BALIKESİR

CITY CENTER

Balıkesir is in the west of Turkey and in the Marmara Region.

The neigbours of Balıkesir are Çanakkale, Bursa, Manisa,

Kütahya and İzmir. Balıkesir has coasts both by the Marma-

ra Sea and the Aegean Sea. The population of Balıkesir is

1.154.314 people. The historical background of Balıkesir is

based on Hittite Period. Balıkesir was the center of Karesio-

ğulları. It joined to Ottoman Empire. It was one of cities

where Kuva-yi Milliye Movement started.

There are a lot of historical monuments in Balıkesir. These

are Clock Tower, the Fountain, the Karesi Mausoleum, Zağ-

nos Pasha Mosque.

Pamukçu Hot Springs

Places of natural beauty are Değirmen Boğazı Picnic Area,

Atatürk Park and Çamlık. There are several healing hot

springs.

When you visit Balıkesir, you should tast “Höşmerim and

Balıkesir Kaymaklısı”. These are very delicious desserts.

Balıkesir is famous for its lily cologne. So you can buy cologne

for your friends as a present.

BANDIRMA

Bandırma is a harbor city. It takes place in the middle of

İstanbul, İzmir and Bursa. Bandırma is number one in

Balıkesir with its strategic location and advancement.

Bandırma has a 5000-year-old history. Bandırma has the se-

cond largest port of the region after İstanbul. Bandırma is

an active industrial and trade center.

Bandırma hosts Bird Paradise National Park with 266 birds,

118 plants and 23 fishes species. When you visit Bandırma,

you should see this park and visit the Daskyleion antique city.

GÖNEN

Gönen is famous for its the source of healing water. In its

history, Gönen is known as the “city of hot spring” or the

“healing city”. During construction works around the hot

springs, mosaics, engraved stones, column heads and coins

were found. These show that the settlement of Gönen dates

back to 2nd century A.D.

The famous story writer Ömer Sey-

fettin was born in Gönen in 1884. He

mentioned about his memories in Gö-

nen some of his stories such as “ Ant”

and “Kaşağı”. The places in his stories

can be seen stil in Gönen.

MARMARA

ISLAND

Marmara Island takes place in the north of Balıkesir and in

the Marmara Sea. Marmara Island has got unique nature,

fresh air and clear sea. It’s preferred by people who would li-

ke to have peaceful holiday.

This island is different from other neighbourhood islands

with olive groves, vineyards, Turkish pines and maquis.

Marmara Island is one of two islands which has no damp in

the world. There are marble mines in here, so the marble ab-

sorbs the moisture.

ERDEK

Erdek is in the northest line of Balıkesir and in the Kapı-

dağ peninsula. The history of Erdek goes back to 7th cen-

tury B.C. The ancient city Kyzikos famous for its magnifi-

cent buildings and richness is in Erdek.

You should see the temple of

Hadrian, Kyzikos Amphithe-

atre , Kirazlı Monastery and

Seyitgazi Hill. And you can

swim in natural beaches. Be-

sides, olive and olive oil are

famous in Erdek.
