Software Certification Considerations Under ARINC 661ARINC 661 was introduced almost 12 years ago with the fundamentalobjective of mitigating the cost of increasingly sophisticated cockpitdisplay systems. With the cost of flight safety certification for software
coming in at anywhere from $50 - $300 per line of code, the overheadof ARINC 661 might have seemed counterintuitive. In reality thoughARINC 661 provides strategic benefits and reduces risk for certificationinherently through its architecture and the promotion of best practicessuch as software modeling and qualifiable tools supported by DO-178C/ED-12C.
