn lifters can cause premature cam shaft failure.

PEL2000OIL EXTRACTORThe PELA 2000 is a scaled down version of our popular PELA 6000. With all the same convenient features, simply pump 5 to 10 times in a row to create a powerful vacuum. Then watch the oil drain neatly into the calibrated container. The PELA 2000 is designed for those who have small jobs but don’t want to pay the higher prices of our bigger pumps. With a capacity of 2.5 litres, it’s ideal for small 4-stroke outboard engines up to 50 HP (depending on make), sailboats with small diesel engines (9 HP to 18 HP), and PWCs with 4-stroke engines. For homeowners with lawnmowers and other power equipment, this value priced tool is essential.
PEL6000OIL EXTRACTORThis is our most popular oil changer. It has the power of our Big PELA but comes in a compact, more affordable model. Simply pump 10 to 20 times in a row to create a powerful vacu-um. Sturdy, see-through container (6.0 litres) neatly captures the oil. The calibrated walls lets the user know how much oil has been removed. A pour spout is included to help emptying. Pump is removable for easy stor-age. Ideal for consumer use. Sold around the world since 1998.
PEL650BIG OIL EXTRACTOROur original pump, since 1996. A long time favorite among technicians because of its power and durability. Requires just 4 to 15 strokes in a row to create a powerful vacuum. The integrated container (6.5 litres) then neatly captures the oil preventing messy spills. The see-through, calibrated container lets the user know how much oil has been extracted. A built-in fl oat switch automatically stops extraction as soon as capacity is reached. A pour spout facilitates emptying. With the pump housed inside the container, the Big PELA is a durable, maintenance free unit. Capacity: 6.5 litres (6.87 qts)
PEL14KPRO 14 OIL EXTRACTORWe are pleased to fi nally offer a heavy duty unit for big en-gines. With a 14 liter capacity, the PELA Pro 14 is the largest on the market. It comes with a new improved, patent pending mechanism. For durability, the pump unit is also housed inside the container. Just pump 20 to 25 times in a row to cre-ate a powerful vacuum and then watch the oil drain into the see-through, calibrated container. An internal fl oat switch shuts off extraction auto-matically when full. Ideal in the workshop for servicing large engines or several smaller ones before emptying. Ideal for boats with large diesels and those with twin engines.

How do I determine the correct starter rotation for my engine?
Left Hand Engine RotationThis is the most common engine rotation found on today’s marine engines. This is the same rotation as automotive engines. Use these charts to determine the correct starter rotation needed.
Right Hand Engine RotationThis is not very common on today’s marine engines. This is the opposite rotation of automotive engines.
Engine Rotation Viewed From The Flywheel End
Another way to determine the starter rotation is to inspect the chamfer on the starter drive gear. The bevel will always be on the trailing edge.
The Chevy engine went through many changes over the years, the fi rst change was in 1980:Engines 1979 and earlier had a port side dipstick on I/O engines. From 1980 to 1985, the engine had a starboard side dipstick on I/O engine. Most engines had a two piece rear main seal (Figure A), perimeter bolt valve covers (Figure B), and a 12.75 inch diameter fl ywheel until the end of 1985. The 1986 engine was all by itself for the fol low ing rea sons. The engine still had a starboard side dipstick and perimeter bolt valve covers (Figure B), but it had a one piece rear main seal (Figure C). This also changed the fl ywheel diameter to 14 inches (exceptions for Volvo) and the bolt ing pattern of any ac ces so ries that bolt to the same bolts that hold the fl ywheel on, ie. Engine Couplings etc. In 1987, another round of changes were made, this time to the top of the engine. Engines now have Center Bolt valve covers (Figure D), and the intake man i fold bolt angle has changed on the four center intake bolts, thus making all previous intakes not ap pli ca ble to the ‘87 and newer engines.
When did they change the Small Block Chevy En gine?
Dry-Joint Exhaust is an innovative exhaust system featured on all Mercruiser V6 and V8 models through 425 horsepower, dry-joint exhaust systems virtually eliminate the opportunity for water, either from condensation or from seawater, to fi nd its way into critical engine components. While externally the V6 and small-block V8 systems appear very similar to previous designs, the real new technology is hidden inside. The internal geometry is totally new and was developed using computer-aided model-ing to contour the surfaces, reducing exhaust restriction while ensuring precise temperature control of crucial areas. Take a look at the results in the illustration to the right. Notice Those Two Red Rings? Those are special 4-lip high temperature silicone seals that secure the coolant fl ow between the exhaust mani-fold and the elbow. Check out the distance between those seals and the large open area where the exhaust fl ows. There’s no way that coolant can fi nd its way into the engine here. Those seals are mated to an engineered Grafoil® gasket that is made up of a stain-less steel core bonded to a special graphite material that provides a precision high temperature seal for the exhaust gases. The cone that you see on the gasket around the large opening is called a “turbulator ring”. Its job is to help catch any small droplets of water condensation that may collect downstream in the exhaust system that try to fi nd their way back to the engine, where they can wreak havoc on internal engine parts. You might say: “Con-densation! That means water! If the exhaust system is so well-sealed, where does that come from?”Here’s the answer - water in the exhaust of a marine engine can come from two sources: one is the water that exits the engine through the exhaust system to help reduce the temperature of the exhaust gases and the exhaust system. The water also works to help reduce the noise level of the exhaust. The other source of water is the water created from complete combustion. Yes, water is a product of combustion and can condense on the inside of the exhaust system when the inside surface temperatures are not high enough to evaporate it.So, these exhaust manifolds and elbows are designed to run at higher temperatures on the in-side, while still staying as cool as possible on the outside. There are still times when condensa-tion could form, like when the engine is warming up or when operating in very cold water for long periods at idle. The “turbulator ring” is for that extra margin of insurance.
What rotation engine do I have?Engine rotation is viewed from the fl ywheel of the engine, clockwise would be Right Hand, and coun-ter-clock wise would be Left Hand.
Since you usually cannot see the fl ywheel with the engine in the boat it can also be determined from the front of the engine. If you are looking at the front of the engine at the belts and pulleys, clockwise would be Left Hand, and counter-clockwise would be Right Hand. Never rely on propeller rotation to determine engine rotation. ALL I/O ENGINES ARE LEFT HAND!

The round Crusader gaskets have tabs that stick up above the parts for easy identifi cation. The “one hole” gasket has 2 tabs and is always used at the elbow. The “three hole” gasket has only 1 tab and is always used at the bottom of the risers to allow maximum water fl ow to fi ll the manifold and riser. Note: When using the stainless blocking plate use 2 gaskets and sand wich the stainless plate between them. Since the plate blocks the fl ow of water either gasket can be used.

CRUSADER
CHRYSLER
318 - 360Chrysler used only two styles of gasket for the 318 - 360, OSC826 manifold. One blocks all wa-ter from passing through it. This gasket is used to separate raw water and anti-freeze as well as to allow water to fl ow out of the manifold from a fi tting rather than through the gasket. The other gasket has a 3/4” hole at the top to allow the raw water to fl ow out through the gasket to the riser or elbow and go over board. This gasket is used most commonly, and is the gasket used at the fi xed riser and elbow. Many installers look at the mating surface of the manifold, elbow and riser and see the water passages in the parts. They incorrectly assume they got the wrong gasket and alter it to look like the gasket surface. There is only one 3/4” hole at the top of the manifold to allow water to fl ow. The rest of the gasket is blocked intentionally. This is correct. Do not modify the gasket. The one hole in the top of the gasket is designed to allow the manifold to fi ll and remain full of water. By cutting the gasket the manifold will not cool properly. Also see next page for proper use of the Water Distribution Tube.
CHRYSLER Installation of Water Distribution TubesThe water distribution tube is required when the engine sits on a steep angle. Its purpose is to removethe air that gets trapped in the manifold, causing the manifolds to run hot and steam. It also in-creases thecirculation of the cooling water in the manifold. The tube is inserted from the exhaust outlet end and is al most as long as the manifold itself. Neither tube has holes drilled in them. The OSC557 has two slots cut into one end, the OSC424 has no slots. Do Not fi ll from the front of the manifold as this will send the water down the tube and overboard without cooling the manifold. Block the water fl ow at the front of the man i fold with a ¾” pipe plug or a OSC106 front plate on the OSC826. Fill the manifold from the lowest ¾” IPT port on the bottom rear inlet of the manifold. Filling the manifold from the lowest point forces all air into the water distribution tube that would otherwise be trapped in the manifold. This allows the manifold to stay full of water and to circulate fully. The water then fl ows out of the manifold via the water distribution tube into the exhaust riser or elbow to be discharged over board. Chrysler 318 - 360 manifold OSC826

All of the trapped air is forced into the water dis tri bu tion tube at the highest point in the manifold.
Water exits from the manifold through the water distribution tube to the riser and / or elbow to go overboard, forcingout all trapped air.
OSC557 Copper Tube is inserted from the lowest end, inside the manifold.
Water goes in at the bottom of the manifold, fi lling from the lowest point.

OSCO Center Riser Plumbing TipsPLUMBING: The following plumbing tips cover the OSCO generic center riser style manifolds (OSCFLCR818, OSCCVCR818 onpage 87). The diagram shows one side only, plumb the other side the same. The correct way to plumb manifolds varies betweenengine manufacturers. You should consult your engine manufacturer’s service manual for the correct plumbing of your manifold.Generally speaking fi ll your manifolds from the lowest point, and remove the water from the highest point (overboard through theriser, or through a fi tting in the manifold). Below are several typical ways to plumb an OSCO center riser style manifold:“ONE HOSE” STYLE — The water hose is connected to the manifold at its lowest point and water exits overboard through theriser. All other tapped holes are plugged. Use an open gasket between the manifold and riser. Be sure that the small rectangularhole in the gasket is opposite the exhaust outlet end of the riser.“TWO HOSE” STYLE — One water hose is connected to the manifold at its lowest point and one to the riser. All water exitsoverboard through the riser. All other tapped holes are plugged. Use an open gasket between the manifold and the riser. Be surethat the small rectangular hole in the gasket is opposite the exhaust outlet end of the riser.“THREE HOSE” STYLE — Recirculating system, preheats water in the manifolds — Two water hoses are connected to themanifold and one to the riser. Water enters the lowest point on the manifold and exits the manifold through a hose at the highestpoint of the manifold (GM or Ford, see drawing). This water recirculates through the engine to be distributed by the thermostathousing, to the risers and exits overboard. All other tapped holes are plugged. Use a block off gasket between the riser and themanifold.“THREE HOSE STYLE” — Closed cooling or fresh water cooling, antifreeze in the engine and manifolds. — Two water hosesare connected to the manifold and one to the riser. Anti-freeze enters the lowest point on the manifold and exits the manifoldthrough a hose at the highest point of the manifold (GM or Ford, see drawing). Raw water enters the riser at the front and exitsoverboard. All other tapped holes are plugged. Use a block off gasket between the riser and the manifold. Spacer installation —Use an open gasket between the spacer and the riser. Be sure that the small rectangular hole in the gasket is opposite theexhaust outlet end of the riser. Use an open gasket between the manifold and the spacer. Be sure that the small rectangular holein the gasket is opposite of the one installed at the riser. This allows for water to fl ow through from the manifold into the spacerand through the spacer into the riser.
