Our A Level department is the second largest provider in the Barnet and Enfield areas, which provides those who wish to progress onto Higher Education a clear route. However, for many students academic routes are not the most appropriate option; with an increasing number of vocational and professional education programmes on offer there are now other exciting pathways which lead students to greater success and fulfilment in their working life.

A recent Edge Foundation survey discovered that many young people are being actively discouraged from opting for vocational and professional education - with just a quarter of parents (27%) judging it to be worthwhile*. This is despite evidence that people who choose a practical, hands-on approach to learning are as fulfilled as people who took an academic route.**

Additionally, research from the 2012 First Steps to Wealth Report, illustrates that the lifetime earnings of a graduate are comparable with the lifetime earnings of many former apprentices - for example construction apprentices earn a total of £1,504,000 over their life time compared with £1,612,000 for a graduate,*** dispelling the fear that university degrees lead to much higher life time incomes.

The survey identified that many students (22%) are being advised by parents and schools that they are ‘too clever’ for vocational and professional education. Only half (51%) of parents encouraged their child’s choice to pursue vocational qualifications, compared to three quarters (74%) who were happy to support their child through an academic route.

This highlights a growing problem: you as parents are not getting access to the most up to date career information to allow you to make informed choices about your children’s future. We understand that parents remain the biggest influence on their children’s education (44%), so we need to equip you with the knowledge and skills to be able to give sound, informed advice about the options available for your child.

There continues to be a stigma attached to vocational and professional education which is unfounded. This country has a huge challenge ahead in ensuring that our children are equipped with the right skills to ensure a successful workforce of the future, and parents are part of that journey. It is essential that parents understand the future job market and therefore enable and encourage their children to train appropriately so they do not become another number in the endless list of university graduates that cannot secure employment.

Barnet and Southgate College recognise parents as a valuable source of information to help us provide you with the detail to make an informed choice about your child’s future education and progress. We want to know what is it you want from us in terms of advice and guidance and how we can help you to better advice your children? With this in mind we have developed various communications channels for you to engage with us.

Parent Power In September 2013 the education leaving age rose to 17 and in September 2015 it will rise again, to 18. However, post 16 education doesn’t just mean staying at school fulltime: your child can stay at school, go to college, or take up an apprenticeship or a part-time training course. They can earn money and learn new skills at the same time if they want to.

The College has a dedicated Enterprise & Employment team with a focus on commercial development and employer engagement activity across the organisation. The team builds meaningful partnerships and collaboration with local employers, local government and key stakeholders in the region.

Enterprise & Employment is responsible for:

Reed NCFEStudents at Barnet and Southgate College are given a head start in their employment search thanks to an innovative collaboration with the Reed NCFE Partnership.

The College officially opened its ‘Employment Zone’ in November 2012, within the Wood St Campus in High Barnet. The ‘REED NCFE Employment Zone’ offers each student exclusive access to local vacancies and jobs that are rarely advertised, they also receive tailored training in the skills they will need specifically for these jobs, to help ensure maximum employability once they have completed their studies at College.

Recent independent research commissioned by the Association of Colleges found that parents admit they are struggling to give the right advice to prepare young people for the world of work, the research* found:

One fifth of parents (20%) feel out of their depth advising their children about careers, whilst 32% say they only feel comfortable talking about jobs with which they are familiar.

Some parents readily admit their children are ill-prepared for work, with more than one in 10 (11%) confessing they wouldn’t even employ their own child.

82% of school teachers don’t feel they have the appropriate knowledge to advise pupils on careers; which is where coming to College can help.

72% of parents think education should be more focused on preparing young people for employment and 94% of parents want their child to have more access to employers and businesses.

The Reed NCFE Employment Zone trains students to understand how the world of work operates and they will be taught how to think and behave in a work environment, improve their interview skills and be given careers advice and work experience. In a recent survey of 1,264 employers conducted by REED, 97% put the workplace ‘mind-set’ element ahead of skills, as something they look for when recruiting. In a further study of 30,000 CVs (comparing successful CVs against unsuccessful ones), REED found that demonstrating a workplace mind-set on a CV “tripled your chances of getting and keeping” the best jobs.

Barnet Collaborative Sixth Form The Barnet Collaborative Sixth form offers the chance for a young person to move into their school sixth form whilst attending college 2-3 days a week.


It’s a one-year course and a chance to get the best of both worlds:

• Move into your school Year 12, become a sixth former

• Study a vocational course at the College 2-3 days a week

Students can select from the courses on the list at the base of the page.

You will spend the other 2-3 days at school studying the rest of your sixth form programme. This includes taking English and Maths GCSE or functional skills if you haven’t already achieved a grade C or above; getting those qualifications will really help you when applying for a job. Back at school your tutors who know you and have always supported you will be available to you as well. At College the tutors will help you in your new course, and you will have a gentle introduction to College life! You will have a chance to try out College life and take a course not available at school. It’s all planned in advance so the days at school/college are all in the school timetable.

In your programme you will have:

• A vocational course here at the College

• A personal tutor at school who will monitor your progress and support you

• A tutor on your college course who can support your studies there

• Maths and English at school and other GCSE’s too, depending on what your school has on offer

• An employability programme to help you apply for jobs, and a short work placement if available

• Careers guidance to help you choose your next step

After that one-year course you will have a lot more choices. If you enjoy the vocational study at college, and pass the course, you will be able to apply to study at the next level, or you might want to move into an Apprenticeship. Or, if you have academic skills you might want to apply to stay at school and take a L3 course. Tutors will help you decide what is best for you.

1. Apply to your school sixth form for a place by filling in a from at school.

Entry Requirements for coursesTo study at Level 1 you will need to have gained:• Good level of literacy and numeracy

• Some GCSEs grades A* E for some courses or an Entry Level qualification

To study at Level 2 you will need to have gained:• A minimum of 2 GCSEs grades at A*- D, or a

Level 1 qualification

These may need to include particular subjects and/or Level 1 literacy/numeracy

To study at Level 3 you will need to have gained:• 5-6 GCSEs grades at A*- C, or a Level 2

qualification

These may need to include particular subjects such as English and Maths, and/or possibly B grades in some subjects

For study at Level 4 or 5:There are no clearly defined entry requirements as many different factors are taken into account, including work experience, life experience and previous study. This will all be discussed with you at your interview.

The new site will be a relocation of the existing Grahame Park Campus, on Grahame Park Way, to Lanacre Avenue and will be a short 5 minute walk

from Colindale tube station. The accessible, urban location of the new campus and its close proximity to Underground and bus links will ensure an improved experience for college students and the local community.

It forms part of a £550 million urban master plan to regenerate the wider Grahame Park area; including 22,000 new residential dwellings. Building works will begin in February 2015, with the aim to have the new campus completed and ready for the start of the academic year in September 2016.

The new modern facility will bring education and training closer to the local community. A new college also brings with it better facilities, with a state-of-art learning environment. This will include the Construction Technology Centre for the College’s brickwork, carpentry & joinery, plastering, wall & floor tiling and plumbing courses. The Centre will offer access to cutting edge facilities in line with industry advancements and will support skills development and progression through to higher level qualifications. The Centre will also include ‘The Salon’, a training hair salon open to the public to feature the College’s hairdressing and barbering courses.

Additional community services at the new campus will include a new London Borough of Barnet Public Library and a new ‘hub’ for the Barnet Centre for Independent Living (B-CIL). B-CIL is a hub centre to provide support and advice for people with disabilities in respect of a range of matters such as, advocacy matters, life skills, computer skills and employment. It is a centre run largely by people with disabilities for people with disabilities.

The new Colindale Campus will ensure contemporary educational facilities within a new flexible purpose-built building that showcases education and offers the College a new identity in the local area.
