Last night’s show at the Gaylord Entertainment Center punctuated a promise delivered after a week of unprecedented downtown energy. Hosts Brooks & Dunn had the early momentum, taking the pre-show Video of the Year award and adding Duo and Single, as well. Ronnie Dunn was also bulleted for Song, along with Craig Wiseman, for their composition “Believe.” The show could have easily adopted another acronym – SBMG Awards, perhaps – as the Sony BMG contingent carried away most of the crystal. But while many have questions about a nominations process that leaves superstars like Tim McGraw and Toby Keith conspicuously absent, it is impossible to fault the ultimate winner selections. Well-deserved honors went to Entertainer Kenny Chesney, Female Vocalist and Horizon winner Carrie Underwood, and Album and Vocal Event (with Dolly Parton) recipient Brad Paisley. Male Vocalist Keith Urban was genuinely missed backstage, onstage and in the audience of his peers. Rascal Flatts earned their fourth consecutive Group honor. Fast National ratings showed ABC averaging a 9.9 rating/15 share, leading second place CBS which logged an 8/12. The CMA show’s first hour drew a 9.6/14, hour two scored 10.7/16 and dropped to second behind CBS’s CSI: Miami in the third hour with a 9.4/15. Last year’s CMA show on CBS earned an overall average rating of 11.1/17. If there’s any lingering question after such a successful show and week, it’s if the CMA, and the city of Nashville in particular, can afford to jump back across the river to the Opry House in ’07. Babs Telegraphed Chesney’s Win Barbara Mandrell told Kenny Chesney he was the CMA’s Entertainer of theYear nanoseconds before she told millions of ABC viewers that he had won the coveted award. The untold story is that Mandrell informed Chesney’s manager Clint Higham that if she saw his name when she opened the envelope, she’d let out some kind of exclamation as a tip-off the honor was coming his way. Clint, of course, passed that on to Kenny. So, when Mandrell opened the Deloitte & Touche-sealed card and shrieked, “Thank you, Jesus,” the Chesney team knew that their hard work was about to be rewarded.
