A concept adapted to the needs of civil helicopter pilots and their missions Avionics 2020 is the result of a number of partnerships, spearheaded by Thales with researchers, scientific institutions and world class experts over a number of years. Its aim is to refine understanding in the field of human-machine interface. These efforts, culminated into a new generation cockpit founded on the principles of natural and direct hands-on interaction, designed to give the pilot all the elements needed to make the right critical decisions at the right time.

Avionics 2020 is perfectly suited to the needs of modern helicopter fleets, which require the same platform to fulfill many different types of missions, whilst maintaining the highest possible safety standards. Moderm helicopter cockpits need to integrate ever more complex and varied onboard functions according to each mission profile.

As a result, the helicopter cockpit of the futur will need to quickly adapt to mission types, flight rules and crew configurations, and to generally be a more flexible and versatile instrument.

As a mission centric concept therefore, Avionics 2020 is designed with the pilot in mind. As the number of mission types increase, additional burdens are placed on pilots, who are expected to perform more tasks. Avionics 2020 easily integrates future capabilities and functions to optimize and secure a wide range of helicopter missions, also taking into account specific functionalities driven by civil mission types such as Search And Rescue, Ermergency Medical Services or offshore missions.

Avionics 2020 is the result of a number of partnerships, spearheaded by Thales with researchers, scientific institutions and world class experts over a number of years. Its aim is to refine understanding in the field of human-machine interface. These efforts, culminated into a new-generation cockpit founded on the principles of natural and direct hands-on interaction, designed to give the pilot all the elements needed to make the right critical decisions at the right time.

The 2020 concept introduces a modern and effective cockpit architecture which integrates a large, secure display area associated with several reconfigurable means of control; including multi-touchscreen capabilities and head-down controls, which offer pilots an intuitive interaction solution comprising all aircraft systems and functions.

Another important design philosophy behind Avionics 2020 is openness. Thales came up with this concept in order to help airframers and operators build the cockpit architecture that best suits their needs. Avionics 2020 achieves this with its Open Modular Avionics Concept. This is simply the ability to integrate any third party system or function into the cockpit architecture. In addition to this groundbreaking philosophical leap, other critical factors are built into the concept in order to make it a success; chief of which is a mature and EASA-proven incremental certification process which reduces the integration and certification costs all along the lifecycle of the cockpit, therefore helping its inherent capability for newer functions to be added as required and as they are developed.

Because the cockpit’s future proofing is built into its very foundations, in addition to IFR Iow altitude Required Navigation Performance Authorization Required (RNP AR) or Localizer Performance with Vertical guidance (LPV) approaches; Avionics 2020 is conceived with SESAR/NexGen and Cleansky in mind. Anticipating the futur complexities of the skies is one of Thales’s key strenghts in the Air Traffic Management market, where the Group is a world leader.
