The good-looking 4-year- old gelding, guided by Mark Bugni, topped the Lucky Dog BFA Futurity in Texarkana for $5,462. Roc is by Lane’s homegrown stallion JL Sirocco, a son of Dash Ta Fame out of Solara, a barrel racing money earning daughter of Band Of Azure. His dam is former barrel horse Cut No Slack, the first mare Lane had ever owned by her stallion Red (TB). In December, Lane won the Future Fortunes Sire Slot at the BFA Juvenile, making him eligible for the Future Fortunes Trifecta. The storied incentive program is offering a $100,000 bonus to the horse that can win the Sire Slots at the BFA Juvenile, Old Fort Days Futu- rity and Fortunes Round at the BFA Futurity. With Lane busy with breeding and foaling season, Bugni got the call for the Old Fort Days Futurity. “I got him about three weeks ago,” said Bugni, a fellow Montanan now residing in Wanette, Okla. “She knew she was going to be heavy into breeding session, so she decided to send him to me and have me go after that second leg at Fort Smith. She went ahead and paid him up into Fort Smith and Diamonds & Dirt, and it’s been up to me to figure out where to go and how to get in tune with him, so that’s what we’ve been doing.” Bugni took Roc to three local jackpots to get a feel for the quick, powerful gelding, and getting their timing together on the first bar- rel took some doing, largely due to the communication differences between Lane’s and Bugni’s riding styles. “The first one I went to, I got really long at the first barrel,” recalled Bugni. “He just didn’t read me at all. It was like the barrel wasn’t even there! He sizzled the second and third like a pro, and he still finished fifth in the 2D. I regrouped at home and did some slow work to get him listening to me a little bit more and under- standing my cues. We went to our second barrel race. I cued him a little sooner at the first, but he still didn’t quite listen to me so I had to give him a couple good checks with the reins and he still got by it by half a stride. He worked the other two really well and placed just out of the 1D. The third barrel race, I felt like I had it, but I still didn’t get that first barrel 100 percent. The ground was a little bit treacherous so he was overworking trying to stand up and he still was like 11th out of 150 horses. I felt like his effort was just tremendous, so I called up Jill and asked her if I could enter him in Texarkana.” At Texarkana, Bugni and Roc won the opening round in 14.7. “The first round he felt like he was going three-quarters speed to that first barrel and I was trying to read if he was going to pay at- tention to me or not, or if I was going to have to give him a couple of checks with the reins. When he got to the barrel he kind of cowed away from it, which caught me off guard and I pitched the reins and smooched to him and he just gunned it from there. I felt really good that he could make a mistake like that and still win the round,” he said. They came back in the second round and placed second with a 14.728 to win the average. “In the second round, we finally understood each other at the first barrel,” Bugni said. “He nailed it perfectly. I was still thinking about how good our first barrel was when I got half way across the pen and it dawned on me to get riding. I smooched up on him and he kicked up four gears and I didn’t really need him to do that and it put us a little past his normal rate spot. I thought ‘Oh no! Diamonds & Dirt Underway The 5th Annual Diamonds & Dirt is coming up this week March 7-March 13, 2016 at the Brazos County Expo in Bryan, TX. In what has become a cornerstone event for the barrel racing industry; it features one of the biggest added money futurity, derby and Open 5Ds in the country. It also features the Diamond Jubilee Futurity Slot Race on Wednesday night which will pay out a $100,000 to the winner. Over 1,300 horses and riders will take up residence for the next week, filling the venue beyond capacity. With over 1,500 competi-tive runs being conducted from Wednesday morning thru Sunday evening, that puts a horse and rider running barrels approximately every 1 minute! Ross Wright, show secretary, points out that this is the largest event the Brazos County Expo sees all year in barrel competition. “Diamonds & Dirt is now the third largest barrel competition in the United States. That means there’s a lot going on out here this week.” Notable riders competing in the 2016 DDBHC include World Champions Brittany Pozzi of Victoria, Latricia Duke of Millican and Jolene Montgomery of Dawson, along with 19 year old phe-nom WPRA Rookie of the Year Jackie Ganter of Abilene. “Bryan Expo is the place to be in March if you want to compete with the best,” said Latricia Duke, co-founder of Diamonds & Dirt Barrel Horse Classic. “Diamonds & Dirt is a premier barrel futurity in the state of Texas and known around the world as a first class event.” The 5th annual DDBHC will benefit K9s4Cops charity which purchases and places professionally trained K9s with law enforce-ment agencies across the country. Locally, proceeds from DDBHC will also benefit the Children’s Museum of Brazos Valley, the Ron-ald McDonald House Charities and The Urban Interface. The Diamonds & Dirt Barrel Horse Classic offers free admission to spectators. The competition kicks of Wednesday and runs through Sunday; it is open to the public and has a full trade show and variety of activi-ties for everyone to enjoy. If you can’t be there in person, a webcast of the whole event will be available at www.321ActionVideo.com. Below is the Schedule Highlights. Prca rodeos Set attendance records The winter rodeo season has been a fruitful one for many PRCA rodeos and their committees. Several rodeos have reported record attendance, including the richest regular-season rodeo of the year - the San Antonio Stock Show & Rodeo. Total attendance on the grounds at the 2016 San Antonio Stock Show & Rodeo was estimated at 2,034,497 - far exceeding the previ-ous attendance record by an astounding 17 percent. Add the 91st La Fiesta de los Vaqueros to the growing number of rodeos that have broken attendance records in 2016. The Tucson, Ariz., rodeo is always an attraction, and that was certainly true this year. “We don’t have all of our final numbers in yet, but it looks very much like we did (set a record),” said rodeo General Manager Gary Williams. “Our arena seats 11,000 and this year we topped 60,000,” he said. The San Angelo (Texas) Rodeo saw a large number of patrons come through the turnstiles as well. Nine of the 11 rodeo per-formances were sold out, and the other two, during Super Bowl weekend, still drew large crowds. Tom Thompson, a member of the San Angelo committee, estimates that nearly 54,000 people attended the 11 rodeo perfor-mances Feb. 5-19. --Courtesy of www.prorodeo.com
hit the breaks so hard, he threw me up over the saddle horn and got me off balance, but he sucked back and finished the turn and went on and smoked the third.” At Texarkana, Lane and Bugni were able to negotiate with Terra Bynum so that Roc will be running in Bynum’s slot in the Dia-monds & Dirt Slot Race on Wednesday night. Bugni will also be running his 5-year-old futurity horse JL Fourtafame, a Dash Ta Fame gelding out of BF Silver Charm, by Takin On The Cash, in the slot race too. JL Takin On Fame was also raised by Lane and is a full brother to two other horses successfully trained by Bugni—the late JL Third Times A Charm and multiple Southeastern Circuit Finalist JL Takin On Fame, owned by Sally Young. While Bugni clearly has a successful past with horses from Lane’s program, Roc has him completely sold on JL Sirocco. “He’s the kind of stud that just takes your breath away,” said Bugni, who actually was around the stallion some as a foal. “Once I saw the video of Siracco cruising around the barrels and saw the moves he was making, it’s cool to see him passing those moves on to his colts.” Roc, too, is good marketing for the stallion. Bugni said the colt is extremely powerful and extremely quick. He’s also keenly aware of where the barrel are. “He keeps himself really clean around a barrel. I feel like there’s no way I’m going to hit one unless he slips. It’s an incredible feel,” he said. “I told Jill that I just loved that colt. He just so solid and so smooth. She told me that he was super powerful. She said I might want to ride him half-speed and not push him too awful fast, but it’s like, ‘Wow, once you feel it…there’s more there than you realize.’ It’s fun too because once you’re comfortable with it, it’s so fun. He can rate as a fast as he can get up and power away from one. He’s really good about reading the barrels and the ground. He’s really good minded, sweet. He’s just a winner. He’s got that attitude and the
ability. He’s the complete package.” Although he regrets not purchasing Roc when he had the chance when the colt was just getting broke, Bugni is not going to make the same mistake twice. He’s got two Sirocco’s coming down from Montana in a few weeks, one is out of a Shawne Bug mare and the other is out of a daughter of Lanes Leinster. Bugni wanted to thank his sponsors for their continued support and Lane for trusting him with such an amazing horse that she had already proven was a talented individual. “She sent me something that she knew was valuable and trusted me to do the job and take care of him,” he said, “so I just wanted to thank her for giving me that kind of opportunity.”

By Tanya randall Alexa Lake, a 22-year-old real estate agent, and her tough gelding Sure Down Dash (“Viper”) had a great first weekend of March, winning the pro rodeos in Bay City and Glen Rose, Texas, for combined earnings of $2,955. She currently sits 22nd in the WPRA World Standings with $10,884. She started out running in Bay City in a Thursday night perfor-mance and finished up in the last performance at Glen Rose on Saturday night. The course at Bay City is rather challenging in that the super, small pattern is square to the arena, but the alleyway is in the corner. Riders had the option to run from the gate or walk-in and set up. For those on left-barrel first horses, the first barrel was directly in the center of the alley. “The last time I ran my horse there was two years ago and he ran to the right, and we won fourth,” explained Lake. “We ran from the alleyway and never set up. This time, running from the left, the only barrel you can see from the alley is your first barrel and it’s dead center to you. You have no choice but to walk-in and set up. “With Viper, I was a little hesitant of doing that this year, but he let me walk up him in. I didn’t take long to set him up. I stayed toward the left because I can run him from anywhere as long as I run him to his point, so that’s what I did. He nailed his first barrel and came back really strong and snappy on the back side of it, and it immediately had me setup straight for my pocket at my second. If you hang on your first barrel, you only have a stride to get over for your second, so you don’t have a lot of pocket. “Coming home, I knew it would take me too many strides to back to the alley so left the third and ran straight to the bucking
chutes and when I crossed the timer, I eased him over to the alley. It went by really fast because it’s really little. Your timing has to be per-fect there because you don’t have enough space to make mistakes and recover from them.” Glen Rose was a completely different set up as the pattern was

much longer than it had been in the past. “They’ve really set the barrels way up the pen and they made themselves a big, long pattern,” said Lake. “I figured that he was going to be really ratey on me because we just came out of running in a little bitty pen, but he wasn’t. He was really free and ran to his spots. It was a really smooth easy run. He made it a lot of fun.” Making the Glen Rose win extra special was having her hauling partner Sioux Smith place second behind her. “It was her first pro rodeo in two years,” Lake said. “People that haul together always say they want to win first and second, and we got it, so that was pretty special.” Lake, who lives in the Bryan-College Station area, grew up in Richmond, a suburb of Houston. Very much the city girl growing up, she took riding lessons and rode at the polo club but also took figure skating lessons and was a cheerleader. She became interested in barrel racing after watching it at a rodeo. “I started from the bottom,” she said. “I took lessons and bor-rowed and leased a horse. It was just something that I wanted to learn how to do and my parents found me a way to do it.” Lake’s mother Phyllis was her biggest supporter. “She’s been my biggest fan, my biggest critic and my biggest spon-sor,” she said. “She’s been there from the beginning. None of this would even be possible if it wasn’t for her. I owe everything to her.” They purchased Viper, a 2005 brown gelding by Down Home Dash out of Sheza Go For Sure, by Heza Go For Three, from Al-lison Veale of Fort Worth more than four years ago. The intentions all along was for Viper to make a rodeo horse. Not long after she got Viper he got hurt when he escaped his stall and slid on concrete, injuring his stifle. When Lake went back to running Viper the gelding wasn’t consistent, so she made the decision to switch directions with him. “When I brought him back, it wasn’t the same,” she said. “He’d make one or two good runs, but if you tried to make any more in a
row, he would shut down and quit working. I had to change some-thing, so I switched him to the left.” The duo made the Cowboys Professional Rodeo Association Finals in 2014 and started hauling to the pro rodeos that October.“He did really well at the pro rodeos last October and I was able to get into the bigger winter rodeos,” she said. “He won second at San Antonio last year and did well at Fort Worth and Austin. It was until last year that I went for a full year and tried to make the Finals.”Lake, who finished 21st in the WPRA World Standings last year, gets to make her debut at her hometown rodeo this week—Rodeo Houston. “It’s always been one of my favorite rodeos to attend,” she said. “I’m really excited to get to compete there. I’m thrilled my whole

Barrel Racing Report Schedule - Send Your Events to [email protected]
Headin’ For Home by Sherry Morrison Triple M (Mike Morrison Ministries)
If you are reading this, you are probably a barrel racer or know one. You know how to talk about your run, your horse, your feeding program, your breeding program, barrel races, futurities
or rodeos. Let’s say that you just got a new horse. And let’s say that the new horse isn’t in shape and doesn’t even know the barrel pattern. So….would you take that horse to a jackpot next weekend and run it in a barrel race? No. You would begin to get him in shape, check his vaccinations, teeth, shoes and walk the barrel pattern. You would take it easy. You would make his job easy and there wouldn’t be a lot of pressure on him. You would use the wealth of experience you have and you would guide him from his early beginnings to the finished product that you want. When new situations come up, you are there to support him through them. That’s EXACTLY how Jesus does us! When we get born again, He doesn’t expect us to be perfect. He expects us to learn about Him and grow in knowledge by spending time with Him. He came as a man and walked on this earth as a man, experiencing everything
that we ever will, so He knows exactly what we are up against every day. He has been there, done that and won! He is our example, our leader. He knows the way. And as we walk with Him every day, we will grow and mature. Just like our horses. When they spend time with, and learn from, us, there will come a day when they will easily run on different ground in new arenas and think nothing of it! You have taught them how. And Jesus will teach us how to live on this earth in vic-tory!
