Hart A Prince George Free Press Publication AUGUST 2012 Community News Welcome to the first edition of the Hart Community News. Inside these pages you will find stories about the people and the events that happen north of the Nechako River, and you will find advertising from the merchants that are here in the Hart. Are there enough stories in the Hart for this type of publication? We at the Prince George Free Press think so. That’s why we’re producing a special newspaper just for the Hart. We are starting out slow, only producing one issue a month, and our goal was to produce four pages for the first issue. Now that we are on the street we are going to need your help to fill the pages of the Hart Community News. Send us your stories, your photos, your ideas, your news tips ... whatever is of interest in the Hart. It could be a community event, someone who has done something special, or just a photo of something happen- ing. Or it could be a story about a business that has been around forever, like the Nukko Lake Store. On the other hand it could be about a new business in the area, like Lakeside Fitness Studio that Stacey Birkhiem has started out at her place in Ness Lake. It could be something as earth-shattering as why don’t we have a Starbucks in the Hart? Interesting people always make good stories as well. That’s what we are looking for. We would like this pub- lication to be the heart of the Hart. Send your ideas, or just send some feedback. We’d love to hear from you. Ever thought about going to the gym to get into shape, but decided against it because you were intimidated at even the idea?
That is exactly why Stacey Birkhiem started Lakeside Fitness Studio at her house on Ness Lake.
“I wanted someplace where people could come and be comfortable while they get into shape,” said Birkhiem, who is a personal fitness trainer and a self-confessed jock.
What got her started on the idea of a studio is that “back in high school, sports was a major part of my life, but after I got married, and had kids, I just didn’t have any time for myself anymore.”
So she started the fitness studio last May, to provide a place where people could come and get fit without the intimidation factor of a gym, and where everybody could support everybody’s progress.
“It’s really great to see somebody that thought they couldn’t do any exercise, and they get started, and then you see
the smiles on their faces as they do what they thought they couldn’t,” said Birkhiem.
Currently Birkhiem is offering Gentle Yoga, Booty Beat, Belly Fit, Beginner Bootcamp, and private Family Boot-camps.
“Don’t be intimidated by the term Bootcamp,” she said, “because it is for any age and level of fitness, and you won’t find any drill instructors out there yelling at you. All of the exercises can be modified for any level of fitness.”
Her fall fitness classes will be held at the Ness Lake Hall.
“We have had a few issues with people thinking we are too far out, but depend-ing on how you drive we are only 10-15 minutes from just about anywhere in the Hart. So that’s no farther than driving to any place downtown,” she said.
Classes start on September 3 and will be at the Ness Lake Hall from 7:30 to 8 p.m. There is also a Gentle Yoga Class on Saturday mornings that is held at their studio on the lake.
