One morning Lindi found an elephantin her room

ldquoLookrdquo she called ldquoTherersquos anelephant in my roomrdquo

ldquoNo there isnrsquotrdquo her mother calledback ldquoElephants donrsquot live in housesEverybody knows thatrdquo

The elephant yawned

At breakfast Lindirsquos dad asked her topass the milk

ldquoI canrsquotrdquo said Lindi ldquoThe elephantdrank it allrdquo

ldquoThere isnrsquot an elephantrdquo said her dadldquoElephants donrsquot live in the cityEverybody knows thatrdquo

The elephant burped

At school the teacher grumbledldquoWhatrsquos wrong with this chalkboardItrsquos all wrinklyrdquo

ldquoThatrsquos not the chalkboard Thatrsquos myelephantrdquo said Lindi

ldquoThere are no elephants at schoolrdquo saidthe teacher ldquoEverybody knows thatrdquo

The elephant ate the teacherrsquossandwiches

At break-time the elephant followedLindi to the playgroundHe knocked over the swings by mistake

ldquoGo awayrdquo said Lindi ldquoYoursquore not realand you shouldnrsquot be here Everybodyknows thatrdquo

The elephant drooped He walked awaywiping his eyes with his trunk

After school Lindi couldnrsquot see the elephant anywhere

ldquoElephantrdquo she called ldquoWhere are yourdquo

Lindi went home withouthim

She felt lonely

So she went outside andsat on the steps andwaited

And waited And waited

And then hellip

She saw a trunk

And tusks

And ears

The elephant was comingdown the road

She ran up and hugged him

ldquoIrsquom sorryrdquo she said

ldquoI didnrsquot mean itI know yoursquore real Yoursquore my elephantrdquo

The elephant lifted herup and put her on hisback and she rode downthe street

She waved to herneighbours

ldquoHello Mr Green HelloMrs Greenrdquo

ldquoLook at Lindirdquo said MrGreen ldquoHow did she getup there Maybe shegrewrdquo

ldquoDonrsquot be sillyrdquo said MrsGreen ldquoLittle girls donrsquotgrow that highEverybody knows thatrdquo

The elephant took Lindi to the lake andshe slid down his trunk like it was aslide

ldquoWheeeeerdquo she shrieked

They played all afternoon laughing andsplashing and spraying each other withwater

That night the elephanttucked her into bed

ldquoGood night Elephantrdquosaid Lindi ldquoThank you for a lovelydayrdquo

He patted her head andcurled up to sleepoutside her window

ldquoElephants are the best friends in the worldrdquo Lindi said to herself

ldquoNobody knows that except for me and my elephantrdquo
