Avaz works on the principle of converting muscle movements into speech. Users

with good hand control can use Avazs touch screen to select what they want to say.

Other users can use Avaz with scanning. In this mode, Avaz shows various options on

screen, and presents a highlight that moves between them. When the highlight reaches

the option that the user wishes to choose, the user makes a large muscle movementfor

example, by touching anywhere on the screenwhich selects the highlighted option.

When a full sentence has been constructed, Avaz converts the message into speech.

Scanning in Avaz is made faster using grouping, ordering, and prediction. The options

are arranged to mimic keyboards and alphabet charts, so it is quicker to navigate. Avaz also

uses artificial intelligence to automatically predict words based on what the user is

trying to type. A user using Avaz in text mode can make a sentence fast enough for a

    real conversation!

In order to cater to a wider spectrum of disabilities, Avaz is also available in picture

modewith support for Indian languages. The picture mode is totally configurable,

so that Avaz can say anything that the user wantsno limits!

How Avaz worksPeople with neural motor condi-

tions are intelligent and aware of

the world around them, but have

    poor muscle control. This often

    includes muscles that make speech.

Avaz is a portable device which

constructs messagesfrom coarsemuscle movements. These messages

    are then converted into speech.

Avaz is thus an artificial voice for

    such people.

    Avaz Text

    (English)

    This variant of Avaz

    is useful for people

    who have high litera-

    cy and cognition, and

    who have started

    using the English lan-

    guage for their com-munication needs.

This is the most flexible form of Avaz, and the users can say anything they desire.

Avaz Text has a number of features for use in classrooms and social environments: it

has provision for storing and inserting pre-determined templates; it has a paragraph

mode for editing, saving and loading large blocks of text; and its dictionary (of more

than 10,000 words) can be modified with a spell mode.

    Avaz Images

    (all languages)

    This variant of Avaz is

    useful for younger us-

    ers or people with

lower cognition, or forusers who do not use

    English. This version of

    Avaz is the easiest to

    use, with the user nav-

igating through a pictorial set of words and sentences representing different objects

and actions. A PC-based editing software allows the options to be totally customized

for any language. The use ofrecorded voices increases naturalness as well as a senseof identity. Avaz Images uses Symbolstix images, used by leading AAC devices around

    the world.
