SUPPORT YOUR JEWISH ASSOCIATION

OF THE PHILIPPINES

Do you know that membership in the Jewish Association of the Philippines only costs PHP18,000 per year for a

family and PHP14,000 per year for sin-gles? Do you know that this small amount goes to paying for all the

Shabaton lunches, dinners, events, salaries, lights, maintenance and up-keep of the building. And in addition

to all this, your Jewish Association does a lot of charity work.

SCHOOL/GAN STARTS

The Rabbi and Rabbanit rushed back from their vacation in Israel to prepare for the opening of the Gan. With help from the community, they were able to open the school for pre-schoolers on time,

July 19. It has been a rousing success. At least 10 children attend daily with more signed up for later starts once the parents vacations are over. As you can see from the pictures, there is lots of arts and

crafts. There are bible stories, readings, Hebrew taught. All classes are in English. Secular classes include math, numbers, shapes and colors, and reading.

We are very lucky this year to have the Rabbanit’s sister as a teacher. She is a qualified

Kindergarten teacher. We have a second teacher plus of course the Rabbi and Rabbanit. We have helpers for the children.

There are many exciting lessons and trips planned.

My Bat Mitzvah My family and friends’ encouragement made it possible for the Bas

Mitzvah to have meaning to me and to remember that I am doing this for myself, my grandparents, my parents and especially for G-d.

My Daddy, Mommy and my friends that love me helped in every little way and that’s what made it special, the help and encouragement they did made the feeling of having my Bat Mitzvah special, and to keep the feeling in our hearts to never give up in G-d and in hope.

I want to thank John Berry for taking pictures at my special event. -Belinda Fragman-

Professor Jonathan Goldstein

Our community was blessed to receive a visit from Professor Goldstein and for him to give a talk. It was extremely interesting. He spoke about the book he is working on which covers the history of the Jewish communities in Harben, Singapore and

Manila. Professor Goldstein is Professor of East Asian History at the University of West Georgia since 1981 and Research Associate of Harvard University’s John K. Fair-

bank Center for Chinese Studies [formerly Fairbank Center for East Asian Research] since 1985. He has many Awards, Fellowships and research grants. A few of which are the Fulbright-Hays Fellowship, National Endowment for the Humanities grant for research conference on “Jewish Diasporas in China: Comparative and Historical Perspectives,” Harvard University Fairbank Center, Yad Vashem grant and many

many more.

BAGELBOYS JULY 4TH CELEBRATION AND MEMORIAL

The Bagelboys, who claim to be the second largest Jewish Organization in the Philippines, celebrated July 4 in Ron’s house in Angeles City. They started with a memorial to Stephen

Rosenberg. After the memorial, they started the barbeque and fun was had by all.

BOOKS FROM OUR LIBRARY

Every month we will review a book which is in our library. We encourage eve-ryone to use our library. According to Rabbi Talmid, we have the largest library

in Southeast Asia. It is here for your reading and learning pleasure.

Congratulations to the Graduates

Raya Camille Gilan graduated from Bais Yaacov High School in Denver

Colorado

Blake Cassey Blumenthal graduated from Southville International School

International Baccalaureate Program

A truly excellent beginning for young readers and also adults just beginning an exploration of the Jewish Torah to learn the narrative of the Jewish past, present and future. This history faithfully adheres to the spirit of the Scriptures without being im-bued with an anti-religious bias or any attempts to diminish the sanctity of the Torah. Throughout the narrative runs a a 'thread of blue' a holy narrative of divine destiny running through the history of the Jewish people. This will guide the Jewish child to not only feel a great pride and dignity in the past, present and future of her people, but also answer the great question that will perplex him or her, in this time of the nations questioning the existence of the Jewish people and the Jewish state. This digest also complements the Bible with other traditional sources such as the Talmud and Midrash. Thus we read of Nim-rod's attempts to have Abram killed, the death of Nimrod at the hands of Esau. That Osnat, the princess who Joseph married from Potiphar's household was Osnat, the daughter of Joseph's sister Dina And the incident where Pharaoh put the young child Moses to the test of putting a gold nugget or a coal into his

mouth and putting the burning coal into his mouth saved his life but gave him a speech im-pediment for life. Also includes handy timelines, maps and family charts as appendi at the back of the book.

AVON HAS MOVED

Since the early 1980’s, when the new Synagogue was opened in Makati, the building the Synagogue was in has been rented by Avon. We have been very fortunate that for all these years the rental was able to cover most of the Synagogue’s overhead.

As of December 1, they left. We are actively trying to rent the building. In the mean-time, we need all the help we can get. We need families and individuals who are not members to join. We will annualize all membership dues to begin January 1,

2010. If you have paid already for part of 2010, we will pro rate. But all dues will be-gin starting January 1. Please also update all of your membership information includ-

ing birthdays, anniversaries, Yahrzeits. Any help we can get to rent the building will be greatly appreciated. Information is below. Location: 1963 Taft Avenue Corner of Quirino Avenue

Floor Area: 1,500 sqm over 2 floors

Building available from December 1,2009. There is parking in the front of the building.

For BPO/Call Center it can seat 330.

Located conveniently near many Universities, like dela Salle.
