The Bulgarian Team on arrival at Sam Ratulangi Airport

Bulgaria first to qualify with a round to spareAlthough they managed “only” 65 V.P. over yesterday’s five matches, Bulgaria won the qualification stages easily enough with a full match to spare, well ahead of India, Pertamina Blue and SaruntaWaya. Qualification Round 4Bulgaria v. SaruntaWaya

For round 4, I had an easy choice where to watch. Table 1 offered excellent prospects of an interesting match,

as both contestants had made a very good start, scoring about 49 and 44 V.P. from their first three matches. It took a while, however, before they got into gear, or, to be more specific, before Bulgaria got into full gear, as there was almost nothing in the first half of the set.A slight difference in defensive accuracy led to a big swing on board 6:

Board: 6. Dlr: East/EW [ A J 9 6 2 ] Q 9 8 5 { A J 4 } 5[ 5 [ K Q 8 7 4] K J 6 4 3 2 ] A 7{ K 3 2 { 8 7 5} Q 9 7 } A 10 4 [ 10 3 ] 10 { Q 10 9 6 } K J 8 6 3 2

In the Open Room, Danailov made the wrong bid at the right moment:

Open RoomWest North East SouthKorompis Stamatov Wohon Danailov

Three Clubs should have gone down one, even on Danailov’s correct play of a low trump from dummy to his king after winning the spade lead. East wins the second round of trumps with his ten, cashes the ]A and plays on spades, enabling West to score a trick with his }Q. The inescapable }A then means down one. When East continued another heart (partner contributing the three under the ace), the chance to set the contract was gone. Bulgaria +110 instead of -50.In the other room, things got even worse for SaruntaWaya:

North led his singleton club which declarer ducked to South’s king and a diamond came back, to be exact the {9 (3rd-5th one assumes). Declarer went up with the king, which had a disastrous effect on the defence as they never again touched the suit. North won his ace and returned a low trump to declarer’s jack. Another trump went to dummy’s ace and now, declarer led a club to his queen, North discarding the [9. The ]K was cashed and then came a low spade which North ducked. From here, there was no way back for the defenders who had managed to restrict themselves to three diamonds (after all), a club and a heart. Bulgaria another +110 instead of - 200, so a swing of 6 IMPs to them instead of 6 IMPs to the opposition. On the next board, Bulgaria struck again:Board: 7. Spades were never mentioned but 5} was a good contract. There would be no problem at all if the spade finesse would work and there were outside chances, as became clear at trick 1.West led the {A and continued the suit, which gave away the contract as East could not be reached any more to push a spade through. Dummy’s spades thus would go on the top hearts and Bulgaria had scored another fine +600 by playing 5} from the correct side of the table. Only an initial diamond underlead would have beaten it.

Well, 4[ is a decent enough contract but not when the [K is wrong and the defence can obtain a club ruff. {K lead, overtaken and a low club (!) back by Mihov for an immediate ruff led to a quick down one as declarer had no way to avoid losing two more black-suit tricks. Another +100 to Bulgaria, 12 IMPs more. Two boards later, OctaWohon tried a trick that did not really work:

South led a spade to the jack and king and now, Wohon thought he had a problem. He did not want to put his money on the correct view (if at all possible) in diamonds immediately and thus led a heart from hand. Danailov won his king, cashed the ]A and then, after a long pause, exited with the }J. The winning play now would have been to cash all four clubs and advance dummy’s {Q but when Wohon led a diamond from hand instead, North could win his king and cash three more heart tricks for down two. Bulgaria +200.

A standard puppet auction quickly saw the Bulgarians in 3NT as well. South also led a spade but Stefanov won and immediately led a diamond to dummy’s eight. Curtains.Bulgaria +630 for another 13 IMPs to them, to win the match 35-0 or 18.58 – 1.42 V.P. At this point, they were averaging about 18 V.P. a match. Who would stop them from an early qualification?

Qualification Round 6Pertamina Blue v. Great Britain(GB)

On Friday morning, the two teams first to appear on BBO were GB, ranked 3rd overnight, against

Pertamina Blue, ranked 8th . For the latter team, one of Indonesia’s leading women pairs, Lusje Bojoh and JoiceTueje, would face the Hackett twins, whereas Noldy and Vicky would have to take on Father Hackett and David Mossop. Right on the first board, the twins missed a thin game, non-vulnerable:

Board: 21. Dlr: North/NS [ 9 6 ] A 7 6 3 { A Q 9 5 4 } Q 10[ K J 4 [ A Q 5 3 2] 10 8 ] K Q 9{ K 10 7 3 { J 8} A J 7 4 } 5 3 2 [ 10 8 7 ] J 5 4 2 { 6 2 } K 9 8 6

The twins did very well in avoiding the hopeless spade game but did not bother to explore the chances of a NT game. Played by West, with the opening hand on lead, nine tricks would have been easy enough, even on a heart lead. East as declarer can counter a club lead by South by rising with the ace, thus blocking the suit. One overtrick, GB +140.

1{ 1[ Pass2} Pass 2] Pass3NT All Pass

In the Closed Room, we saw a less scientific but much more effective Indonesian auction. On a diamond lead, declarer had time enough to lead hearts twice from his hand. When North took his ]A and returned the }Q which declarer allowed to hold the trick, a club continuation even brought in an overtrick. Pertamina Blue +430 and 7 IMPs. Two boards later, both sides could have scored heavily:Board: 23. Once again in competitive situations like this, South’s 5{-bid was more an invitation to the opponents to bid on than an effort to reach a makeable contract…. Jason would have needed some very inspired guesses to bring home this contract on a diamond lead: he would have had to ruff, cash the }K and run the }J successfully, followed by drawing the trumps in three rounds, finess-ing the queen through North. When he started off with the more normal line of establishing the clubs in three rounds with a ruff in hand, followed by two top trumps, he could not discard enough losers on the established clubs to get the 11 tricks required. One down, +200 to Pertamina Blue.

In the other room, against a less invitational auction, Mossop also bid 5{ but his opponents, too, thought 5] would be a good idea. Nobody doubled so no great harm had been done…The play started the same way an in the Open Room but after establishing the clubs with a ruff declarer ruffed his last diamond first, before cashing his ]AK. As North could immediately ruff a club winner now, declarer had to lose three spade tricks in the end for down two and a push.

But what if any NS player had found a double on 5{?The score had gone up to 10-3 to Pertamina Blue after 7 boards so very little did in fact happen before the final boards came up. This was #28:

The Indonesian women lived up to their reputation by reaching the par contract on a combined 23 count. Even three rounds of trumps by the defence could not wreck this contract as the spade loser will go on the 13th club. Pertamina Blue +140.In the Closed Room, Mossop had a different view:

1NT showed South’s 15-count on which Paul Hackett, looking at quite a number of good intermediates, ventured a raise to the vulnerable game. When Noldy led from his longest and strongest, the contract had to go three down as the defenders had four spades and three

red top tricks for the taking. Pertamina Blue another +300 and 10 IMPs out of the Blue to them.

The British struck back immediately: Board: 29. Dlr: North/All [ A J 5 ] Q J 10 8 3 { J 8 2 } 9 2[ Q 8 6 3 [ 2] 9 7 6 5 2 ] K 4{ 10 7 { A Q 9 6} 10 3 } K Q J 8 6 5 [ K 10 9 7 4 ] A { K 5 4 3 } A 7 4

Again, a very disciplined auction by the Indonesian women but this time, the combined hands fitted much better and the layout certainly favoured declarer even though the trumps were 4-1. In the play of the hand, Joice showed that the trump break was not a big problem. She immediately won the opening lead of the }10, unblocked the ]A and ran the [10 successfully. Spade to the jack, ]Q ruffed in hand, felling the king, spade to the ace and two top hearts on which she discarded two losing clubs. A diamond from dummy was taken by East’s king but declarer’s [K and {K were her 9th and 10th trick, as West had to ruff East’s diamond winner in the end. Nicely done. Pertamina Blue +170.

Qualification Round 7Great Britain (GB) v. Norway

For Round 7, I watched the match between the nos. 4 (GB) and 8 (Norway) in the current standings.

On paper, this might have looked an interesting match that could go either way but it quickly became clear that the Norwegians were having slightly the better of most of the opening deals of the match. On board 2, the twins slightly overbid to a virtually no-play game for a 6-IMP loss and this was board 3:

The twins play a very light opening style so Justin preferred an invitational 2NT when 2} came round to him. After partner’s opening bid, it was almost impossible for them to find their diamond fit. When East led the ]K, the contract had no play any more. Declarer won the third round of hearts and cleared the diamonds but the defence still was entitled to two more hearts and the two black aces. Down two, Norway +100.

In the Closed Room, the checkback 2} meant that NS here, too, could not easily end up in their best fit as South had to launch an invitational 2[ over the mandatory 2{ response. When trumps broke quite pleasantly for declarer, he had a simple overtrick, losing just a diamond, the two black aces and a club ruff when West led the }9, ducked by East when dummy inserted the jack. So another +140 and another 6 IMPs to Norway. The score stood at 18-5 to Norway when the Britons finally got a chance to score heavily:

In the Closed Room, West’s natural weak two made it difficult for North to show his strong two-suiter. South, who was looking at a lot of black cards, saw no reason for action over 4{ so there it rested. The contract was not a great success as it went down three for +300 to Norway but it might well be a profitable “sacrifice” against an adverse game or even slam.

After the ambiguous 2} rebid, it remained unclear

to South whether there was a real fit or not. North’s

forward-going 2NT did not reveal very much to South

who thus could do little else than settle for 3}.

East led the }10 to the jack, queen and king. From here,

declarer crossruffed his way to 12 tricks.

GB +170 only, though even the slam was cold, and a

great chance of recouping some IMPs thus missed, as the

deal brought Norway 4 more IMPs now.

In the Thailand v. Djarum Jakarta match, the Indonesians

found a way to even reach the slam:

In the Closed Room, the Norwegians (or maybe, Kiwi’s…) reached the proper contract of Four Hearts. When the defence led a diamond to the ace and continued the suit, declarer won, cashed two top trumps and, seeing the break, correctly went on to take spade finesse. When this worked, he crossed to dummy with the }A to repeat the spade finesse. When next the [K dropped under the ace, declarer could draw the last two trumps and cash the last spade and the }K, making two overtricks when the }Q made a welcome appearance. Norway +680.This should have been a deal without history but the twins had other ideas:

2{ included a 19-21 NT hand and 3} was an immediate

3[, Justin simply checked the keycards and announced

the slam.

With all the finesses working, this slam looks an easy

make but look at what happened when West led the }2

to the queen and ace. Like his Norwegian counterpart,

Jason cashed two top trumps and took a spade finesse,

but when this held, he decided to draw all the remaining

trumps first before successfully repeating the spade

finesse.

At this point, he had a serious problem for which he

took ample time to consider his chances. After checking

the opponents’ convention card, he found out that EW

lead low from three but this did not help him very much

as the }2 lead was ominously looking like a singleton,

in which case it would be necessary to immediately run

the }9 through East, leaving the [A as a vital entry in

dummy. So he eventually took the finesse…and was

one down for another 13-IMP loss to GB rather than a

much-needed 13-IMP gain.

The final score in the match thus became 41-5 to

Norway or 18.71 – 1.29 V.P.

Qualification Round 8Bulgaria v. PON Sulut (North Sulawesi)

At lunch on Friday, Bulgaria, of course, were still leading the field after their tremendous 91 V.P. score

(from max. 100) on Thursday. Their opponents for Round 8 would be the Provincial Champion team of North Sulawesi (Sulut), or, shorter, the local champions. This team will represent Sulut in the national championships for all provinces and all sports, in about a year’s time in Bandung, the capital of West Java province. This match was full of spectacular deals so you can expect a long report this time. The fun started on the first board:

Probably, a club game is the best spot for NS but 4] had some chances, too. West led a diamond to East’s ace and a club came back. Declarer won the ace and successfully led a heart to dummy’s ten. When he next tried a spade to his king, wanting to get back to hand for another heart lead, West won the ace and continued the suit so declarer had to ruff. The last diamond was ruffed next but after cashing the ]K declarer was stranded in dummy and eventually went down four as the ]A was his only other trick. Bulgaria another +200 and 12 IMPs to open their account. On the next board, the Bulgarian aggression led to an equally spectacular auction but this time, their shot was not quite on target:
