It’s all about availability.Where does your business need to be? Each company’s power andavailability requirements are unique and are based on company goalsand their evolution. Availability can be expressed in percentage ofuptime (see figure 1).
What’s your downtime costing you?Even a short amount of downtime means substantial losses for yourbusinesses. Costs vary by industry, but uptime is even more essentialto the Service Provider industry. Every hour of downtime can cost a service provider company tens of thousands of dollars (see figure 2).
When you look at the bottom line downtime numbers, the cost of power protection is a bargain. Even at a minimum estimatedcost/hour of downtime, 99.5% availability would cost your businessnearly $4 million dollars:
Level of Availability Uptime Downtime per year
Commercial 99.5% 43 hours 8 minutes
High Availability 99.9% 8 hours, 8 minutes
Fault Resilient Clusters 99.99% 53 minutes
Fault Tolerant 99.999% 5 minutes
Continuous 100% 0
Industry Business Avg. Cost/hourOperation of downtime
Financial Brokerage operations $8.45 million
Financial Credit Card/Sales $2.6 million
Media Pay per view $150,000
Retail Home Shopping (TV) $113,000
Transport Airline Reservations $89,500

DistributedFor smaller and growing customers with tightcapital constraints that prohibit investing inunused power infrastructure, a distributed solution uses smaller individual products (i.e.,APC Smart-UPS) to protect a single rack ofequipment. As the number of racks grows, thenumber of UPSs grows in direct proportion tothe business, step by step.
CentralizedA traditional approach for the large, stablebusiness that doesn’t expect the load to change dramatically over time. Choose a UPS with enough headroom to accommodatethe expected load. The Silcon family offers apower factor corrected design with the abilityto build in N+1 redundancy to your networkpower infrastructure. Whether your power loadrequirement is 10KV or greater than 500 KW,APC Silcon UPS systems offer scalability andredundancy for your business needs.
ZoneThe Zone-based power availability solutionworks well for an active, fast-growing businesswhose needs will change rapidly. Able topower multiple racks of network equipment,APC’s scalable Symmetra Power Array can protect a "zone." The modular design allows the user to configure a single chassis from 4kVA up to a fully loaded 16kVA. The systempower grows with the business, using capitalmore efficiently.
