This direct work experience can greatly improve your training and potential employability once the course has come to an end.

Health, Education and Social Care courses can open up a number of interesting and challenging careers and employment opportunities in various sectors such as: education, childcare, teaching, counselling, health care, social care, nursing and children’s nursing, public and emergency services. The College offers a broad range of full and part time courses, some of which also prepare you for higher education in subjects such as nursing, social work, early years, youth work and teacher training.

We work closely with the London Boroughs of Barnet and Enfield in direct training projects as well as providing the highest quality childcare and healthcare employees for them. The department also supports the excellent work of local services by training early years and social care professionals.

HESC runs thirty different courses, ranging from Level 1 courses, aimed at both mature students and 16-18 year olds, up to the Early Childhood Studies Foundation Degree, which is validated by Middlesex University.

Health & Social Care for mature learners courses are primarily targeted at those wishing to develop their skills in supporting vulnerable young people and adults. Childcare courses are aimed at those wishing to learn how to care, support and educate young people. These courses benefit those already working or school leavers that wish to work in the sector, this includes any voluntary work. All courses are nationally accredited with CACHE, the Council for Awards in Care, Health and Education, and enable you to move into a career working with children in nurseries and schools. It will also appeal to those looking to move into the sector as a childcare worker, teacher, child psychologist or children’s nurse.

Success rates in these vocational courses are above the national average with some exceptional results; such as the College’s childminding course, which is outstanding with a 100% success and retention rate. Working in conjunction with local authorities the College trained 60 childminders in 2012/3, all of whom are now able to establish their own businesses, in turn providing an excellent local service for working families with children. The College aims to provide you with the very best teaching and support throughout the childminding course* to help you build the foundations for a new career or business. Learners also progress onto the Early Childhood Studies Foundation Degree.

*Entry criteria require that all childminders are working at GCSE English level, Grade C or above.

In 2011/12, all Foundation Degree students achieved their qualification with the majority gaining entry to a full B.A. (Hons) degree at Middlesex University.

Access to Higher EducationThe College also offers Access to Higher Education programmes that can help support mature students to pursue their goal of progressing onto University.

The HESC department boasts an extremely experienced team of teaching staff from a diverse range of backgrounds and expertise; ranging from nursery managers to primary school teachers, health care professionals and nurses, some of whom are still in practice alongside their teaching role. These specialisms ensure a breadth of knowledge and experience for students.

Getting the right job to suit your skill set and level of experience at the end of your course is a priority to the College. With that in mind the HESC team are proud to announce the launch of the HESC Learning Company, which aims to deliver SMART employability outcomes for students, using authentic work placement with integral and holistic assessment practices. In fact, a vital and essential component of a successful HESC vocational qualification at Barnet and Southgate College is the work placement experience. Practical opportunities and real life situations, coupled with theoretical knowledge and understanding are the foundation stones of a successful career in Health, Social Care, Childcare and Primary Education.

The HESC Learning Company: Phase 1: Students are enrolled on the Induction to Work Placement Programme spanning six weeks; students become familiar with working practices, basic skills such as setting up child centred, or service user activities, health and safety considerations, safeguarding procedures and other legal requirements. Students are made aware of assessment materials and protocols for their completion, and also have the opportunity to learn from experienced students alongside their tutors.

Phase 2: Students attend a chosen setting to gain knowledge and experience of working with a range of people depending on their particular course requirements. Students are supported and assessed in the work place by their own tutor, across a range of competences. Reflective diary tasks based on work placement experiences are also part of the assessment process.

Phase 3: Students refine their future career or further study choices and are supported to update their CV and learn about successfully applying for job roles. Employment agencies led by REED, based at the Wood Street campus, deliver whole class lectures and offer individual appointments to support students into employment. Local businesses and organisations are invited to take part in employment events for specific groups that include networking, small informal interviews and potential voluntary or paid opportunities, which include internships and apprenticeships.

Launching January 2014:Careers Ladder is an innovative new course to support you if you’re working full or part time and you want to change career direction. Professional advice, support and coaching is given to refine your career path, exploring the choices on offer to you and ensuring when you choose a job to apply for, you actually get it. The short four week course aims to arm you with the employability skills you will need to succeed in finding the right job, in the sector you are looking to move into.

The Barnet and Southgate College REED NCFE Employment Zone Enrolled students are guaranteed access to real jobs thanks to the College’s collaboration with REED NCFE. The REED NCFE Employment Zone is based at the Wood Street Campus in High Barnet, and we are proud to be the only College in London to host such an initiative.

The Employment Zone offers each student exclusive access to local HESC vacancies and jobs that are rarely advertised; receiving tailored training in the skills they will need specifically for these jobs, to help ensure maximum employability. REED NCFE also trains students to understand how the world of work operates and they are taught how to think and behave in a work environment, improving interview skills and given bespoke careers advice and work experience. In a recent survey of 1,264 employers conducted by REED, 97% of them put the workplace ‘mind-set’ element ahead of skills, as something they look for when recruiting someone. In a further study of 30,000 CVs (comparing successful CVs against unsuccessful ones), REED found that demonstrating a workplace mind-set on a CV ‘tripled your chances of getting and keeping’ the best jobs.

“Being on the course has given me the opportunity to learn in more depth about different topics and how to instigate them in my workplace setting. Also by enhancing my knowledge I find myself more confident in my role as a practitioner.”

“I’m on the Health and Social Care extended Diploma, eventually I’ll apply for an apprenticeship in social work as that’s my chosen field; as I like caring for people and enjoyed working and learning at the same time.”

“I’d like to offer my gratitude to Barnet and Southgate College for giving me the opportunity to study such an exciting HESC course. As a mature student working full time, I have a family to look after and the house to run, it’s very hard work studying full time in higher education at the same time. However, the unfailing support of all the staff has made this experience as enjoyable as it can possibly be. I recommend this course to all early years’ practitioners.”

“There are teachers that teach and there are teachers that inspire; I hope that in the near future I will be an inspirational teacher too.”

“Since starting my foundation degree in early childhood studies, my perception of learning has completely changed for the better. I find my lectures very interesting and I find the teachers very inspiring with their range of teaching skills and methods. They’re able to relate to each of us as individuals and provide the support needed in order for us to meet our goals.”

“I’m studying for the Level 3 BTEC in Health and Social Care – Barnet and Southgate was the only College in my area that offered this course, so I applied. I’ve been volunteering for St John’s Ambulance since I was ten, and now I teach the younger volunteers there. My ultimate aim is to go onto university and train to become a Paramedic.”

“I’m studying for the Health and Social Care BTEC, the equivalent of 3.5 A-Levels. I enjoy the coursework and the teaching is great as you get a lot of support. I’ve made new friends and gained good contacts from different backgrounds as it’s such a diverse and welcoming College. Eventually I aim to qualify as a Midwife or Nurse.”
