Barnet and Southgate College offers you a range of Higher Education and Access courses, allowing you to progress onto a number of career pathways. Some of our HE provision is delivered in partnership with University of Bolton, University of Derby and University of Hertfordshire.

Whatever course you choose to follow, you can be assured that the qualification you achieve at Barnet and Southgate College will have the same equivalence as those attained at university, but with the added advantage of smaller class sizes, extra support from tutors providing pastoral care and personal guidance from your lecturers with academic work.

Our fees are significantly lower than most universities offering similar courses and we have four campuses across North London. This offers many students the opportunity to continue to live at home whilst they study; it’s not only cheaper but often more convenient, and for mature students offers less disruption to family life. Deciding which HE course to choose and where to study is one of the most important decisions you may ever make. So come along and find out how we can help you make the right decision for a successful future in Higher Education.

REED NCFEStudents at Barnet and Southgate College are given a head start in their employment search thanks to an innovative collaboration with the REED NCFE Partnership.

The ‘REED NCFE Employment Zone’ offers each student exclusive access to local vacancies and jobs that are rarely advertised, they also receive tailored training in the skills they will need specifically for these jobs, to help ensure maximum employability once they have completed their studies at College.

All Barnet and Southgate HE students gain access to the REED NCFE Job Shop – supporting you into employment.

Employability is a fundamental reason for attending HE for most students. Due to students choosing this college, as opposed to a university they are making a conscious decision to forgo the traditional university experience, for one that is more suited to the mature student, who has other commitments and requirements, than the average 18 year old.

BSC Student Survey 2015

The Barnet and Southgate College REED NCFE Employment Zone will train students to understand how the world of work operates and they will be taught how to think and behave in a work environment, improve their interview skills and be given careers advice and work experience. In a recent survey of 1,264 employers conducted by REED, 97% put the workplace ‘mind-set’ element ahead of skills, as something they look for when recruiting. In a further study of 30,000 CVs (comparing successful CVs against unsuccessful ones), REED found that demonstrating a workplace mind-set on a CV “tripled your chances of getting and keeping” the best jobs.

Case studyChristopher Francis studied Foundation Degree in Business Management and went on to get a first degree at Middlesex University

When I first came here, I did not understand that university work consisted of assignment after assignment after assignment, but the College got into the routine that prepared me for university and higher education in general.

I then went onto Middlesex University, who work in partnership with Barnet and Southgate College, and thankfully, with the help of this course, I was able to complete a full BA in Business Management.

Future plans

I want to get into a career in consultancy and save up enough to do a Masters, and possibly do an MBA. Hopefully this will result in me progressing into middle management.

Being prepared for the world of work

In my second year at Barnet and Southgate secured me on an internship at a firm of my own choice. We had to choose six firms and send out six covering letters. That experience of being an intern is the reason why I am so confident in the workplace. If I had not had that experience of and being under a supervisor, I wouldn’t have understood what was required of me now. I recommend this College to whoever wants to be a business manager.

Case studyPatrycja Kowalik, ESOL for 16-18s, BTEC Diploma in Travel and Tourism L2 and L3 and Beginners French. Now studying HND in Travel & Tourism Management, which can then lead on to further study with the College onto FDa ITM or Business degree.

Being a Resort Representative on a trip to Krakow, as part of the HND in Travel and Tourism Management, was definitely a fun and valuable experience. The responsibilities included: planning a day trip around the city and sightseeing. I was also in charge of evening activities and generally made sure that everything ran smoothly.

We also did the British Airways Customer Service training, which was a great experience. The training taught us the practical side of tourism. I have learnt a lot about the rules and regulations through fun activities prepared by British Airways. It was extremely interesting and I think it will prove invaluable.

My passions are the environment and history, so my aim is to find a job in heritage or ecotourism. I believe with the support from my lecturers at Barnet and Southgate College, I have a chance to achieve my goals.

Higher National DiplomaFor those students wanting a practical route to the workplace

Higher National Diplomas (HNDs) are work related Higher Education qualifications. While degrees tend to focus on gaining knowledge, HNDs are designed to give you the skills to put that knowledge to effective use in a particular job. They are highly valued by employers both in the UK and overseas. Because HNDs are designed to give you the skills for a particular field of work, they can lead straight to a career.

You can often go on from an HND to study a degree as they are the equivalent of one or two years of university study. So completing a HND can allow entry into the second or third year of a bachelor’s degree, dependent on the course.

Foundation DegreeAn alternative to university with a practical and industry related ethos

Foundation Degrees are modern, Higher Education qualifications that are designed to equip you with the skills and knowledge that businesses are looking for. They can also offer an alternative route into Higher Education at a university. A Foundation Degree usually takes two years of full-time study to complete, and sits at the same level as the Higher National Diploma and equivalent to the first two years of a three year bachelor’s degrees.

Our Foundation Degrees are run in conjunction with a variety of HE institutes including universities of Bolton, Derby and Hertfordshire and if you successfully complete the Foundation Degree course and achieve good grades, you may progress onto a third year with this or other institutions to top up your Foundation Degree to a full honours degree. Coming soon... new Colindale Campus for September 2016The College is executing exciting plans to build a brand new campus as part of a major regeneration scheme in Colindale.

The new site will be a relocation of the existing Grahame Park Campus, on Grahame Park Way, to Lanacre Avenue and will be a short 5 minute

walk from Colindale tube station. The accessible, urban location of the new campus and its close proximity to Underground and bus links will ensure an improved experience for college students and the local community.

It forms part of a £550 million urban master plan to regenerate the wider Grahame Park area; including 22,000 new residential dwellings. Building works will begin in February 2015, with the aim to have the new campus completed and ready for the start of the academic year in September 2016.

The new modern facility will bring education and training closer to the local community. A new college also brings with it better facilities, with a state-of-art learning environment. This will include the Construction Technology Centre for the College’s brickwork, carpentry & joinery, plastering, wall & floor tiling and plumbing courses. The Centre will offer access to cutting edge facilities in line with

industry advancements and will support skills development and progression through to higher level qualifications. The Centre will also include ‘The Salon’, a training hair salon open to the public to feature the College’s hairdressing and barbering courses.

Additional community services at the new campus will include a new London Borough of Barnet Public Library and a new ‘hub’ for the Barnet Centre for Independent Living (B-CIL). B-CIL is a hub centre to provide support and advice for people with disabilities in respect of a range of matters such as, advocacy matters, life skills, computer skills and employment. It is a centre run largely by people with disabilities for people with disabilities.

The new Colindale Campus will ensure contemporary educational facilities within a new flexible purpose-built building that showcases education and offers the College a new identity in the local area.

“We are proud of securing an investment that will create an outstanding College asset in the heart of this major regeneration development. This is great news for our future students and

good for the community as a whole. The move might only be about half a mile on the map, but it’s a world away in terms of the opportunities it offers for the future of the College. We have room to expand and can improve our facilities to deliver a real 21st Century learning experience.”
