2010 Sale Cattle

WelcomeIt is a pleasure to present our 2010/11 sale offering. While we will be taking some of the bulls to the Calgary and Medicine Hat bull sales in 2011, we market the majority of our bulls and all the bred heifers by private treaty so that we can better serve the needs of our customers.

Our herd was established in 1934 by Jim (J.B.) Cross at the a7 Ranch near Nanton and then consolidated west of Okotoks in 1953 under the Bar Pipe brand. After J.B.’s death, his son Donald held the reins and now, in turn, Donald’s son Jay and his wife Lucy have taken over the operation.

s The cattle industry has undergone dramatic changes in the last few years, driven first by BSE, then high feed and input costs, and a growing focus on carcass merit.

To fit with these times, our breeding goals are:

Performance – We collect birth, weaning and yearling weights, and perform carcass ultrasound at one year of age. We are enrolled in the Total Herd Evaluation (THE) program of the Canadian Hereford Association in order to produce true herd indices and select the best.

Uniformity – Many visitors note the consistency of our cows and sale pen. We get this by sticking to a set of breeding goals that don’t compromise in one area in order to advance another, using different bloodlines to weave together as well as line breeding to elite sires. The introduction of over 100 cows from the Kallal herd in 2007 expanded our genetic base and we are delighted with the results.

Fertility – A cow producing a calf every year should be a given. In addition, 75-80% of our calves come in the first cycle. Less labour, heavier and more uniform calves in the fall…you do the math!

Structural longevity – A replacement female doesn’t start to return a profit until her third or fourth calf and so longevity is critical. However, in the purebred industry, we sometimes see an emphasis on turnover of generations, with the desire to sell the ‘next best thing’. At Bar Pipe, 30% of our cows are less than 4 years old and we cull hard for conformation and udders, but 35% are older than 8 and up to 12. Breeding for longevity of cows that can still wean a heavy calf will help your bottom line.

Efficiency – Since no one wants to have to pamper their cattle, we select for cattle that thrive on forage year round by relying on winter grazing and calving in April/May on pasture.

Genetic integrity – With the advent of genomic tools, we test our herd sires to be free of known genetic abnormalities and participate in research to advance the discovery of markers of desirable traits.

Use cattle to harvest and improve the land Through our reliance on grazing, we are committed to improving our grasslands through such measures as controlled pasture management, training cattle to graze weed species, and winter bale grazing to place manure in areas that will benefit from the nutrients.

Understand and serve the long term needs of our customers – For that to work, we need to know your operation and you need to see our whole cow herd, not just the few bulls at the bull sale…hence our focus on private treaty sales.

Our guarantee is that 1) We will work with you to find cattle that meet your needs and provide the information that you need; 2) Your bulls have been semen tested and are structurally sound; 3) We will provide you with actual birthweights, weaning weights, yearling weights, carcass ultrasound information, EPDs, as well as history on close relatives. You are entitled to know the full story; 4) If your bull does not perform, we will work with you immediately to find a replacement that gets your cows pregnant.

This consistent breeding bull throws thickness, hair and good markings. Females out of 144P have very neat udders and are producing some of our best-calves. We look forward to add-ing more daughters to our herd.

An extra long, easy doing herdsire with a deep quarter, that passes these traits on to his calves. He is backed by a power-ful cow family and has daugh-ters in production at both Bar Pipe and Rutledge Herefords. His sons have been popular with ranch customers. Herd bulls out of 124P at Grant Musgrove’s and SNS Herefords. Semen available.

Used as an outcross this sire was selected for his length and extra performance. As a sire group, his sons are top performers with extra bone. We are featur-ing three Goldrush sons at the Medicine Hat Bull Sale in 2011.Longevity on the dam side of his pedigree is another plus.

He is a smooth bull, easy-fleshing and has a great disposition. His calves are lighter at birth and just keep getting better as they mature. His mother and grandmother are two of the top Kallal cows here at Bar Pipe. Australian semen rights owned by Mawarra Hereford Stud. Also used by Marvin Feddes and Sons and Lilybrook Herefords in 2010. Canadian and US qualified semen available.

11T was used as a yearling and bred to a group of young Rib-stone cows. 11T sired a strong group of both sons and daugh-ters with extra performance. His dam was one of the best Kahlua daughters at Bar Pipe.

We pulled 44U on August 20,after breeding 65 cows at Anchor Polled Herefords and Bar Pipe Hereford Ranch.This easy-doing young bull was ready for FarmFair in November. He brought home Res. Sr. Champion honours and lots of interest from ranchers and breeders.
