Babys Blue Jeans on to Greener Pastures Valentines Day at Figure 9 Quarter Horses was a very heartbreak-ing one. Babys Blue Jeans had went on to greener pastures during the early morning hours. She had not suffered and the James vet determined her death was most likely an aneurysm. Babys Blue Jeans by Six Fols and out of Lady Bugs Martha (Lady Bug’s Moon) is the dam of Lindsay Sears great mare Sugar Moon Express (Martha). “We sure are missing our Queen of the farm who just the day before she had been running and bucking and enjoying the spring like weather. Although we are sad, we are so grateful to have owned the grand old girl and have had so much fun watching her foals do good.” said owner Kathy James or Figure 9 Quarter Horses. Babys Blue Jeans has some up and coming foals including a yearling fi lly sired by Doc O Mister Hawk owned by Jud Little, a 2011 fi lly owned by JB Quarter Horses and Brittany Pozzi has a foal being born this year by Alive N Firen. Condolences to the James family and all the connections to Babys Blue Jeans. She has impacted the industry beyond words.
Youth Awarded $28,000 in Scholarships SAN ANTONIO—Kelsey Crawford, Gage Brown, and Amy Winn were the winners of a total of $28,000 in scholarships at the 2011 San Antonio Stock Show & Rodeo 4-D Youth Barrel Races. Scholarships are given to the three youth competitors with the top fastest average times out of the two Youth 4D Barrels Races com-bined. Kelsey Crawford of Troy, Texas won a $10,000 scholarship on her horse, Flits Alibi, with a combined time of 31.264 on two runs. Crawford, who is a freshman at Troy High School, hopes to attend Tarleton after high school graduation in 2014. She said she is ex-
cited about the scholarship and the help it will provide for college. Crawford commented that “Big Al,” who is trained by Crawford’s mom, is “fast and easy to ride.” She would like to give a special thank you to her mom, Tammi Reynolds. The second highest average time of 31.341 was run by Gage Brown of Bracketville, Texas on her horse Nolan Jet, whom Brown lovingly calls “Brother.” Brown is a junior high cheerleader and on the All A Honor Roll at Jones Elementary. She already has her eye on Baylor after high school graduation in 2016. Brown said that Brother, whom she got one year ago, is “so sweet.” She is very excited and wanted to thank her family for allow-ing her to rodeo and supporting her. Brown also wanted to thank Kimbra Pierce for helping her and giving her Brother.Amy Winn of Chapman Ranch, Texas rode her horse, Troy, to win the $8,000 scholarship for her average combined time of 31.422. Winn, who shares Troy with her sister Sissy, says “he acts like a dog, and is re-ally sweet.” Although Winn has been riding for ten years, the family has only owned Troy for just two months and this was only Winn’s third run on him. She is the National High School Fifth Cham-pion Pole Bender and was a member of the 2009-2010 Two Time National Champion Team. Winn is happy that all her hard work has paid off and wanted to thank her parents, Tom and Melissa Winn, her sister Sissy, Kimmie Byler, the people at Brazos Valley Equine, and the Resistol All Around Team. This year the San Antonio Stock Show & Rodeo has commit-ted $8.5 million to education. The amount represents scholarships, grants, endowments, junior livestock auctions, Calf Scramble pro-gram, and show premiums paid to youth in the state of Texas. This brings the total amount that the organization has committed since the inception of the Scholarship Fund in 1984 to over $105 million. The San Antonio Stock Show & Rodeo is a volunteer organiza-tion that emphasizes agriculture and education to develop the youth of Texas. For more information, visit www.sarodeo.com.

THE RUNDOWN: BRITANY FLECKHORSE: Dasher Dude ‘Rootie’ Black Mare, 11 Years Old, 14.1 hands, 1000 lbs.HORSE HISTORY: I purchased her as a baby. Then I took her out to Glendive (college) with me as a 2 year old and used her as part of a colt starting class. I started her on the pattern as a 6 year old, she went to her fi rst rodeo at 7, and when she was 8 I bought my permit, at 9 I won the Badlands Circuit with her, and then last year we ended up 17th in the world. She got sick in August and I couldn’t get back on her until the last week and a half of the season, we won 2k that last week but it just wasn’t enough. BIT: Sherry Cervi short shank three piece gagHEADGEAR: NoneSADDLE: Double J Saddlery Barrel Saddle PAD: Impact Gel Saddle PadLEG GEAR: Pro Equine on all four and bell bootsGRAIN: Total Equine with some oats and Purina Senior Equine mixed wtih a sweet feed. She is a terribly picky eater so I switch back and forth between the two feeds to keep her eating on the road.SUPPLEMENTS: Platinum HAY: Grass Hay all day, fl ake of alfalfa morning and night. I even switch between different grass hays to keep her eating. ADDITIONAL HORSE CARE & SHOEING: I put the magnetic blanket on her for before I run for a few hours . I use the magnetic hock wraps as well from time to time. I keep her on Adequan and Gastrogard or Ulcerguard. I also give her Gas-trix. An hour before I run I use the Oxy-Gen Jailbreak paste. TRAINING & RIDING STYLE: I like my horses to be ratey. I don’t know why, but I have always done better on smaller horses. When I start a horse I like to take my time and not push them. Rootie was started on the pattern as a 5 year old and didn’t run at a rodeo until she was 7. That is kind of how I would like them to progress. I like starting them when they older. Even though Rootie is a rodeo horse now I still like to long trot her up and down the hills at home and do ranch work on her so she can just be a horse. To me, letting them doing ranch work keeps them mentally fresh and insures they are broke like they should be. WHAT WAS IT LIKE TO CAPUTRE THE BIGGEST WIN OF YOUR CAREER: Well, it was super exciting. It didn’t even sink in right away because they grab you right away and put you in the pickup for a victory lap and the they interview you right away so it took a while before it really hit me that I had actu-ally won San Antonio. Also, Rootie won another $1500 bonus that they gave to the winning timed event horses, so I was excited that she was recognized too. NOTES: There are lots of sayings about saving a penny here or there. Well, at San Antonio a penny won made a big dif-ference. Going into the Finals, Britany and Jill Moody were within a penny of each other Britany being a single penny in the lead. After tying in the Finals with identical times of 13.74, they split the big paycheck in the fi nals, each receiv-ing $10,889. That brought their totals to: Britany Fleck $14,519.17 and Jill Moody $14,519.16. Thus Fleck was de-clared the champion by that single little penny! A penny saved is a penny earned they say and if a penny is won at the right time, it can lead to buckles, trophies, titles and gas cards!

TELL US A LITTLE ABOUT YOUR RUNS AT SAN ANTONIO: The ground at San Antonio was inconsistent throughout the week, but that is just part of rodeo. So my fi rst run even though it felt terrible I won that day. Dolly was popping off the third a little on each of our runs at San Antonio but we managed to make the fi nals anyway. In the fi nals, they ran the bar-rels from least money won to most which allowed me to draw up good on the top of the ground and Dolly took advantage of it. We tied for the win in the round but came up a penny short of winning the title which is another part of the unpredictable sport of rodeo. WHAT ARE YOUR THOUGHTS ON YOU AND DOLLY WINNING THE WNFR AVER-AGE FOR THE 2ND TIME AND SETTING THE WNFR AVERAGE RECORD HOLD-ER? Winning the WNFR Average for the second time and setting the record for the fastest Average time at the Finals was a huge milestone for my horse. I felt like she got a chance to stomp her foot down with the best horses in history. Throughout her career, she has run against such great horses like Martha and Stingray. Dolly’s accomplishments have been overshadowed. She has won the WNFR Average now twice and made the Top 4 at Houston 3 years in a row but with the other horses out there, I felt she was a little over looked. For me personally, it is about my horse and I am really proud of my horse and I was very excited that she got a chance to put herself in the record books.

THE RUNDOWN: LINDSAY SEARSHORSE: Ima Guy Of Honor ‘Moe’ Bay Gelding, 8 Years Old, 15.1 hands, 1150 lbs.HORSE HISTORY: I bought him when he was 6 from Kim Schaefer. My good friend Courtney Cantrell found him for me. I brought him along and took my time. It took me a while to get him to fi t my style. Over the last couple years I have spent a lot of time with him working the barrels and now he is fi tting right into my program. BIT: Custom Made Phil/Carol Goostree SimplicityHEADGEAR: NoneSADDLE: Lindz Series by Shiloh Saddlery PAD: Wade Saddle PadsLEG GEAR: Polo Wraps (English/Dressage style) and over-reach bootsGRAIN: Ultium SUPPLEMENTS: Morinda Care Equine Perform, Formula 707 HAY: Alfalfa and an Alfalfa/Timothy mix ADDITIONAL HORSE CARE & SHOEING: Magnets and Ther-matex blankets, regular rim shoes. TRAINING & RIDING STYLE: My horses defi nitely have to be broke and be able to use their hind end and break at the poll to function how I want them to function. I want them to also be able to bend in their ribcage and be soft. I like them to keep their hip underneath them and drive through the barrel. I typi-cally like them to move off inside leg and inside rein pressure. I really want a broke and responsive horse to start with to fi t into my riding style, because during the run I want to be able to help them and guide them. NOTES: For those of you wondering where Martha (Sugar Moon Express) is, she was injured during the 9th Round of the WNFR and is currently recovering. Right now there is no time frame for a return to action but Lindsay is hopeful it will be soon.

His sire, Silver Ease contains the magic cross of First Down Dash (through Holland Ease) sires on Beduino mares, which produced millions and millions of runners on the fl at track. This cross is similar to horses like Corona Cartel (Holland Ease out of Chicks Beduino mare) and Royal Quick Dash (First Down Dash out of a Beduino mare). The dam side of Isle Never Back Down balances out that raw speed with crosses to several good foundation performance lines such as Easy Jet (Streakin Six and Mr Jess Perry’s sire line), Top Moon (Bugs Alive in 75’s sire line) and Sugar Bars. Although this gray gelding only manages a 68 speed index on the track he is already proving early in his 4 year old year he was born to run and turn instead!

T he wrinkled old cowboy leaned against the stockyards fence and peered through the planks at the cattle buyer. He blew a cloud of smoke and in between puffs on his cigarette, he was
gripped with a spasm of coughing. “They tell me you’re some kinda cowboy preacker,” he challenged the buyer, “Well, I’ll tell you right now. I don’t believe in all this Jesus stuff. I think there’s a heaven all right but, it’s the luck of the draw if you get to go there.” The cattle buyer smiled and turned a kind eye on the old man who obviously looked like he needed to fi nd out about salvation soon. “I haven’t got to eat yet today,” he said, “So if you’ll hang around until I settle up with these ranchers and get these semis on the road, I’ll take you down to the corner cafe and buy you supper. Then I can tell you what I know about Jesus. I can vouch for Him.” The cattle buyer is a man of deep faith with a good, solid founda-tion in the Bible so I know he did a good job of helping a person who apparently was looking for some answers and reassurance. It tells us in 1 Peter 3:15 to always be ready to give the reason for our hope and faith.
The historical evidence for Christ’s birth, life, crucifi xion and res-urrection is overwhelming. The Bible was written over a 1,600 year span by more than 40 different authors separated over hundreds of years and miles. These authors ranged from a king, political leaders, a doctor, a general to a fi sherman and a shepherd. Yet, they all say the same things and hundreds of the prophecies in the Bible have already come to pass. The Bible is the living Word of our living God. It tells us how to live the abundant life Jesus died to give us. Read it. Make Jesus your best friend and stand ready to help anyone who approaches you with questions about the Son of God, our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
