Two Extremes: 1. Baptism isn’t necessary for salvation, therefore,

it doesn’t matter if I get baptized.

2. Baptism is necessary for salvation, therefore, you must get baptized.

18 Then Jesus came near and said to them, “All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. 19 Go,

therefore, and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of

the Holy Spirit, 20 teaching them to observe everything I have commanded you. And remember, I am with you

always, to the end of the age.”

THREE QUESTIONS REGARDING BAPTISM:

1. Who should get baptized? What is the prerequisite?

36 “Therefore let all the house of Israel know with certainty that God has made this Jesus, whom you crucified, both Lord and Messiah!” 37 When they heard this, they came

under deep conviction and said to Peter and the rest of the apostles: “Brothers, what must we do?” 38 “Repent,” Peter

said to them, “and be baptized, each of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins, and you will

receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.

39 For the promise is for you and for your children, and for all who are far off, as many as the Lord our God will call.”

40 And with many other words he testified and strongly urged them, saying, “Be saved from this corrupt

generation!” 41 So those who accepted his message were baptized, and that day about 3,000 people were added to

them.

Baptism is to be practiced by those who have repented of their rebellion toward God and

trusted in Jesus as Lord and Savior

44 While Peter was still speaking these words, the Holy Spirit came down on all those who heard the message. 45 The circumcised believers who had come with Peter were astounded because the gift of the Holy Spirit had been poured out on the Gentiles also. 46 For they heard

them speaking in other languages and declaring the greatness of God.

Then Peter responded, 47 “Can anyone withhold water and prevent these people from being baptized, who

have received the Holy Spirit just as we have?” 48 And he commanded them to be baptized in the name of Jesus

Christ. Then they asked him to stay for a few days.

“The consistent witness of the New Testament is that someone first believes in Jesus and then is baptized. This is called believers’ baptism. Never do we witness

the reverse order where someone, such as an infant, is baptized and then later believes in Jesus.”

Baptism is a picture showing what God did for you and what happened to you when He

saved you

we who died to sin still live in it?

Key Thought

Baptism is not necessary for salvation, but it is necessary if we are going to truly be

followers of Jesus because to truly follow Jesus means we choose to obey Jesus.
