The W heatbelt tow n of B everley is 130
kilom etres south east of Perth on the Avon
R iver. Founded in 1838, B everley is one
of W estern A ustralias oldest settlem ents.
Today B everley is a quiet agricultural
tow n w ith a proud history. For visitors it
is a chance to experience life in a classic
country tow n. Stroll dow n the m ain street
and adm ire the variety of architectural
styles such as A rt D eco (Tow n H all, H otel
B everley & O ld Infant H ealth C entre), Pre-
Federation (C ourt H ouse & U nion B ank
building), Federation G eorgian (Police
C ottages), and the R ailw ay Station built
in the Victorian Tudor style
w hich is now an art gallery.
Beverley Aeronautical MuseumD uring the S econd W orld W ar an
airfield w as built at B everley, and to
com m em orate this undertaking, visitors
entering from the north w ill find the tow n
guarded by a D e H avilland Vam pire Jet
fighter. A second Vam pire Jet is m ounted
outside the aeronautical m useum ,
featuring rem ains of the engine of the
Flying Flea and num erous other artifacts
pertaining to flight. A large photographic
display characterizes

of flight in W estern

Dead Finish Museum
The m useum is hom e to the B everley
H istorical Society, w ith the display featuring
early settlem ent in the region. The building

Fergusons Vintage Machinery
A w onderful collection of antique and
vintage m achinery is housed at Fergusons

Avondale Discovery Farm
Avondale D iscovery Farm is one of
W estern Australias unique attractions and
the pride of agri-tourism in the A von Valley.
Established in the 1850s, Avondale is
now a property under the N ational Trust of
Australia (W A) banner, thus ensuring this
unique site w ill rem ain for the enjoym ent
and education of future generations.
Avondale is a w orking farm and a fine
exam ple of sustainable agriculture in
action, w ith visitors being able to enjoy aw ide range of activities. The A gricultural
M achinery M useum is a place of
education, show casing the developm ent
of m echanisation in agriculture in the
W heatbelt. It is also a great place to
have fun. There are anim als including

The B everley Tractor Pull is held in February,

old Race C ourse and is run by the Perth
Tractor Pull Association. The venue features

Theatre
The cultural hub of B everley has recently
been expanded to include a m ajestic
outdoor theatre w hich adjoins the railw ay
staion platform . The theatre w as officially
opened in m agnificent style in M arch 2011
w ith a gala event, includ ing the 20 piece
M etro B ig B and. The region is looking
forw ard to another sum m er season of
perform ances, including m ovies, m usic,
dance and dram a.
The B everley Station Arts hosts an
Artist in R esidence Program w ith regular
w orkshops and exhibitions run by the
visiting artisits.
A concert has been planned in N ovem ber
to coincide w ith the B everley H arvest
Festival and a fam ily C hristm as concert.

sm all country tow n that offers a range
of accom m odation, great barista coffee,
good places to eat as w ell as a variety
of attractions, fun things to do, history,
shopping, art and com prehensive essential
services.
G oom alling is rich in the history that saw
Australia settled and thrive in the late
1800s and 1900s. As the Sw an River
C olony grew pastoral leases began opening
up the Avon Valley. Sheep grazing w asthe prim ary activity and as C onditional
Purchase lots w ere sold clearing of the
land saw grain grow ing flourish in this
fertile and reliable rainfall area. O ver the
years Industrialisation has im pacted on
the landscape w ith the sm aller farm labour
intensive practices replaced by autom ated
m achinery. Larger paddocks and farm s,
resulting in few er farm s and a decline in
population from the 70s to the 90s. G rain
and the storage of this prim ary industry is
a com m onality for the tow ns in the Avon
and the facilities have grow n from hands
onto high tech evident
in the diversity of
C ooperative B ulk H andling
structures found in the Valley and the w ider
W heatbelt. As you approach the tow nsite of
G oom alling the dolly tw insstand out like
a beacon, the only grain storage structure
of their kind in the S outhern H em isphere.
These iconic dom es, built in 1994, stand
alongside the A type storage popular in
the 60s. Just as diverse as these storage
facilities is the variety of grains now
grow n in the W heatbelt. C ereal crops are
interspersed w ith the vibrant gold of the
C anola and grey green foliage of the lupins.A w alk around the tow n provides a
snapshot of building styles over the
decades of European settlem ent of
Australia. From the m odern tilt up concrete
construction of the new C om m unity C entre
to the heritage listed R ailw ay Station
and Post O ffice; and just 2.5 km s out
of tow n the S later H om estead the first
settlem entbuilt in 1856. H om es, halls and
offices show the developm ent of building
construction and com m unity and fam ily
use.
Jennacubbine
A visit to Jennacubbine, located betw een
N ortham , Toodyay and G oom alling, is a
m ust. The playground area and delicious
m eals at the Jennacubbine Tavern m ake
it a very fam ily friendly destination, plus
theres a pool room , B B Q area, shaded
garden and accom m odation for those fond
of a drink or tw o. The Jenna H all, typical
of com m unity halls built in the 50s, is put
to good use by the local com m unity and
is available for hire. St Isidores C atholic
C hurch w as built in 1907 and celebrates
M ass once a m onth. The C W A building is a
quaint little building built in 1953 for 119.
Konnongorring
The G abby Q uoi Q uoi Lookout provides a
view of som e of the extensive revegetation
w ork done in the area by local farm ers,
w hich nature lovers and conservationists
w ill be sure to adm ire. Stretch your legs
on a little stroll around the sm all tow n of
K onnongorring and youll see tw o churches.
St M ichael the A rchangelRom an C atholic
C hurch built in 1929 a quaint church (w hich
is now a private residence), and C hrist
C hurch the U niting and Anglican C hurch
built in 1961. C hrist C hurch has about four

services a year. The extensive open
grain silos reflect the im portance
of harvesting to the area. This little
rural com m unity space w ould not
be com plete w ithout a hall w hich
w as built in around 1930, just
adjacent is the public toilets for
travellers convenience. A picnic
table and chairs is set am ongst the
revegetation behind the hall and Fire
Station.
Nature
O ak P ark R eserve is one of
G oom allings m any reserves and
picnic spots. The natural and
cultural heritage of the reserve and
surrounding area is outlined on
shaded picnic table, B B Q and
toilet are w ell m aintained to ensure
your picnic is pleasurab le. O rchids
and w ildflow ers can abound in w inter and
spring tim e.
The M ortlock R iver R est Stop, 10km s w est
of G oom alling is a spectacular piece of
bushland especially in W inter/Spring. The
river level is dependent on rainfall and can
provide a haven for w aterbirds. The rocky
riverbed is picturesque dry but provides
stunning shots w hen the w ater trickles or
floods over the rocks. The R est Stop has
a long drop toilet and 24 hour cam ping is
allow ed. Insect repellent recom m ended.

The patterned paddocks during seeding
tim e (April July) m ake a pretty patchw ork
bordered by native vegetation reserves
and country roads. The lush green vistas

w ildflow ers from July till Septem ber. Just
before harvest the landscape is a rich
tapestry of colour bold yellow canola
alongside striking green pastures and
crops, the jew el-like colours contrasting
w ith the blue sky on the w ide horizon.

G oom alling an array of gold, ochre, red and
russet.

Slater Homestead
B uilt in 1856, this picturesque and historicstone and m ud brick d w elling w as the first
developm ent in G oom alling and displays
the resourcefulness of W A pioneers.
Today the H om estead offers the sam e
quality hospitality to travellers and
residents. The H om estead precinct
is a com m unity space but also offers
accom m od ation and light refreshm ents.
The site is ow ned by the local governm ent
and co-m anaged by the Slater H om estead
G roup. The S chool R oom is hom e to the

D om R osendo Salvado in 1847, the tow n

the longest of its kind in Australia. This is

133km w hite w ater race for paddle and
m otor craft.
Aboriginal Heritage
W e acknow ledge the people of the
B allardong tribe, w ho are part of the
N yungar race and have inhabited this area
since long before E urop ean settlem ent.
The A von R iver (G ulgulga B ilya) has
retained its cultural significance to the
traditional N yungar people of N ortham and
there are num erous Aboriginal heritage
sites along its banks. The D orntj Koorliny
(N yungar for w alking together) w alking
trail follow s the river banks and offers an
insight into som e of this history. M ore
inform ation is available at the Visitor
C entre.
Historic Buildings
European settlers started to take up
holdings in the area in the early 1830s,
w hen surveyor Ensign D ale noted
the fertility of the land, particularly in
com parison to the sandy plains of the
settlem ents around P erth.
The tow n of N ortham w as gazetted in
1836 and, in W estern Australia, is second
only to Frem antle for the num ber of
heritage listed buildings.
The W est N ortham R ailw ay Station w asbuilt shortly after the E astern G oldfields
R ailw ay reached N ortham in O ctober 1886.
D uring the w ar years m any servicem en
passed through the stations doors on their
w ay to the N ortham Arm y Training C am p,
w hich is still in use tod ay. The R ailw ay
Station H eritage P recinct & M useum is
open to the public daily and houses a
range of displays depicting N ortham s
diverse cultural and environm ental heritage.

The Avon Valley A rts Societys art gallery
is located w ithin the N ortham Visitor

The Visitor C entre also hosts the Sense of
Place M igrant Exhibition, w hich recounts
the history and personal stories of the
m igrants w ho w ere relocated to N ortham

inform ation on the local Aboriginal fam ilies
w ho inhabited the area before W hite
Settlem ent
M ore cultural displays are exhibited at the
O ld R ailw ay Station M useum H eritage

Tracks and Trails
The Kep Track(G ep is N yungar for w ater)
is a m ulti-use track that stretches som e
70 kilom etres from N ortham to M undaring.
This trail is suitable for w alking, cycling and
horse riding. The Track m ainly follow s a rail
reserve w ith low gradient and com pacted
gravel surface. W ith plenty of access and
parking areas along the route, there are
options for short w alks and bush outings
or you can take the train to N ortham to
com plete the entire trail w ith overnight
stops. The track is w ell m arked w ith
interesting interpretation signs along the
route and is spectacular in its array of
vegetation and w ildflow ers, including areas
of w etlands. The Visitor C entre also has

The Mt Ommanney Walking Tracksoffer
spectacular view s from every aspect, but
are generally suitable for people w ith a
reasonable level of fitness, as the terrain
can be rocky and steep. The clim b from
the b ase of the M ount is 1km w ith an
8 degree rise, and there are other track
options available. It is possible to drive to
the top of M t O m m anney if the w alk proves
too challenging.
The Dorntj Koorliny Trackfollow s the
banks of the Avon R iver and is in total som e
18km in length. The track, nam ed after
the Aboriginal term for w alking together,
incorporates significant Aboriginal H eritage
listed sites w ith inform ation provided en
route. B urlong P ool is one such site and
is believed to be the hom e of the W argal
[serpent]. The w alk to the pool w ill enable
you to truly experience all that the river
has to offer, and there are picnic facilities
at Burlong Park, w hich is also accessible
by vehicle. For those less energetic or
constrained by tim e, undertaking only the
around the bridgescom ponent of the
track, w hich is sealed, is w ell w orthw hile.
The Clackline Walking Trailscom m ence
from the C lackline tow nship som e
20km w est of N ortham on the G reat
Eastern H ighw ay, and range in length
from 1km to 8km s. The trails feature a
range of attractions, including historic
rail bridge, historic sites and w ildflow ers.

in the area.

tow nsite on the banks of the Avon R iver,

location had its ow n problem s, at least as
far as the postal system w as concerned,
w ith m ail arriving in N ew castle in N ew South
W ales, so in 1911 the nam e Toodyay w as
adopted for the current tow nship. The
nam e Toodyayis believed to have been
derived from the Aboriginal w ord Duidgee
m eaning place of plenty.

Moondyne J oe
Toodyays identity has been shaped by
the escapades of Joseph B olitho Johns,
know n as M oondyne Joe,a convict w ho
becam e a notorious bushranger and escape
artist. Transported to Australia in 1853 as
a convict, Johns lived in the w ild hills of
Toodyay in an area know n as M oondyne
Springs.Arrested for stealing a horse in
1861, M oondyne Joe escaped from the
C onvict D epot lock-up. Joe becam e abushranger, holding up a store in Toodyay
and spending years on the run from the
for Joe, including a sensational breakout
from Frem antle P rison.
Today the tow n holds the annual M oondyne
Festival w hich includes a re-enactm ent of
his escape.
Newcastle Gaol Museum
The N ew castle G aol w as built in the 1862
using convict labour and has recently
undergone extensive restoration and

Connors Mill
B uilt for the Irish ex-convict D aniel C onnor
in 1870, C onnors M ill tow ers above Stirling
Terrace. The building originally served as a
as a pow er station. Today the M ill serves as
a public m useum , displaying w orking m illing
m achinery that dem onstrates how the early
highlight of this beautifully restored building
once served London in the B litz and now
serves as the engine that drives the m ill.
C onnors M ill is dedicated to the agricultural
history of the Avon region.
Walk Trails
There are several different w alk trails for
those w ho just w ant a leisurely stroll to
longer trails for the m ore energetic.
The Living H istoryw alk is a self guided
w alk through the historic tow nsite
show casing the tow ns rich architectural
history, from the earliest Pensioner G uard
cottages to the Art D eco buildings of the

The Toodyay Agricultural Show held
in O ctober offers not only the chance to
enjoy the am bience of a country show , a
skies but it also offers a chance for anyone
w ho so w ishes to enter their livestock,
arts, crafts and produce. The program
is available in Septem ber each year so
m aybe if you w ant to enjoy the full show
