Brazile Adds Cowboy Christma Record To Résumé When Trevor Brazile has a Cowboy Christmas run this domi-nating – breaking Ty Murray’s earnings record with $39,993 – it is hard not to start thinking the unthinkable. As in? Is he capable of a Grand Slam, winning the team roping, tie-down roping, steer roping and all-around gold buckles in the same year?
He won his second Triple Crown a year ago, missing the unprec-edented slam only because he fi nished second in the steer roping standings, and he knows just exactly how diffi cult it is to get every-thing to align for that sort of parlay. “I haven’t thought about (the slam) that much,” Brazile said. “That’s how up and down rodeo is. I was probably $30,000 behind in the calf roping this year from where I have been the past few years at this point. So, you just never know. “That’s why the mental game is so important. You’ve got to be optimistic and think you’re going to win more than you ever won any other time of the year. It’s a give- and-take deal. You can’t always win the same rodeos, but there are plenty of chances to win at other ones out there.” Brazile led all tie-down ropers with earnings of $28,089 over the Fourth of July week commonly known as “Cowboy Christmas” and made another $11,904 with team roping partner Patrick Smith to break the record for total earnings of $37,630 set by Ty Murray in 1999. Brazile certainly didn’t stint on the travel last week, going from Reno, Nev., to Canada for stops in High River, Airdrie and Ponoka, before heading off to Prescott, Ariz., Molalla, Ore., St. Paul, Ore., Red Lodge, Mont., Livingston, Mont., and back to Ponoka. He fi nished up the week with the win at the Cody Stampede on the Fourth of July. “Cody really topped off the week,” Brazile said. “It always helps to fi nish off the week strong. I won almost $10,000 there. “I had such good help this week that I didn’t have to get on a lot of other (peoples’) horses. I owe a lot to Chad Baker; he’s helped me for the last four or fi ve years. He drove his tail off so I could have horses where I needed them. It helps me not have to get on horses I’m not familiar with. Chad went to high school with me and has been my best friend for no telling how long. He knows things about me people shouldn’t know.”The complete Top 10: 1 Trevor Brazile (TR/TD) $39,993; 2 Wesley Silcox (BR) $29,186; 3 Taos Muncy (SB) $26,489; 4 Shane Hanchey (TD) $25,121; 5 Lindsay Sears (GBR) $23,838; 6 Curtis Cassidy (SW/TD) $22,146; 7 Cody DeMers (BB) $20,192; 8 Clint Cannon (BB) $20,155; 9 Shane Proctor (BR) $18,987; 10 Steve Woolsey (BR) $18,953. There were 59 contestants who earned more than $10,000 during the week.

NOTES: After a less than stellar run at Sundre, AB the week before the Fourth run, Real Claim To Fame got a tune up going into Ponoka. Well the tuning paid off big time with a fi rst round win at Ponoka by .25 seconds and an arena record. She then returned in the Champi-onship Round to win 3rd and 1st in the average. Then her and Real Claim To Fame got a barrel in the bonus round but still grabbed an additional $1,000. That brought their total for Ponoka to a whopping $14,716. Add that to a good run at Cody that grabbed them 9th place and another $1,496, a 10th place at Airdrie for another $813 and their Fourth total rings in at $17,025! Even more impressive is the fact that Idaho Sue Smith and her traveling partner Sammi Bessert only went to four rodeos. Going to Airdrie and Ponoka in Canada, then they snuck down to Cody and Livingston before heading back to Ponoka for the Championship Round. Their easy schedule worked out just about right because in addition to Smith and Claimer win-ning $17,025, Sammi Bessert and Terrible Tommy Twist pulled in an additional $10,948 bringing the rig total to over $28k! That is $7k per rodeo for that rig. Real Claim To Fame gets better with more runs so he should be primed and ready for Vernal this Thursday, then Smith is off to Calgary for the second set. NOTES: Lindsay Sears is back in a familiar position, #1 money earner on the weekend; however after Round 9 at last year’s NFR she didn’t know if it would happen for a while if at all again. Martha (Sugar Moon Express) had severely injured her stifl e, similar to someone blowing out their knee in football. Sears didn’t know when or if Martha would be running barrels again at the level they were used to. Sears took Martha home after the NFR and her vet started trying a variety of different new treatments. The injury was such they knew it was going to take some measure of a miracle for her to get back running so they tried it all. Those treatments mixed with rest worked out just right. After over 4 months of stall rest at night and a 40 x 40 pen during the day her stifl e ultrasounded clean and her exercise program was set in motion. First, just walking for minutes at a time on a walker in April, then by the middle of April she was on the walker an hour a day, then an hour and a half by the fi rst of May. The fi rst week of May, Sears was on Martha’s back starting slowly and continually working up to more exercise. Her rehab included lots of walking but all that time seems to be paying off in spades! Martha’s fi rst rodeo back was in Sisters, OR, their fi rst run at Reno was their third run back and then they went straight into Cowboy Christmas. Sears used her remuda of horses to her advantage over the Fourth, riding Moe (Ima Guy Of Honor) at Greeley (total earnings $4,172), Martha (Sugar Moon Express) at Ponoka, Livingston, and Cody (total earnings $19,666) and DJ Nick Bar at Williams Lake and Airdrie (tipped barrels). Last year, Sears was the high money earner for the Fourth ($21k) using a similar travel schedule and fl ying between the rodeos. Again the plan worked to perfection. Even though Sears kept a rigorous schedule, her horses were well rested and ready to the tune of $23,838 in earnings and the #1 money position over the Fourth for the second year in a row. Her earnings jumped her from #12 in the WPRA World Pro Rodeo Standings to #5. SPONSORS: Panhandle Slim, Morinda Care, Formula 707, Ariat Boots, High River Autoplex and RV, Circle M Trailers“Thanks for all their support.”
NOTES: Ever have one of those days where nothing goes right? You know, the car won’t start, you have a bad meeting at work, you sit in the doctor’s offi ce for an hour before they fi nally get to you. Well, about a month ago Angie Meadors had one of those days when the owners of Fantasia Fame decided to go a different direction with her. Meadors was entered in rodeos and didn’t know what she was going to ride. Well, with a little help from Bo Hill and Latricia Duke (Heza Bug Leo’s trainer), owners Trip & Callie Duperier had Me-adors come down to see if she could get along with futurity & derby standout Heza Bug Leo (Bugs). Heza Bug Leo has placed in or won nearly every futurity and derby there is over the last couple years and was biding his time waiting for his next mission. After one quick breeze through the barrels Duke knew Meadors and Bugs would be a match. Meadors made a plan to take him to North Platte, NE and Weatherford, TX and if he could place then they would head to Reno and then on to the Fourth of July rodeos. At Weatherford, Bugs pulled the check from the last hole, so they were on to Reno and the big time. After that, Meadors fi gured she would wait until Greeley to see if they could hit the road to Calgary and the rest of the summer. The experiment is going well! Meadors and Heza Bug Leo won 3rd at Cody and 2nd in the Average in Greeley on the way to a total haul of $15,870! With those earnings, Meadors went from being nowhere in the World Standings to #18 and now they are hot on the trail to another NFR. “I am just so very thankful to Heza Bug Leo’s owers Trip & Callie Duperier, his trainer Latricia Duke, and Bo Hill for giving me this opportunity.” Meadors said. “I think it says a lot about Latricia’s training that a 6 year old who has never been to rodeos can go out and run with the big boys like this.” Now Meadors is on her way to run in the fi rst set at Calgary and then on to Casper, Sheridan, and then Cheyenne. In just ten runs, Heza Bug Leo has now made $17k. Interestingly, an-other Duke trainee, Yeah Hes Firen won $13,222, so on the weekend Duke trained horses won a little over $29k!

NOTES: When a team like Sherry Cervi and Tammy Fischer buddy up for the Fourth of July Rodeos you expect to see quite a bit of winning, but maybe not to the tune of the $30,000 that the two of them won. Cervi and Fischer entered 8 rodeos together, they traveled in their own rigs but entered together. Cervi and Fischer both went to Ponoka, Airdrie, Molalla, Eugene, St Paul and Cody and Fischer snuck away to Red Lodge as well. Cervi placed along everywhere she went but her and MP Meter My Hay’s (Stingray) win at St Paul, OR for $7,102 pushed their earnings up to $16,618. Cervi and MP Meter My Hay were accompanied by another homebred horse MP A Man With Roses (George) as a backup, Cody Hannah doing the driv-ing, and her normal passel of pets that keeps the road like home. It just shows that when two veterans team up for a Fourth of July run, they bring their own fi reworks! Cervi is now headed off to Vernal, Laramie, Sheridan, Casper and Colorado Springs.

THE RUNDOWN: SARAH MCDONALDHORSE: Fame Fling N BlingGrey Roan Gelding, 5 years old, 15 hh, 1100 lbs.HORSE HISTORY: My Uncle Stephen and his friend Larry D Ammons bought her at the Fulton Performance Horse & Production Sale in Valentine, Nebraska as a yearling. BIT: Lifter Bit, no headgear SADDLE: Mike Green FrontierPAD: Professionals Choice Charmayne James SMXLEG GEAR: Legacy front and back bootsGRAIN: TributeSUPPLEMENTS: UltrabloomHAY: Hay in the morning, Alfalfa at nightADDITIONAL HORSE CARE: Aluminum on all 4, Occasional chiropractic work, I give them breaks after every 3 day show and days off after a every show. I think it is important for a horse to be turned out to run and eat grass as well as be able to act like a horse. #1 TRAINING OR RIDING TRIP: My Uncle Stephen is a very good trainer and he starts my horses. I help fi nish them and haul them to the shows. We make sure that the colts are not being pressured and that they go their own speed until they show that they are ready to be advanced. I like for a horse to be broken in the face before they ever see a barrel. They usu-ally will not need any headgear. I try to keep my open horses in shape by long trotting and loping a good bit. I do not drill them at home on the barrels except for walking for trotting if needed to fi x a problem. I like for a horse to move off of my rein. I am currently riding two left handed horses, but it just ended up that they worked that way better. I have recently been working very hard at sitting up and making sure I wait until I am past the barrel to make a move. My goal this year is to make as many smooth clean runs as possible without pick-ing up any bad habits.

Headin’ For HomeHeadin’ For Home by Mike Morrison by Mike Morrison Triple M (Mike Morrison Ministries) Triple M (Mike Morrison Ministries)
Some times when you’re training a young horse, you have to back to the round pen for a refresher course in basics. It’s the same with us, too. We can get so caught up in our daily pur-
suits that we neglect the basic things for a satisfying and productive walk with God. But, you argue that you have bills and unexpected expenses to cover. Your job is so demanding, there’s health issues and your kids are giving you all sorts of grief. You are so busy with life in the world that you don’t have time for a spiritual life. Don’t forget you are a spirit! You’re a three-part person. You’re a spirit, you have a soul (mind, will and emotions), and you live in a body. It tells us in John 4:24, “God is Spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth.” That’s good because we don’t need an appointment to talk to God. We can call Him at any time and He will answer us and direct us in all our ways. If you’ve made Jesus the Lord of your life, (Romans 10:9) you’re in God’s family and heaven’s unlimited resources are yours!
Read John 14 and 15 to see how God has provided for us through Jesus Christ. Read your Bible, pray and look for a good Bible study group where you can learn and fellowship with other believers. We can help you, too, and it won’t cost you a dime. We send out teaching CDs all over the country free of charge so you can study in the privacy of your own home and in your free time. Just send your name and address to us at Box 2439, Gillette, WY 82717 to get on our mailing list. Or you can log on to www.m-m-m.org to get updated messages. Don’t wait. There’s an exciting world out there!
