Cosmic sound vibrations create, sustain and destroy all material manifestations. Music is the harmonious vibration of sound waves that influence the body and mind. Beyond the intellect, music

creates harmony by touching our deepest spiritual essence. Vedic music therapy uses primordial sound vibration to resonate and create balance at the deepest level of our being.

Ancient Indian classical musicians have observed various facets of nature, day and night and dawn and dusk, pleasure and pain and ecstasy and grief, to create ragas, the moods or melodies. In other words ragas are the musical replication of the expression of the universe. Each raga contains an ascending and descending form, expressed through specific notes or octaves. Even now there

are musicians in India who can make rain in summer playing their bamboo flute and light a lamp by tuning their veena. An

expert medico-musician can prescribe the suitable raga to be used along with internal medicines.

Deep within us is the never silent sound of our own vibrations, which we may ignore but which is the musical core within us all.- Yehudi Menuhin

Mantras for healthMantras are thoughts, letters, words, phrases, sentences, paragraphs, chapters and even books which when pronounced or used correctly un-leash powerful energies. Mantras have two planes - the meaning and the vibrations. Both are important while using them. There is no mantra with-out meaning.

All Vedic mantras have three aspects. The first one is the goal or visualisa-tion behind the mantra. The second aspect is anchoring it into the specific areas of our mind and body. And the third part is the visualisation of re-sults with strong conviction.

Man means the mind and tra means to free, to release or to protect. Mantra is a very effective tool to release mental tension and suppressed emotions, creating a calm and focused state of mind. Harnessing positive influences into ones life and dispelling negativitites, mantras can support all aspects of our life. Given below are some Mantras for empowering vari-ous parts of our body.

The head Om Keshavaaya namahThe naval Om Naaraayanaaya namahThe chest Om Maadhavaaya namahThe throat Om Govindaaya namahThe right belly Om Vishnave namahThe right arm Om Madhusuudanaaya namahThe right shoulder Om Trivikramaaya namahThe left belly Om Vaamanaaya namahThe left arm Om Sridharaaya namahThe left shoulder Om Hrishikeshaaya namahThe upper back Om Padmanaabhaaya namahThe lower back Om Daamodaraaya namah

All parts of the bodyHare Krishna Hare Krishna Krishna Krishna Hare HareHare Rama Hare Rama Rama Rama Hare Hare

Om Namah ShivaayaOm Saraswatyai NamahOm Namo NaarayanaayaOm Shri Ganapataye Namah

    Dont forget to chant your

    mantra. The period of

spiritual practise is like climbing a

high mountain. You need a lot

    of strength and energy. Mountain

climbers use a rope for pulling themselves up.

For you, the only rope is repetition

    of a mantra. Therefore,

    try to repeat your mantra

    constantly. Once you reach

the peak, you can relax and rest

    forever. Mata

Chanting JapaA mantra is a set of sacred syllables, a short and powerful formula for awakening your dormant spiritual consciousness. All religions practice chanting whether it be the Christians chanting Hail Mary on their rosary, Hindus chanting Hare Krishna on their tulasi mala or the Tibetan Buddhists reciting Om Mane Padme Hum the goal is one, to align our beings with a divine loving, guiding and protecting presence.

Self-healing with Music Listen with your heart, not just your mind.

    Enjoy music. Minimise analyzing it.

Listen to good music for about 15 minutes four times a day.

Make driving, eating, bathing, exercising or cooking more

    enjoyable with music.

Singing or playing a raga is preferable to passive listening.

Learn to play a musical instrument.

Encourage children to listen to music.

Minimise mp3 or any other low quality music.

Always have gentle, soothing music around a sick person.

Have a good music library at home.

    A mantra

    is mystical

    energy

    encased

    in a sound

    structure,

    each mantra

    containing

    within its

    vibrations a

    unique power.

Kerala Retreat TherapiesThese are oil and other tactile therapies, which are either rejuvenative or pre-panchakarma therapies practiced in Kerala.

    1. Massage ~ Abhyaga-mardana: Full body and head massage with herbal oils freshly prepared on the premises. As with most treatments, this is carried out by several trained masseuses or masseurs on a specially carved wooden table. This is called a Droni and is made from a medicinal wood such as teak, sandalwood, Jack tree, Himalayan cedar or neem. Benefits: Most relaxing and rejuvenative. Used in disorders of Vata, such as rheumatism, arthritis, muscle, bone and neurological disorders.

    2. Herbal stream ~ Dhara: Milk, buttermilk, medicated oil, ghee or herbal decoctions are poured on the head or body in a specific rhythmic way from a wide-mouthed earthen vessel with a cord hanging from the center. The patient lies on the Droni, a clean cloth is then tied around their head to prevent oil from pouring into their eye. The treatment lasts for 60 to 90 minutes. When it is done on the body, it will be accompanied by massage also. Benefits: Dhara alleviates fatigue, improves mental capacities and restores systemic imbalances. It is especially useful in insomnia, chronic fatigue, chronic headaches, ear and nose diseases, neurological diseases, spondylitis, paraplegia and psychiatric disorders.

    3. Oil steam~ Pizhichil: At least four attendants are required in this treatment. The patient lies on the Droni and the attendants then dip cotton strips of cloth into warm medicated oil and apply the oil by squeezing it from the cloth onto the body. Benefits: Musculo-skeletal disorders, rheumatism, paralysis and sciatica.

The patient generally sits upright as the warm medicated oil is poured into the cap, effectively covering the crown of the head. The treatment continues for 45 to 90 minutes. While the oil is taken out and reheated oil will be filled in the hat at regular intervals, without disturbing the system. The body will be massaged with medicated oil before and after treatment. At the end the oil on the head is then wiped with dry towels and the patients body is bathed in warm water. Yogic Shat-kriyasLiterally meaning six (shat) therapies (kriyas), these are safe but deep-cleansing techniques devel-oped by ancient yogis. While Ayurvedic purification is done in the presence of a qualified physician, Yogic cleansing can be practiced on ones own after receiving proper training. Shat-kriyas are mostly used for maintaining the purity of the mind and body. But these are also used to cleanse the system and to cure a disease.

Nauli: Essentially this is an exercise of the abdominal muscles, consisting of a voluntary contraction of the rectus abdominis muscles and using the contracted recti for massaging the abdominal con-tent. This is an effective method of active auto-massage of the abdominal viscera. Nauli is practiced in udhyana-bandha, during exhalation while the abdominal viscera is pulled back. Here the individual attempts to move the contracted recti muscles. Nauli can be performed while in standing or sitting positions, though it is better to start the practice in a standing position. Nauli is practiced on an empty stomach, preferably early in the morning. The feet are kept at about 1 1/2 feet distance. Ankles are rotated outwards and the knees be kept slightly flexed. The palm or the hands should be placed over the thighs, diverting the weight of the trunk of the body over the thighs through the hands, the neck and the shoulder being carefully straightened. Air is fully expelled through a deep exhalation. The abdominal muscles are relaxed by flexing the neck and one inhales without allowing the breath to get in. This will permit the abdominal muscles to retract and get stuck back to the costal margins. Then the individual should create a front-downward pressure over the abdomen just above the pubic region, which is the site of the rectus abdominis muscles. By straining this site the recti muscles start contracting, all other muscles in the vicinity remain relaxed. A continuous careful prac-tice of the above brings the recti to contract voluntarily forming a hard bundle occupying the central abdominal wall throughout the length from the pubic area up to the central costal margin. This is known as central nauli (madhyama nauli). To practice left (vama) and right (dakshina) nauli, one should voluntary contract the left and right rectus abdominis muscles separately while the other is fully relaxed. After this, the complete (purna) nauli is practiced i.e. free voluntary mobilisation of the nauli over the abdomen, in which the bundle moves clockwise and anticlockwise. Nauli is practiced for 7-21 rounds in one breath each time. Indications for nauli include diseases of stomach, intestines, rectum and reproductive system.

Dhauti: This is parallel to vomiting therapy (vamana) in Ayurveda. In Vastra dhauti the stomach is cleaned with a 2 1/2 X 21 sized, sterile muslin cloth soaked in salt water. Soon after the ribbon is swal-lowed nauli is practiced and it is taken out slowly and steadily. This is practiced in a standing position. The whole exercise should be finished within 10 min-utes. Otherwise it can be difficult to take the ribbon out, in which case one should drink a glass of warm water to loosen the cloth and then remove it. Danda dhauti, the second variety is the process of drinking enough lukewarm saline water orally followed by putting a safe sterile tube into the stom-

ach through the mouth to remove all the water. Jala dhauti, the third type is done by drinking around 2 litres of warm lukewarm water and vomiting it immediately.

Vasti: This is the therapy to cleanse the large intestine. There are two methods. Pavana vasti is the process of purifying the colon with air. This is achieved with the help of a sterile, smooth tube smeared with oil on it inserted into the rectum in a squatting position. Air is sucked and expelled, whereas Jala vasti is performed by sucking water through the tube. The tube should be around 4 inches in length and half an inch in diameter. 2 1/2 inches are inserted into the rectum. The entire abdominal viscera benefits from this treatment. It cures diseases related to elimi-nation and absorption. Chronic fatigue, swelling, acidity, constipation, anal fistula, haemorrhoid, in-flammations, ulcers of the intestines and asthma are cured with this treatment.

Neti: Neti is similar to Nasya (Errhine) in ayurveda, which is the cleansing for the supra-clavicular region, especially the sinuses. In yoga it is done in two different ways. The first one is with water and the second with a thread or catheter. Jala neti (nasal cleanse with water) is practiced in the morning. Lukewarm salted water is used to cleanse the sinuses with the help of the palm of the hand or a spouted coffee pot. The individual should lean forward, with tilted head and the water can be poured into one nostril, while breathing through the mouth. Let the water come out of the other nostril. Up to half a litre of water can be used for one side. The same is repeated on the other side. This is indicated in the diseases of the eye, nos-trils and headaches. The second type Sutra neti is performed with a catheter (size 7) after smearing ghee on it. It is inserted into one of the nostrils and taken out through the mouth slowly and carefully. Then holding on both ends by the hands, it is pulled gently to both directions alternately for around 10-15 times. After the therapy the catheter is taken out, washed and sterilised.

Kapala-bhati: This consists of a stable practice of pranayama. The breathing is performed forcibly and rapidly simulating the bellow of a blacksmith. It reduces increased kapha and improves agni and pitta. Kapala bhati literally means brightening the brain by optimising the circulation towards the brain and all other parts of the body. Trataka: Constant gazing at a bright flame improves focus and brightens up our mind. To make it cleansing, the eyes are kept open for prolonged time, hence, they are washed with tears. Trataka is the process of gazing at the ghee-lamp flame for 3 feet away at eye level around 5 minutes. After-wards the eyes are closed and palms are gently placed above them. This is similar to some of the therapis in ayurveda. Purifying and toning the eyes are achieved by this.

Mix the olive oil with grapefruit juice and shake it. 10.00 pm Drink the olive oil and grapefruit mix (straw is the easiest way) while you stand up. Take 4 ornithine tab-lets capsules (to help sleep) if you prefer.1) Lie down im-mediately after the drink (enables more stones to come out). 2) Keep still for the next 20 minutes. 3) Go to sleep. On waking up in the next morning: Drink 1/4 part of the epsom salt and water solution unless there is nausea/in-digestion. 2 hours later: Drink the last 1/4 part of the epsom salt so-lution. 2 hours later: Eat a light breakfast. Chew well. Sip water through out the cleansing period. Expect di-arrhoea in the morning. Look out for soft stones which usually float. They can be any colour including pea green. If there is any chaff floating this is probably some choles-terol crystals. Repeat every 2 weeks. Up to 2,000 stones can sometimes be cleared in people with bursitis, aller-gies and upper back pains.

Frequency: Once fortnightly, three times. For example: 1st, 15th and 29th of the month.

    Stomach Cleanse Kunjal Kriya

When: Mornings, on a rest day. Where: In a com-fortably warm room. Prepare: To eight cups of boiled water, add 3 tsps of salt. Allow to cool slightly. How: Drink the warm, salted water quickly as much as you can, until you start to feel nauseas. Stand and lean forward slightly. Within a few minutes you will start vomiting. If you dont vomit, press your abdomen with your forearm or tickle the back of your throat gently with a finger to induce vom-iting a few times. After: After vomiting rest and relax. Have moist, fresh, warm and light food and drinks for the next 12 hours (herbal teas, soups etc.)

Effects Of Kunjal Kriya: Kunjal kriya is the yogic practice of cleansing the stomach and respira-tory tract. Kunjal kriya can be translated as the elephant act. Just as an elephant does, kunjal involves drinking warm salted water then vom-iting it up complete-ly. It is an easy and natural way to cleanse our body from toxins. Many times in our life we suppress the urge to vomit whereas ba-bies have the right idea by vomiting freely to expel toxins. Kunjal eliminates mucusy (Kapha) toxins completely if done regularly. It has prov-en effective in many ailments such as hay fever, asthma, migraine, acidity, indigestion, cold and flu.

What are the possible complications? After drinking the salted water in extremely rare cases people find they cant vomit. This is usually due to fear or suppressed emotions. In this case the water will come out as urine or watery stools within 4-12 hours. Some may rarely experience mild abdominal discomfort for a few hours. Kunjal is so simple that even children from 12 yrs onwards can safely practice it. This practice is very safe as it doesnt involve strong herbs or drugs.

Contraindications: If you have a hernia, ulcer or high blood pres-sure, it is best to avoid Kunjal kriya unless under medical supervi-sion.

    RejuvenationRasayana

Rasayana -the wordRejuvenation is Rasayana in Ayurveda. Rasa means essence and here it stands for all dhatus. Bodi-ly tissues are the essence of carefully eaten food, right deeds and positive thoughts. Ayana means paths, channels or even the biochemical metamorphosis. Thus rasayana means the realigning and streamlining of dhatus and their circulation at the deepest possible level. This is an excellent method to attain perfect tissues. The concept of Rasayana is based on the principles of conservation and transmutation of energy. Rasayana therapy strives to improve physical, mental and moral qualities. It is designed to promote longevity and revive youthful qualities. Rasayana prevents aging, restores youthfulness, improves the complexion and voice, increases physical strength and immunity, preserves memory and intel-ligence, gives happiness to oneself and creates a life which is beneficial to others.

Rasayana -the goalCharaka says rasayana is conducive for a long healthy life, good memory, intelligence, immunity, youthfulness, excellent lustre, complexion, voice, stamina and strength and thus respectability, bril-liance and personal attraction. Rasayana helps us to restore the equilibrium of all doshas, digestive fire and ojas, and to remove sluggishness, exhaustion, exertion, lassitude, debility and drowsiness.

Rasayana -the typesThere are two methods of rasayana -hospitalised and non-hospitalised (Kutipraveshika & Vataatapi-ka). The first one is a major therapy, which requires sufficient physicians and helpers. The later is done in an outpatient department with proper guidance to a self-disciplined patient. Hospitalised Rasayana: Kuti-praveshika is a major therapy done under medical supervision in a spe-cial theatre or cottage (Kuti). Charaka samhita describes how it is built. The cottage should be in an auspicious ground, facing eastward or northward, and in a locality, which is inhabited by a king, phy-sicians, brahmins and holy saints, free from dangers, auspicious and with easy availability of neces-sary accessories. ___________________________________________________________________

The concept of Rasayana is based on the principles of conservation and transmformation of energy.Rasayana therapy strives to improve physical, mental & moral qualities. It is designed to promote longevity & revive youthful qualities.___________________________________________________________________

Theatre for the therapyIt should have sufficient space inside, a high ceiling, three concentric chambers, and proper ventila-tion, comfortable in all seasons, hygienic interior and exterior, free from noises and equipped with all necessary accessories. There should be enough expert healers, attendants, nurses, and brahmins. For male patients they should be males and for females they should be females. The client should be well informed and educated about the therapies he is undergoing, calm, happy and strong, mentally and physically, compassionate and having worshiped the gods and brahmins. They should be obedient to and having a good relationship with the physicians. They should also have open communication with the physicians. Non-hospitalised procedure: One who undergoes this rasayana therapy should observe celibacy, control of the sense organs, have a healthy diet, prop-er sleep and non-strenuous activities.

Rasayana -the herbsThere are thousands of rejuvenative herbs. Among them the best rejuvenatives are the fruits of hari-taki and amalaki (gooseberries). They are generally all-purpose, as they are purificatory and strength-

ening in their nature. They act on the whole body, namely, all tissues and organs. Modern research has shown that they have strong ingredients including anti-oxidants and immunostimulants. Even though, haritaki is more cleansing.

Mind and RasayanaPracticing one or all of the following is considered to be one of the best rasayana therapies. This is known as achara (behavioural) rasayana and gives all the previously mentioned benefits of rasayana. Here Charaka tells about a posititve mind set. Positive mindset encourages positve action and thus gives a positive result. Positive mindset is achieved through understanding the true purpose of life. Truthfulness, absence of anger, abstinence from addiction, active compassion, relaxation, calmness, sweetspoken-ness, cleanliness, perseverance, charity, simplicity, penance and unconditional love are aspects of positive mindset. Balanced activities, right sleep, leading a lifestyle according to the land, season and activities, rea-soning, unconceitedness, good behaviour to others, focus on spiritualism, obedience to elders (by age and wisdom), positive attitude, self control and devotion to holy scriptures are also behavioral rasayanas.

Some Powerful Rasayana formulas Brahma Rasayaba Chyavana Prasha Amalaka Rasayana Amalaka Ghrtam Amalaka Avaleham Amalakadi Churnam

Some single herb rasaanasGotu Kola (mandukaprni) juice with milk and licorice powder: promotes intellect and strength, agni, complexion, voice, intellect & life.

Long pepper (pippali): Five fruits of long pepper with honey and ghee for one year. This is also done with seven, eight or ten fruits. The paste of purified pippali (with the alkali of Beautia monosperma) with honey and ghee is taken in the morning, after and before breakfast. Indications: Preventive and curative in cough, asthma, wasting, phthisis, dyspnoea, hiccup, sinusitis, throat disorders, piles, ma-labsorption, tropical sprue, anaemia, intermittent fever, disorders of voice, chronic rhinitis, swelling, gulma (phantom pains/tumors) and vata valasaka (arthritis). Another procedure with long pepper is to take it for nineteen days starting with ten fruits and progressively increasing them by ten with milk for the first ten days. Then on the eleventh day onwards it should be reduced by 10 fruits progres-sively. One thus consumes 1000 pippali fruits. During this when the client is hungry he should take red rice with milk and ghee. This should be practiced by strong people by taking the paste, the week people by taking its powder and medium people by taking decoction. This promotes nutrition, voice, youthfulness, intellect and life span and alleviates spleen enlargements.

Triphala: Paste of triphala is spread on a new iron plate for 24 hours. This is collected and mixed with water and honey. This is used as rasayana. When this is digested, one should take a meal with ghee. This is practiced for one year. This is a strong brain tonic and best as a general preventative.

Shilajatu: Shilajatu is the purified exudate from the rocks of some special mountains. It is slightly sour and astringent and katu in Vipaka and moderate (neither hot nor cold) in virya. This is a good re-juvenative and is generally taken with suitable decoctions in vata, pitta and kapha. Shilajatu provides a happy life by alleviating aging problems, integrating body, and promoting intellect & memory. Avoid vidahi (heavy and heating which causes burning and acidity), heavy substances, intense and heating. Charaka says that there is no disease in the world which is not overcome by shilajatu.

    Fertility therapyVajikarana

The aim of Virilification is to enable a couple to produce healthy progeny who can help them to perform their dharma (lifes misson). -Chakra pani

Vaja means seed the sperm and ovum and Vaji means one with a healthy seed. Karana means making or preparing.

Vajik-arana involves practices and therapies, which endow a person with per-fect reproductive material (ovum or sperm). This is to ensure the conception of a healthy, intelligent, well- motivated child by ensuring healthy bodies and full sexual ecstasy at conception, the time when the childs constitution is deter-mined. Unfortunately this term vajikarana is reduced to just aphrodisiacs in many modern ayurvedic books. Vajikarana is much more that aphrodisiacs. Vajikarana herbs are tonics for both the male and female reproductive organs and they also excite the sexual organs which is more relevant to men since they have to maintain an erection for conception and they loose more sexual fluids than a woman does. ____________________________________________________________

Technically vajikarana therapy is used for men only. In all chapters dealing with vajikarana it seems to be a therapy meant for men for improving semen, poten-cy, erection etc. A similar therapy to women for similar purposes is described in ayurvedic gynecology and obstretics, known as Pumsavanam.Wisely named the ritual (savanam) on the male element of the sperm (pum), it is performed with 100% success even after conception. Pumsavanam is used to get the child of desired sex.____________________________________________________________

Vajikarana substancesThe most potent vajikarana substance is samkalpa, right imagination. Right fo-cus on the relationship and love between two hearts. Colours, aromas, herbs, formulations and specific therapies are also used to strengthen the shukra. The individuals constitution and disease tendencies and stages must be taken into account in order to prescribe the most suitable tonic.

Vajikarana -the goal The ultimate aim is to erase any disease tendencies or genetic weaknesses in the family. So the health of the parents and progeny is addressed in this therapy. It also looks at optimising sexual performance and mating compatibility. Technically vajikarana therapy is used for men only. In all chapters dealing with vajikarana it seems to be a therapy meant for men for improving semen, poten-cy, erection etc. A similar therapy to women for similar purposes is described in ayurvedic gynecology and obstretics, known as pumsavanam. Theoretically va-jikarana is meant for both sexes, since it is for increased fertility and virility. Thus fertility therapy is divided into vajikarana for men and pumsavana for women. A person with a number of offspring is compared to a beautiful tree with pro-

fuse branches and shade. It makes one strong and respectable within marriage according to Vedic society. One attains eternity based on filial tradition here and hereafter along with fame, fortune, strength and corpulence. All different kinds of diseases and therapies related to infertility are treated with vajikarana. Ayurvedic fertility centres are there in different parts of India today. Vajikarana also deal with direct nourishment of the sperm or ovum. The quality and quan-tity of reproductive fluid, and libido can be improved through this therapy. Since shukra (sperm & ovum) is the end product of metabolism, to strengthen it all other dhatus have to be strengthened. If the client is already healthy with good agni and balanced doshas, some specific internal medications may be suf-ficient. Otherwise clients may need a complete set of therapies beforehand.

    ____________________________________________________________

Any substance that is sweet, unctuous, life-promoting, nourishing, heavy and pleas-ing to the mind is to be regarded as vajikarana. - Charaka Samhita____________________________________________________________

The treatment generally starts with promotion of agni (dipana and pacana) and a relaxed life style. In the next stage a suitable purification is done. After the rest period, after he regains their strength, Vajikarana therapies will be done. They may involve internal or external oleation (snehana), sweating (svedana) and spe-cific internal formulations generally in ghee or palm sugar medium. Powders, bhasmas and asavas are also available for this purpose. During the treatment strict celibacy should be practiced. After this sufficient rest is given.

Vajikarana -food Milk, dates, figs, honey, almonds, ghee, red rice, basmati rice and saffron are good vajikaranas. A date and milk shake in the evening has been proven effective as a daily aphrodisiac. Preparations from sprouted urad dhal are excellent for women. Urad and rice pudding is also an ancient aphrodisiac.

Vajikarana -herbsFor Men Anacyclus pyrethrum, ashwagandha, cloves, garlic, saffron, ghee, gin-seng, tribulus terrestris, licorice, almonds, macuna prurata urad dhal and ashwa-gandha (powder or jam). For women Aloe vera, ashwagandha, asparagus racemosus, black haw, dong quai, fennel seeds, licorice, nettles, saffron, shatavari, vitex-agnus castus, urad dhal, black sesame seeds are effective.

He underwent sneha and sveda therapies. He received a sequence of fourteen vastis. After the rest period Ashwagandhadi le-ham was given for two months. Begetting a child of desired sexPum-savana

Pumsavana is the scientific method of begetting a child of desired sex. Pum means the male and savana means a ritual or to control. The spermatozoa is the deciding factor in the sex of the fetus. Through pum-savana, we are working with the female and male chromosoms, before the sex of the progenyis determined in the uterus, to beget a child of desired sex. This is absolutely harmless and 100% effective according to specialists. Interestingly the main therapy can also be done even after conception, during the first month of pregnancy. The steps of treatment are summarized as follows:

STAGE 1 ~ Preconception balancing and toning Couples undergo suitable mental, emotional and bodily purification, by pacify-ing any existing health problem and specific cleansing and balancing. Treatment is also done for any present and past diseases.

STAGE 2 ~ Preconception cleansingSpecific Panchakarma, Rasayana and Vajikarana programs, diet and lifestyle to empower the whole body especially the sperm an ovum.

STAGE 3 Once the female is pregnant, the main therapy is done. It should be started within the first 4 weeks of pregnancy. Special nasal and internal medicines and a milk decoction are the main medicines. When the Pushya star (according to the Indian Calendar) is prominent in the sky, administration of these medications is done, if it is performed before conception. If one desires a baby boy, the nasal medication should be instilled in the right nostril and the use of it in left nostril gives a baby girl.

TAGE 4 The mother are monitored throughout the pregnancy. To prevent and deal with any imbalances, specific internal medications are given. This also prevents any sort of abnormalities to the fetus. There are herbs indicated during every month. Cows milk, ghee, gotu kola, shatavari, licorice, sida rhombifolia, gold, vitalisers like jeevaniya group of herbs and red rice are some substances which are used as individual or compound medications at different stages of treatment.

Case Study: A woman 34 years of age, 6 weeks pregnant, with 3 daughters, de-sired a son. Both husband and wife are from strongly female dominating fami-lies. Treatment started a month after conception. A milk decoction was given for nasal drops and a drink made from licorice, the bark of a fig tree, Withania somnifera and Sida rhombifolia for a period of 6 weeks. To her delight, she gave birth to two healthy boys in due time.

Thousands of years ago in the cradle of civilizations, mother India conceived a natural ayurvedic approach to nurture parents and babies through the journey of creation. Planned ParenthoodMaking the decision to have a child is momentous. It is to decide forever to have your heart go walking around outside your body. ~ Elizabeth Stone.

For many, the time to have a child is thrust upon them rather than consciously chosen. Some say theres never a perfect time to have a child but that fate schedules it, along with the moment of birth and death. Couples ambivalent about having children rather than following a calling may be called up to parental duty by destiny. Others can eagerly prepare for a child who never appears. Ayurveda sees children as a precious gift from the gods to be welcomed whether invited or not. They are gurus who can prompt parents to cultivate qualities that may have otherwise lay dormant, virtues like unconditional love. In many ancient cultures becoming a parent is considered an enriching rite of passage, a momentous milestone presenting an opportunity for spiritual growth and deeper relationships. As Peter De Vries appreciated The value of marriage is not that adults produce children but that children produce adults. Though the prospect of parenting may seem overwhelming many couples say that once they arose to meet the challenge and accepted the lifestyle adjustment the blessings far outweighed the sacrifices.

Preparing psychologically and physically for the little angels arrival optimises the mother and childs state through the childbearing process. Just as a healthy seed bears healthy fruit, if the parents sperm and ovum are pure then the child is more likely to inherit a strong constitution and immunity. Conversely if parents conceive when mentally or physically weak this may impact negatively on the childs condition. With the intention of giving their child the happiest and healthiest genetic inheritance ayurveda suggests parents observe a preconception regime called vajikarana. The ancient text Charaka Samhita explains- The aim of vajikarana is to enable a couple to produce healthy progeny who can assist them to perform their lifes mission (dharma). About six months before conception an ayurvedic physician prescribes a personalised purification and rejuvenation regime for the couple to ensure optimal ovum and sperm quality and quantity.

This may include lifestyle changes, a nutrition plan, herbs, cleanses, yoga and meditation.

The couple avoids chemicals such as in food or personal care products and wean off pharmaceutical medicine when possible. Energising exercises also increase fertility and virility but must be done in moderation. To prepare the womb room for the special guest women can balance their menstrual cycle and take cleansing and fortifying herbs and supplements. Essential fatty acids, Calcium, Magnesium, Folic acid, Iron, B12, B6 and Zinc are particularly vital to prevent birth defects. General female tonics include Shatavari (Asparagus racemosus), Ashoka (Saraca indica). Men are advised to take virilizing herbs such as Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera), Sariba (Hemidesmus indicus) and Kapi Kachu (Mucuna pruriens). There are also many compound formulations for optimum fertility. The efficacy of these can be seen at the specialist infertility centre at Keralas Shoranur Ayurveda Samajam where they claim a 95% success rate with couples wanting to conceive. General reproductive tonic foods recommended include warm unhomogenised milk, ghee, yoghurt, black sesame seeds, urad dal, mung dal, honey, dates, almonds, ginger, garlic, onions and saffron. Hot spices should be avoided. Daily self massage and sufficient rest is observed to charge the body with positive hormones.

Couples who share their expectations, excitement and fears about having a child will forge deeper bonds of understanding to sustain them through the experience. Couples who attune their desires for parenthood are more mentally ready for the new phase of their life and are less likely to resent

the sacrifices and compromises that may be demanded. Sharing the commitment to create a loving and supportive environment makes it a more positive experience for all. This is the time to iron out any relationship rifts by spending quality time together aligning hearts and future intentions realizing that a happy couple are more likely to make happy parents, transmitting contented energy to their receptive baby. Spending time together around babies can reinforce the realities and joys of the decision for them both. Another way to build excitement is to think of their childs character

and envisage a fulfilling future for the family unit. Though this may not manifest precisely it builds a positive expectation that inspires couples to maintain faith and enthusiasm through any trials. This shared sankalpa or powerful intention for a beloved baby also generates a powerful magnetic attraction for the soul to enter the womb. Love is the best libido booster to set the mood according to ayurvedic sage Charaka who says the best aphrodisiac for a man is a woman who loves him.
