Barco SimCAD™: the all-in-one design and installation toolDesign analysis and prediction

Using SIMCAD™, Barco's proprietary simulator design andoptimization tool, all display parameters and customerrequirements are easily translated into a highly detailed ray-tracing based model. SimCAD™ offers auto-optimization ofprojector placement and orientation (including obstructionanalysis) and yields accurate real-time predictions ofbrightness, contrast and resolution, including Mercator andAitoff plots of the channel coverage for even the most complextiled layouts. SIMCAD™ designs can be exported to commonCAD/CAM packages.

Installation and calibration

At the installation site, a computer-driven laser theodolite anddistance measuring tool automatically creates a 3D model ofthe display system, including coordinates for the theodoliteand eye points. Next, it marks reference points on thedisplay surface that are subsequently fixed using Barco'spatented Laser Diode Array Tool (LDAT™). The projectorsare then carefully calibrated to these geometric referencesusing test patterns generated by POLARIS™, through the fastand accurate alignment capabilities offered by xRACU™ andAUTOALIGN™.

Configuration and optimization

SIMCAD™’s ray-tracing accurately calculates the geometrydistortion and edge blending required for each projectorchannel. These parameters can be downloaded into theWARP™ processor of the projectors through the intermediatexRACU™ communication capabilities, automatically andaccurately pre-aligning them for use in the designed displayposition.

POLARIS™: Barco’s expert projector alignmentsoftware

For fast, easy alignment of complex multi-screen projectionsystem, Barco has developed its own proprietary dedicatedsoftware.

With an intuitive user interface, Barco’sPOLARIS™ software is driven by multi-pipe, multi-channel image generators tocalculate and generate user-specifiedpre-distorted test patterns.

The POLARISTM software is available IRIX,Windows, HP, SUN ans Linux platforms.

Tools for fast and accurate installation and easy maintenance

AutoAlign™ suite

Barco’s AutoAlignTM suite of products represents a breakthroughin the automated alignment or re-alignment of multi-channeldisplay systems. Barco’s original Automatic Alignment systemallows you to quickly and easily perform routine alignmenttasks, such as geometry and convergence adjustments, to aBarco CRT-based projection system. Barco’s ACURASTM enablesyou to perform fast, accurate, and repeatable brightness andcolor adjustments to a Barco SIM 6 Ultra II LCD projectionsystem.

Barco’s AutoAlignTM suite of products are designed to work handin hand with Barco’s xRACUTM control system and dramatically

improve system operation and performance.

Laser Diode Array Tool: LDAT™

Barco's LDATTM marks reference patterns to effectively align displaychannels. The LDATTM provides a solution for up to 30 dedicatedlaser light sources which can be independantly directed to pointson the screen. Multiple arrays are used to mark a completemulti-channel system.

Barco’s LDATTM is a permanent maintenance tool to verify theproper alignment of the display system.

PolarisTM, Barco's own pattern generating program, generatesthe necessary test patterns projected by the display system tomatch the geometry onto the fixed reference pattern provided bythe LDATTM.

xRACU™: multi-system Remote Alignment andControl Unit

The Barco xRACUTM is the most flexible projector control systemavailable. As a world’s first, it allows you to operate, calibrate, configure and diagnose multiple Barco projectors (any mixof CRT, LCD, DLP and LCoS) from a single hand-heldcontroller.

The Barco xRACUTM reduces set-up and maintenance time. It automatically detects the projector type and location, andautomatically downloads its parameters (video timings, etc). The system uses a common interface across all projector typesand technologies and allows thesimultaneous control of allprojectors.

For flexible operation, thexRACUTM can store multipleTime of Day modes, withcalibrated interpolation betweenmodes. The centralized storageof parameters considerablyreduces MTTR.

Dedicated problems call for

The requirements for large field-of-view, high-resolution

displays are diverse. Simulation applications may require a

number of different system configurations such as front or rear

projection; different screen shapes from spherical to cylindrical,

to conic, to flat. Screen sizes may range from 3’ x 3’ (1 x 1m)

to 9’ x 60’ (3 x 20m) flat to a 90’ (30m) diameter

hemispherical dome. Users may require high brightness, high

contrast or both. The system may be single user or for multiple

simultaneous users.

On single-channel systems, projected images appear very good

and design compromises are virtually unnoticeable to even the

trained observer. In multi-channel applications the most casual

observer will notice when the image channels do not align, the

brightness across channels is different and the colors do not

match. Geometric distortions in large multi-channel displays

can be casued by projector misalignment, imperfect lenses and

folding mirrors and those from displays themselves. The

uncorrected images will have luminance and color variations

both between and within each projector channel.

Dedicated solutions

Blending with non-optimized projectors:

The first step in designing a solution for multi-channel applications

is to select projectors with the appropriate features and

optimizations. Since no single projector technology is the

best in all circumstances, Barco offers all the major projec-

tion technologies available – CRT, LCD, DLP™, and LCoS –

each optimized with a broad range of Barco features to fit

specific application needs.

Color uniformity

Complete uniformity of colorand color through out andbetween all screens is verycrucial to the image quality. To eliminate channel-to-channel color variations,Barco has integratedDynaColor™ and LinkedDynaColor™ for its LCD,DLP™, and LCoS projectors,in addition to chromaticallymatching opticalcomponents.

Brightness uniformity

The brightness has to be consistant throughout the entireimage area and constant over time. Barco light valve projectorsattain and maintain brightness uniformity with Constant LightOutput (CLO) and Linked CLO.

Brightness differences

Geometry errorsColor differences

Imperfect blend

Page 11: Barco Brochure Simulator

Perfect geometry

Image shift and geometric distortion must not be visible overthe entire image area. Barco's Digital Waveform generatorenables you to eliminate distortion for CRT projectors. Digitalcontrol over geometry correction is accomplished with Barco’s exclusive WARPTM technology on SIM 5R, SIM 6 Ultra II,and SIM 7 projectors.

Invisible blend

Transitions between projection channels in a multi-channel system should be invisible. To be able to offer a perfect blendfor all configurations and all brightness levels, while maintainingoptimal contrast, Barco’s light valve based display systemsprovide Optical Soft Edge Matching (OSEM) as well asElectronic Soft Edge Matching (ESEM) or a combination ofboth. The 900 series CRT projectors are equipped with digitalSEMU II for electronic blending with time-of-day tracking.

Professional image quality

To reach an overal perfect picture quality, special attention isgiven to prevent motion artifacts from becoming obvious overlarge picture areas with TMR: True Motion Reproduction, andto zero delay display with TDR: Transport Delay Reduction to allowing full mission rehearsal simulation.

Page 12: Barco Brochure Simulator

Why LCD? Why DLPTM?LCD technology separates the lightsource from the modulator, enablingyou to reach far higher light outputs. The delay commonly associated withimage processing, makes standard off-the-shelf LCD projectors unfit for fullmission rehearsal simulators.

Barco LCD projectors provide:• "Zero Delay" through TDR and WARP• Well-established and stable technology• Compact, rugged, portable• UXGA resolution available• Integrated WARP 6™ geometry

distortion• DynaColorTM for perfect primary color

matching• Extended Contrast Ratio (ECR) dimmer

for enhanced night-time contrast• High-quality optical blending• User-friendly maintenance• Quick internal projector alignment

and easy setup

DLP™ technology uses a small mirrorfor each pixel to manipulate lightdigitally and is used when high lightoutput combined with a good contrastratio is indispensable. DLP™ processingrequires a full frame time before theimage is displayed. A total systemlatency due of 33ms at 60Hz confinesDLP™ based projectors to applicationswhere interaction to the projectedimage is less critical, such as air trafficcontrol and ship bridge simulators.

Barco's DLPTM projectors provide:• Superior DLP™ picture quality• Optimized optical engine components• Minimized frame delay using FLEX 4

geometry predistortion• Linked CLO and DynaColor™ for cross-

channel color and brightness control• Extended Contrast Ratio (ECR)

dimmer for enhanced night-timecontrast

• Full installation flexibility throughlens shift & Scheimpflug

• User friendly maintenance

Why LCoS?LCoS (or Liquid Crystal on Silicone) isthe latest in reflective light valvetechnology that works by light passingthrough a liquid crystal layer andbouncing off a reflective surface. LCoSoffers several advantages for flightsimulation, such as high resolution, fastswitching speeds for low smearing,high-contrast ratio, and longer lifetimeover transmissive light-valve techno-logies. Its large pixel aperture results insmooth, continuous realistic images.

Barco’s LCoS projectors provide:• Optimized results for multi-channel

visualization• Smear-free operation• Advanced, zero frame delay warping• Extended Contrast Ratio for accurate

night/dusk training• Full-brightness operation when

options are disabled• Motion-base simulator compatibility• Stimulated NVG capability

Proprietary optimizations for light-valve technology

CLO: Constant Light Output This feature continually monitors andadjusts the brightness of the projector, eliminating the effect of lamp brightnessevolutions. In its linked configuration, CLOensures that all projectors in a multi-channel system maintain the samebrightness, independent of lamp life!

Linked CLOMonitors and adjusts the brightness of alllinked projectors to the lowest value.

DynaColor™High-precision digital "color spacetransformation" eliminates channel-to-channel color variations. Directcontrol of the primary and secondarycolors quarantees accurate colormatching and provides maximumaddressable color space across thewhole dynamic range of the display.

A graphical representation of the color triangle provides an excellent visualization of the colorcorrections being applied.

Linked DynaColor™Linked DynaColorTM automatically alignsthe projector to a common color triangle. This ensures that all projectors in theentire system have exactly the sameprimary and secondary color coordinates. The system auto-senses the addition ofa new projector to a system andupdates the common color triangle asrequired.

The linked DynaColorTM option is included with thelinked CLO option.

Gray Level Definition(for SIM 6 Ultra II and SIM 7 projectors)

Tracks and controls the grayscale levelsof each projector to ensure gradientdefinitions match across the multi-channel system.

Adjustable Scheimpflug CorrectionA modified lens mount has been devel-oped that allows the lens to be tilted inboth horizontal and vertical direction. This ensures perfect focus on tiltedscreen configurations, thereby increasingthe installation flexibility of the SIM 6Ultra II to a level unique for light valveprojectors.

Advanced geometry distortion forSIM 6 Ultra II and SIM 5R

WARP 6™ is the most advancedgeometry distortion technology usingproprietary bi-cubic interpolation. It isspecifically optimized to preserve finedetail in the image and suppressresampling artifacts - without processingdelay. Thanks to WARP 6™, fixed matrixand DLPTM projectors like the the SIM 6ULTRA II and SIM 5R can be used in a widevariety of curved-screen applications, ranging from straightforward cylindricaldisplays to the most severe distortions.

Gamut Expansion & Matching for SIM 6

Ultra IIAll projectors of a multi-channel systemare carefully matched using uniqueoptical components, raising the coloraccuracy throughout the application. GEMat the same time improves the primarycolor uniformity within the separateimages. This technology also increasesthe addressable color gamut of thecombined multi-channel system.

TDR: Transport Delay Reduction(for Barco’s SIM 6 Ultra II projector)

For simulation applications, it is impera-tive that no processing delay occursinside the projector. For this purpose,Barco has developed optimized digitalprocessing algorithms, which ensurethat the sum of all possible image corrections (including de-interlacing)amounts to an imperceptible delay cor-responding to less than three lines on-screen! This ensures that the SIM 6 UltraII projector will not be the bottleneck inyour display system.

TMRMotion blur

TMRSmearing

(for SIM 6 Ultra II and SIM 7 projectors)

Thanks to TMR, the sharpness of movingimages is preserved by adjustingmotion compensation, detail and edgeenhancement, and motion-adaptivenoise reduction. In addition, the processing speed canbe adjusted to avoid overshoots thatmanifest themselves as smearing inthe reversed polarity, such as when thetail of a dark moving object on a lighterbackground appears whiter than thebackground.

Barco’s seamless 3-channel imagethanks to:

• DynaColor™ for color uniformity• CLO for brightness uniformity• OSEM for an invisible blend

i-StereoFrom a single high-bandwidth PC orworkstation output (>170 MHz), i-Stereo produces two channel pictureswith blend, without intermediateinterfaces.

ECR: Extended Contrast RatioBarco’s sophisticated ECR technologyeliminates extraneous light rays thatlimit the dark level to greatly increasethe contrast ratio and considerablyimprove picture quality.

NVG optimizationBarco’s ECR technology and night visiongoggles (NVG) optimization lets you usethe SIM 5R and SIM 7 projectors fortrue, realistic NVG stimulation with ultrarealistic blooming and halo night visioneffects.

ESEM: Electronic Soft Edge MatchingIn multi-channel setups, the nonzeroblack level of light valve projectorsnormally leads to brighter overlap zones, especially in night scenes. Barco’sstandard ESEM technology allows toadjust edge blending without black-levelcorrection on all Barco simulationprojectors.

OSEM: Optical Soft Edge MatchingWith Barco’s proprietary OSEM,blending filters in the optical pathmaintain the black level in the overlapzone to that of the separate images. This results in a seamless image withinvisible blends, also in night sceneries, with complete control over the fulldynamic range.
