Message From Rabbi
Sensitivity to the communal rhythms of loss and comfort in the Jewish calendar develops the
individual’s ability to express personal loss and tap into sources of comfort and renewal. In the
heat of the summer, we enter the cycle of mourning with the fast on the Seventeenth of Tam-
muz (Tuesday June 25) which begins the three week period that ends with a full day of mourn-
ing on the Ninth of Av (evening of July 15-16), commemorating the multiple destructions that
befell our people. This is immediately followed by a seven week period of comfort and spiri-
tual renewal that culminates with Rosh Hashanah.
During this period, I have been teaching a three week series titled, “Turning to Tradition in
Times of Loss.” In the first session we studied the rituals surrounding death and mourn-
ing. Our rabbinic leaders' demonstrated keen psychological sensitivity when shaping rituals
surrounding death, burial, and mourning. They carefully structured the mourning process into
periods -- the time between death and burial, the first week, month and year -- guiding the in-
dividual through the different waves of grief. By studying these rituals we examined rabbinic
views of life and death, and the program of comfort and healing they laid out for us.
It has been an honor to work with our dedicated Chevra Kadisha. This is a group of people
who provides all of the rituals associated with honoring the dead, culminating in burial. By
carefully adhering to these honored rites, this sacred community has maintained and transmit-
ted the wisdom inherent in our great tradition, even as we meet the unique challenges of our
time.
The world-view of our great sages was still limited by circumstance. Thus, due to the high
rate of infant mortality the rabbis did need not require mourning an infant who died before
thirty days. What was originally legislated out of compassion by preventing parents from be-
ing saddled by the burdens of the ritual; in our day, such a pragmatic approach ignores the
grief associated with the death of an infant or miscarriage. Even in our own day, such a loss is
dubbed "invisible" when it lacks a ritual response that allows the parents to grieve and receive
support and comfort from the community. In our second class, we studied how the develop-
ment of Jewish law and ritual in the Conservative movement sought to correct this griev-
ance. Rabbi Amy Eilberg, my mentor, writes in a legal response for the Committee of Jewish
Law and Standard of the Conservative Movement that using Jewish ritual to mourn a miscar-
riage “communicate(s) powerfully to the family that this loss was real, and that the Jewish
community understands and wants to provide support as the bereavement process gradually
unfolds.” (rabbinicalassembly.org, 1991). This is one of many examples of how the female
voice in the rabbinate provides unique insight into our people's spiritual needs.
Much of Judaism, practice and belief, is born out of our people's response to the experience of
exile from Israel after the destructions of the first and second Temples in 586 BCE and 70
CE. In our third session on July 10 at 6:30 pm, we will study the theology associated with
Tisha B'Av to analyze how it has sustained our people for millennia and we will evaluate its
utility in a post-Holocaust age.
The rabbis teach, "All who mourn for Jerusalem, will be rejoice with her." (Ta'anit 30b) May
we take a proactive stance to face the loss that exists in our lives on a communal and personal
level. May we turn to the Jewish tradition for strength as we confront such loss. May we
strengthen one another as we gather together as a supportive Jewish community. Thus, as we
enter the High Holidays with an awareness of the pain in our lives and a heightened sensitivity
to others, we shall be prepared for renewal, comfort and growth.
Family Shabbat In May, we had Friday night services and Shabbat dinner at the Rabbi’s house. Mrs. Barkan cooked up a storm. We celebrated the joys of Shabbat together: The
kids did a pre-Shabbat activity of decorating the patio with Jewish symbols. We sang, ate, and prayed.
Every Friday night and Saturday morning we have family-friendly
services. Once a month we enjoy Shabbat dinner together, too. We hope you join us this Shabbat!

Dear AA Synagogue;
Backpack Buddies is such a blessing for our students. Please thank your packers, delivery persons, and your congregation for
their generosity in helping our families.
I wish you could have seen the faces of the students when they received their summer books. The joy and surprise from even
our older boys would have brought a tear to your eyes. It means a lot to them that someone cares about them and is doing some-
thing to make them feel so special. One of my female students hugged the books to her chest and with bright, shiny eyes and a
huge grin said, “Oh, goody. Please thank them so much for making my summer!”
Thank all of you for making the year easier and less stressful for our families. It is a joy to meet and talk with the delivery vol-
unteers. I hope you all understand what a difference you are making in these students’ lives.
I hope you have a restful and fun summer. I look forward to seeing you in the fall.
Gratefully,
Sherry Ingram
Hesse K-8 School Counselor
At our annual board meeting we thanked our outgoing board members, Gale Hirsh, Linda Meyers,
Paul Todtfeld, and our Recording Secretary Bunny Cohen. We thank them for their devoted service
over the years. We renewed the term of Jesse Ruben and welcomed new board members, Debbie
Luskey and Liz Arkin. May they lead us with strength and wisdom as we grow our synagogue.
