Winter 2012 | Quarterly AYS Newsletter of the Mt. Olive SDA Church “New Beginnings” The start of a new year means different things to different people. It's been said, "An optimist stays up until midnight to see the New Year in. A pessimist stays up to make sure the old year leaves." As we begin this New Year, both in AYS and as a church family, we look forward optimistically to what God has in store. Allow us to give you a spiritual check list of what you could do to make 2012 your best year: 1. Maintain regular prayer time each day 2. Read through the Bible 3. The start of a new year means different things
to different people. It's been said, "An optimist stays
up until midnight to see the New Year in. A pessimist
stays up to make sure the old year leaves." As we begin
this New Year, both in AYS and as a church family, we
look forward optimistically to what God has in store.
Allow us to give you a spiritual check list of what you
could do to make 2012 your best year:
1. Maintain regular prayer time each day
2. Read through the Bible
3. Choose to be thankful in every circumstance
4.Trust God for what you cannot see
5. Forgive yourself and others (and don't turn
back for another look)
Your AYS department is looking forward to God doing
great things for the awesome young people of our
church this year. It's time for new beginnings!

It is very common to see television shows, such as "The View" or "The Talk", that feature the thoughts and opinions of women on everyday issues. But it is highly unusual to hear those same concepts discussed from "brothers’ perspectives." This was what inspired Drake Barber and DJ Productions to develop a talk show based on the perspective of four black, Christian men from Mt. Olive: Drake Barber, Duane Dunkley, Todd Richardson, and Fernon Woodbine. "This will be a show that takes a whole new spin on life" says Mr. Barber, "especially since it’s coming from four brothers." We are so excited for this new venture and know that God is going to bless! Please come out and show your support at the first taping on Sabbath, January 28th. You will not want to miss this one of a kind program that will keep you talking!

You have heard AYS say over and over again how proud we are of the young people of Mt. Olive. This year we want to continue highlighting the various ways that God is blessing them and allowing them to excel wherever they are. This quarter's newsletter highlights two young women who have stepped out on faith and been blessed as a result.
Many of us have watched Kelley Dunson (affectionately known as "KB") spiritually grow and mature throughout her years at Mt. Olive. She is now a student at Oakwood University in Huntsville, Alabama. Kelley just recently completed a very difficult nursing exam to determine admittance to Oakwood University's nursing program. We are pleased to report that God has blessed Kelley to successfully pass the nursing exam and receive admittance into the nursing program! She testifies that it was God who blessed her and allowed her to be where she is today.
Lyteka Camel (affectionately known as “Teka”) is also no stranger to the Mt. Olive family, being a member for much of her life. Lyteka is a graduate of Oakwood University with a degree in Communications. Just recently, she stepped out on faith and went to California to pursue her dream of working in television and film. While there, God has opened doors for Teka. She was blessed with an offer of a full internship with CBS and has accepted. We look forward to seeing Lyteka’s work on television one day!
All praises and glory go to God for the work He has done and will continue doing through his youth.
“Dr.” Shakirah Reynolds!
Shakirah Shabazz-Reynolds, the Associate Director of AYS, was recently awarded an Ed.S degree, in Teaching and Learning: English Education from Georgia State University. Shakirah is currently a teacher at Charles R. Drew Charter School, where she focuses on motivating young people to do their very best. We are proud of Dr. Reynolds and glad to have her as part of the AYS team!
